Hello...simple enough really...
What do you think is the best song you've written?
Maybe add a link...
A chance to catch up on some stuff we might have missed...
Is that ok with The Moderators?
Any takers?
-
The first song I ever posted here "I Learned To Walk". It's been downhill ever since (for songwriting, not walking. The walking has mostly been uphill!).

Nice one, Derek...that WAS a tough one to follow...cheers!
-
Cool song Del,but the one that followed on from that on your YouTube slot, was a belter too. (Drag you back) Lots of classy stuff there man.
I think it's very difficult for a writer to state a choice for 'best song',maybe we are all too close to our own stuff to get proper perspective. That's where this forum helps.
Interesting thread Paul,I'll need to have a think....
-
Wow ! This is very subjective. I could tell you the song that other people said they liked the best, I could tell you which song received the best reviews on the forum but what I think is the best song, no, worst maybe yes :)
-
Of course, I'm totally not objective, so who knows? But I think I like my "The Mark of the Chains" (https://soundcloud.com/caliamoko/the-mark-of-the-chains) best. My husband, though, thinks "Everybody Wants You, Baby" (https://soundcloud.com/caliamoko/candles-light-the-way/s-oPtwD) is my biggest hit. :) That's the one I wrote for the Valentine competition last winter, but you probably haven't heard the most recent version (at the link above), which I just had produced by Boydie.
-
Both great songs, Vicki. Great to hear them again. I think your husband is right - that's a classic :-)
-
Whenever this songs comes up on my shuffle, I think to myself, "Damn! I wish I wrote that song!"
And then I remember... I DID!!! And it makes me happy.

I can see why. It's lovely. :)
And thanks, delb0y, for the complimentary words. So nice to read. :D

Great song, Pop. That one passed me by if you've ever posted it before. But it's super :)
-

"Everybody Wants You Baby" reminds me a lot of something like Kirsty MacColl would have written in the 80s. And that is a very good thing. I am a sucker for a great Kirsty tune. Love this one!
And on "Mark of the Chains" your voice has a definite Dagmar Krause thing happening, which I like quite a bit. And it's a very good song, as well. But, I do have to go with your husband on this one.
But they are both great tunes!
-
And thank you both, Dellboy and Calia for your kind words about my tune.

Great tune! I can see why you like it so much. I like it too.
-
Hey,I like that Pop. I don't believe I've heard much from yourself,I never see you in 'finished songs',maybe I've just missed your stuff. Sorry if I did, because it's lovely. :)
-
Great stuff, Todd and Vicki...they're top tunes too :)
i'm enjoying this thread...keep them coming, folks!
-
I'd have to go with "Rescued by the Rain" https://soundcloud.com/lutehill/rescued-by-the-rain-17122015-remix
Was kind of in my early days of recording, but everything just fell into place with it from idea, writing to production. Shed a tear in the studio. Got a terrible review from the holistic songwriting guy.
-
Hello...simple enough really...
What do you think is the best song you've written?
Haven't finished it yet. I'll let you know in a couple of weeks. ;)
-
Hey Adam. I loved Rescued by The Rain. The Holistic guy said Polystyrene Smile sounded like Simon & Garfunkel. Methinks not :)
-
WTF is 'the holistic guy'? :D
-
There was some guy on here who had a site called Holistic Songwriting and he offered a free review which he filmed. Check it out on Google
-
yeah - that WAS a great one, Adam
and yes, Guy - that WILL be a great one
that was Friedemann...he used to do a "feedback friday" video podcast thing where he'd review our songs
he seemed to think one of mine was a bit rubbish...funnily enough...it was my own favourite...the tongue-in-cheek "love song with a twist" Adolf & Eva number "honeymoon at home"
https://soundcloud.com/thefuneralcrasher/honeymoon-at-home
-
Honeymoon at Home is great Paul. Think Freidmann was coming from a very commercially orientated angle :)
-
This one has had the most plays for me and I guess it holds a special place in my heart too (depressing as it may be... :'( )
https://soundcloud.com/paulcanuck/rest-in-peace
-
wow! that's great, Paul :)
never heard that one before...
what a great thread :P
-
PaulAds....yes that was a good one but I think I prefer your latest. Your star is still on the rise. Mind you 'Not Without A Fight' is one that always sticks in my head.
Del, I have to say that I didn't listen again to your whole collection but Skub reminded me of 'Drag You back' which is a great song - great sound too, was the version I heard before a rough demo...can't remember now.
Vicki, I go with 'The Mark of the Chains' too. Good song. Your husband is wrong.
Adam, I agree with your choice. There was something special with that one.
Pop, that's a nice song indeed. No wonder you're pleased with it. You did a fine job to maintain the interest in what is a fairly long number.
Paulski, it was a good, well-written song...not my fave of yours, but nicely done.
My personal fave is Under Your Spell because I think I had some good ideas for that one.
-
Hey hey,
Cool thread Paul.
Delboy, I can see why you hold that song in esteem, very nice indeed and lovely simple-sounding guitar work.
I've been an avid listener of "Mark of the Chain's" Vicki, is certainly one to be proud of.
Very accomplished song there aswell Pop, and must be a great feeling aha! I'm yet to hear one of my tunes in context with others (playlists, shuffle) as I keep them away to avoid the inevitable cringe!
I'd like to say my best is my latest, to keep with "each should be better than the last" but I'll have to keep in theme with Derek and go for the first one I posted on this forum (though it was in WIP, and I've re-recorded since from suggestions).
I still feel like this one goes unrivaled in 'catchyness' and melody potential (in my portfolio) and is also the one which gave me the confidence to start sharing my music (regrettably to some I'm sure ;)). Some of my others may have not happened without this one giving me that confidence, or if they did would undoubtedly not be as good.
https://soundcloud.com/namelessmc/cant-be-real-1
(edit) but it's actually the first song on my 'open mic' entry, which is a much better go at it imo
Still needs re-revisiting to perhaps slow down and improve the production quality, when the time's right xD
Cheers,
Scott.
EDIT: Didn't realize there was 2 pages to this thread, more gems to ponder at! :)
-
This is the first song I ever posted on here and my first proper attempt at songwriting so it has a special place
Hole In My World
https://soundcloud.com/boydiemusic/hole-in-my-world?in=boydiemusic/sets/boydie-original-songs
This song has had the most plays on SoundCloud - I would like to re-record it as I think I could do a much better job now, both vocally and with the production
Edge Of Never
https://soundcloud.com/boydiemusic/edge-of-never?in=boydiemusic/sets/boydie-original-songs
My favourite song though is this one, which was the first one where I attempted some "pop" production
Watching Me, Watching You
https://soundcloud.com/boydiemusic/watching-me-watching-you?in=boydiemusic/sets/boydie-original-songs
My best song though is always "the next one"...
-
Ok. After much pondering I'm going to nominate this one simply as it got me back into songwriting after nearly 30 years so it's kind of special to me. Would maybe have produced it differently but hey, that was then and this is now
https://m.soundcloud.com/pompeyjazz/fu-war
-
I definitely have not written yet! I'll try to think of a sensible answer, but I listen back to some of my older stuff and there's almost always something I'm not happy with!
-
yeah - that WAS a great one, Adam

https://soundcloud.com/thefuneralcrasher/honeymoon-at-home
That one was absolute Genuis - Not for the faint hearted - But The twist was Mega - Loved It My Favourite.
-
Wow there are some great ones here, some I knew some I didn't:
Edge of Never: Boydie outdoes Robbie
FU War: Pompeyjazz before he was famous
Honeymoon at Home: pushing the boundaries - though I also have a thing for Don't Give Up the Fight (ft. PaulAds vocal, not the other one)
Rest in Peace: try listening with a dry eye. I am now giving up songwriting.
I learned to walk: Delboy explodes onto the forum and we all look at our fingers
Mark of the Chains: I also like that one better by far
Made it to the Middle: I did not see that coming! "keep the windows open"!
Can't be Real: a true original, the rhymes keep coming...
And all the rest...! Some awesome things happening round here. Thanks Paul for the reminder.
-
Cheers, Adam...yeah...I've re-recorded the vocals on them all and replaced the soundcloud files 😀
Had a great lunch hour listening to Johns FUwar and Boydies three as well...great stuff!
-
this is a little bit different... its the whole package here that im proud of...so I hope that counts :)
Ally & I met walking our children to school & back each day ..we were both bored stiff being mums at home & decided to form a virtual band ..our interest was mainly making these videos..
i started writing & recording songs again & together we wrote & filmed the videos using a green screen
but we just could not find anyone else to play bass so I wore a succession of wigs & played two people while Ally mimed to my vocals as she decided she didnt like her voice after all..
it was the most incredible fun dreaming up the scripts ,filming ourselves dressing up ,using puppets ,& animation & making music again.. it was wonderful & we made about 10 songs with videos
unfortunately she moved away & its a long story but the videos were all taken down..
but you can have a peek at this one! .. I would be lying if I didnt admit I realy love what we managed here
we used to rope my son Adam in when we filmed with drums
anyway years later I still have mouths to feed (after work now tho) so I will listen to your songs tonight :)
-
the best song wot I think I rote is still unrecorded :( or rather it's been recorded several times but I just cannot get it to sound how it sounds in my head..so every now and again I have another go, as I've improved in arrangement/production I get a bit closer..but not happy enough to finish it...maybe soon..maybe this year ::) ::)
best, Kevin :)
-
Blimey - There are some absolutely classic hidden gems on here :)
-
Ive deleted most of my songs on Soundcloud as the quality of Recording was terrible and am going to re- record the vocals soon....but this was my first serious go at something -its a bit long (i'll call it the 12 inch version) and it can still be found in a corner of You Tube Here:
-
Nice one, MFJ...great song :)
I'd like to hear the others when you get them done...

That's brilliant, Tina...do you have the other videos somewhere?
-
Wow ! Tina and Morefrog. Great songs and videos as well. This is a really enlightening thread. Enjoying it big time
-
Lordy, how do you choose this? Ok, instead of choosing what I think may be my best song, I´ll go for my favourite of mine simply because it was soooooo much fun to do, but it´s been posted on the forum before:
https://soundcloud.com/martynrich/find-your-killer
There are some fab songs in this thread. Really enjoying the listen tonight!
-
Agree all around guys. That's a fab song Martyn. I've just listened to forum songs all evening on and off. Such talent and diversity. Keep it up all you fab groovesters (Is that a real word ?)
-
well ive had a listen to about half the songs here & there are some gems ive not heard before (Paul i never expected to hear you sound like Prefab Sprout! & Dereks one was a real delight) but also some where i thought thats not quite my favourite by that person but i guess we all use different criteria how we each judge our own best
-
Listening to some of these great songs -
Derek - I can see why you put this one up - great life story song and finger picking good :)
Adam - love that one - quirky as all get out :)
PaulAds - what a voice - what an ending! ;D
Good idea for a thread - and thx guys for the kind remarks on RIP :)
Paul
-
I once attempted to pin down what my "favorite song" was. Turned out I have about 120 "favorite songs".
It would be even less possible to pin down my "own favorite" from the songs I've written.
If I have a "best song" or a "favorite song" it would be one of the many songs that I've written good lyrics and poor music for. There are many of those. . . and I'm convinced that the right music would make one of them my "very best."
Beyond that, I have no idea.
-
A rough guess and a link would be great, Verlon :)
-
The best song I wrote is called Fresh Lemonade. I don't have a great deal of talent in singing or playing to bring it to life but lyrically this is my proudest accomplishment.
Fresh lemonade
First time I saw you
In half a decade
First thing we do
Drink fresh lemonade
Out on the porch where old memories don't fade
Looking out onto the field
Where we once played
It got older but it's the same
We got older but we're the same
All that's changed is you dropped your nickname
We're just the same
We're just the same
Just the same
Forgive me for walking away
I didn’t know who I was
Until today
The hardest things I had to say
Were said over fresh lemonade
And I owe you an apology
For all the times I pushed you away from me
To me you always stayed true
And I’m so sorry for leaving you
I’m sorry
But I
I am loyal to you
And for everything that we’ve been through
The highs and lows
The ups and downs
I’ve got one thing that I know you want
A glass
A glass of fresh lemonade
I don’t wanna lose you again
I’m sorry for what I said to you my friend
I was in a dark place
I couldn’t see your light
But for the first time in my life it finally feels right
We’re sat back at the porch and drinking fresh lemonade
You showed me that even when times are hard
Even when I am mad
Even when the lemons life gave are bad
You can make fresh lemonade
-
My best song though is always "the next one"...
Oddly enough this is my exact sentiment. Granted I'm primarily a lyricist, rather than a songwriter, so that might explain why I subscribe to this philosophy - though I have had some great co-writes that I think were pretty good.
I'm starting to finese my toplining and playing about with bass lines etc in Mixcraft so I'm getting a little better with the consequence that lyrics are becoming more than words on a page as I can give co-writers a bit of an indication of what is in my head as a 'song'. Prior to this I had the exact problem someone else mentioned about nothing ever sounding like it does in your head....
-
These two songs where written years back and like a few more of my songs these two were written from that inner personal feelings, about five years back i started on this journey of recording and the first song i recorded with the help of Al Kelly was "Live Goes On" Al plays piano on this track, the second one is "Blue Skies Are Dark At Night"
My answer to your question Paul "The best song you've written" all of them and of course the next one as well.
Another great thread and really enjoying listening to great songs.

-
Damn, it's taken me ages to get through this thread! Really good to hear these songs though - some really good stuff here. Highlights for me were tina's cheeky lyric and del's universal themes, but it's obvious throughout that we have some very capable writers in our midst.
This definitely was my 'one to beat' for so long, and maybe it still is. Maybe it's just because it's a few years old now, or maybe it's because my new (unrecorded) stuff really is better, but since I haven't recorded those yet, I'm going to have to go with north of the woods https://soundcloud.com/anthony-lane/north-of-the-woods
-
Caught up with a few more of these before hitting the motorway. Wow. What a great thread.
Just listening to Paul's Rest in Peace. Glad I didn't come across this a month or two back, I'd have been in bits Tremendous song.
Adam's Rescued by the Rain was another new one to me - loved it. I need to delve back in to the archives here from before I joined. Missing a lot of classics.
And the other Paul's Honeymoon at Home was one I'd heard before but always a joy. Super production and, as I always say, Paul's work always takes me back to the days of my youth (in a very good way) with the vocal sound and the melodies and the style.
Brilliant stuff all round and a couple more pages still to go... :-)
-
Wouldn't it be cool to have an album of everyone's own favorites? This is probably my favorite thread on the forum. I would absolutely love to have a playlist of all these songs.

Well, mine is available for free download at my Bandcamp page if you really want it. Go for it. I would love for you to have it.
-
I don't know....maybe, "All By Myself"
;D
-
Very quirky song Adam,pretty special.
I hadn't heard those songs,Boydie. In fact I've heard very little of your stuff at all. ???
Hole in my World is aces,it has a Knockin on heaven's door?Tom Petty feel. Edge of never, almost Robert Smith vibe. Watching me,watching you is a fine pop choon. All three very different and finely turned out. 3 and 4 years ago...don't you have time now Paul?
FU War..I don't remember this one John,despite your prodigious output,I'm surprised I missed this. It's a monster.
Paulads, was that song really 10 months ago? :o Still sounds great man.
RIP is an ageless epic Paul,a hard trick to pull off.
I'm only halfway through the thread, great listening. 8)

I have a couple of songs which are particularly special to me. The first was written after walking away from songwriting for 20 years and was the first song I posted on here. I didn't know if I had anything left, but it turns out the taps are open again! :D
https://soundcloud.com/skub1955/rock-a-hard-place-boydie-master
The second was written about a local lad who died in WW1. It made some people cry and that made me happy, since it meant I connected. Martin said it made him cry because it is so bloody long!
Kudos go to Boydie too,for the final act of turd polishing. :)

So many amazing songs on this thread!
Great to hear Boydie's older tunes, classics from Paulski I don't think I'd heard. Tone's "north of the woods" is really lovely. Every lyrics I hear from PaulAds gets me right THERE!

Flog that horse Kev! Sounds enticing, would love to hear to near misses as well as that platonic ideal you are going for!
For mine, it's got to be this one:
https://soundcloud.com/t-j-boswell/the-ends-justify-the-means
Catchy as hell, and tries to sum the entire history of the world as a fight for love. I get excited every time I hear it still.
Awesome thread!
Tom.

I haven't written my best yet, either.
Of those those already written, this is one of my interchangeable bests.
If someone says it's my best I can't really argue with them,
i sometomes try but soon run out of steam.
Looking forward to listening to some of the site's talented artists when I've more time.

lyrics -
Whistles n' Bells
Wasting time, smoking cigarettes. Cigarettes
All is fine, she's got no regrets. No regrets
Everyone seems to be mad
Dressed to the nines, heart shaped lips, no-one to kiss
Whistles n bells, n' no more than this, more than this
Emptiness sells, blinking lights
Listen, I'm a natural, feel like an animal in a zoo
Next to impossible, almost too beautiful to be true
'til it happens to you
Lately, I've been eating brown leaves, morning star
He's all I need, watching over me, over me
Everyone seems to be mad
Wishin' I knew what the matter was, matter was
You cannot tell what knowing does, knowing does
Whistles n' bells, blinking lights
Maybe I'm an accident, passersby are standing around
One forgotten elephant the circus has long left town
And I'm still around
Listen to the fork-tongued or the sweet song mockingbird
All you want is your fun, come the dawn y'seem so absurd
Hey, have you not heard?
Everyone seems to be mad
Whistles n' bells, blinking lights. Blinking lights

It's a cracker for sure Tom,but 'Where did the Time go Emily' is my personal fav of yours.
-
Last night I listened to -
Boydie's "Hole In My World" - wonderful singer/songwriter stuff. Far more to my tastes than your pop offerings - though you obviously (audibly?) have a talent for both! ;D ;D
skub's "Thomas-Caldwell" - great song beginning to end. Heartfelt and poignant - love that (pan flute?) put a shiver down my old spine for sure. ;D ;D
cheers all for the comments on RIP ;D
Paul
-
More great stuff to enjoy...thanks folks!
I've just got to say...what a talent Tom Boswell is...

Thee speak true Paul. :)
-
Enjoying the hell out of this, there's so many songs and such great talent I would've missed if it wasn't for this brilliant thread.
If there'll ever be a one called "The best thread you ever started?", this will be the classic and epic one to beat! ;)
Personally I will refrain from posting my favorite song because I haven't been at it for that long*, I started recording my songs last year and I'm only up to 5 I think so far. Too early and too few hinder me from posting that one "classic" song I wrote. Give me a year and I'll come back. ;D ;D ;D
Cheers,
Peter
*If anyone's confused, I've been writing for the most part of my adult life and as some of you know also worked in the biz for some time, but that was songs for others to perform. It's only 6 years ago I started writing songs for myself that I wanted to perform, and only like a year ago I started recording them. Why it took me almost 30 years to do this is beyond my understanding but at least I'm here now.
Anyhoo, just to clarify.
-
A rough guess and a link would be great, Verlon :)
Hi Paul:
Sorry to take so long to reply. I've had the flu for awhile.
There is a link at the bottom of every post of mine that takes anyone who wishes to go there to my Reverbnation site. Anyone is completely welcome to go and have a listen.
As far as which songs are better than the others. . . I really don't have much help to give.
Might try "Picture a World", and/or "True Blue" and/or "An Unwilling Witness to All That remains" and/or "Heaven Won't Have Me". If you ask me tomorrow, I'd have a different list.
-
Excellent...thanks, Verlon...I'll definitely check those out :)
-
Thought I'd give this a bump...I'd love to hear some more :)
-
Hi Paul, the whole writing, recording playing etc thing is such a journey for me, that I would say when I wrote and recorded things in general the last thing I've done has always been my favourite. When I look back I can see the journey I've been on, and maybe I've still got lots to learn :o. But...... I actually think the last 3 guitar songs I've done are the best songs I've written. The river still flows, Torture me and , You don't want to know. I think they're the most mature, best structured and easy to access songs. For what it's worth!
Cheers
Jamie

The first song I ever posted here "I Learned To Walk". It's been downhill ever since (for songwriting, not walking. The walking has mostly been uphill!).

'I learned to walk' is a fantastic song!

best song is a toughie. best by decade might be easier, but still very difficult.
however, if i go way back, more than 30 years (wow) i have a tune that has always been very dear to my heart. i can still remember the day i wrote it quite clearly. i still lived at home with mom & dad and had a twin bed in my room. i was sitting on the end of the bed with my amp pointed right at my head, straight away. that's where i wrote the song. i wrote a number of tunes in that small bedroom.
anyway, keep in mind the year was 1985, and we were in the height of the cold war. me, being raised up in a Pentecostal church, had lived my entire life hearing about Armageddon, the rapture, the inevitable doom of humanity, etc... and at the time i believed there would be a nuclear holocaust, i would never marry, have a family, or a chance at a normal life.
fast forward a few years and my view on the hopelessness of mankind had changed a bit, but anyway, at the time, the emotions and fears were quite real to me.
so this song is about just that, the fear of nuclear holocaust. its titled Sleeping with A Giant.
i still to this day, play it, albeit, more mellow, slowly and on acoustic.
i'd categorize it as 80s power pop, and i think it still holds up.
keep in mind the year it was recorded was 1987 and i think we spent about $2000 on the recording project. that was a bunch of dough back then, but it only bought us 1 day in a studio with an engineer. we managed 6 songs that day.

I really like Painting By The Roadside - but that's just my most recent completed song and I tend to always think the one I'm writing is the best
I certainly hope that won't be the best song I'll ever write!

I don't have a a favourite but there are a number of songs that stand out for me. They often mark a significant event. This one was written for my Dad, a fisherman who I didn't see for more than twenty years before he died. I posted this several years ago and my good friend Andy Cruise (KAfla) sang the vocal. This version is the one that I first produced with my voice. It's such a personal song that I had to do a version that included my singing. . It's such a complicated lyric that it would take more than a little explanation. Suffice to say that every word has great significance and tells a story about the relationship that I had with my Dad, the scattering of his ashes at sea, the dreams that followed his death, and the love and anger that I carried for many, many years in his absence.
The song is called 'Still Remains'.

Wicked Deeds - really nice song, just great.
my father past away 5 years back now, and i had a few writes come out from that event.

best song is a toughie. best by decade might be easier, but still very difficult.
however, if i go way back, more than 30 years (wow) i have a tune that has always been very dear to my heart. i can still remember the day i wrote it quite clearly. i still lived at home with mom & dad and had a twin bed in my room. i was sitting on the end of the bed with my amp pointed right at my head, straight away. that's where i wrote the song. i wrote a number of tunes in that small bedroom.
anyway, keep in mind the year was 1985, and we were in the height of the cold war. me, being raised up in a Pentecostal church, had lived my entire life hearing about Armageddon, the rapture, the inevitable doom of humanity, etc... and at the time i believed there would be a nuclear holocaust, i would never marry, have a family, or a chance at a normal life.
fast forward a few years and my view on the hopelessness of mankind had changed a bit, but anyway, at the time, the emotions and fears were quite real to me.
so this song is about just that, the fear of nuclear holocaust. its titled Sleeping with A Giant.
i still to this day, play it, albeit, more mellow, slowly and on acoustic.
i'd categorize it as 80s power pop, and i think it still holds up.
keep in mind the year it was recorded was 1987 and i think we spent about $2000 on the recording project. that was a bunch of dough back then, but it only bought us 1 day in a studio with an engineer. we managed 6 songs that day.

This is a great song Mike. The 80's and nineties were th decades that from a musical ambition perspective, everything seemed possible. This track really stands up as a great example of that time. The acoustic drum kit makes for a great driving force here.
I remember the days of studio recordings. They cost a fortune and like you, my band mates and I crammed as many recordings into a session as was possible. Where does time go to? :-)

Cheeky bump...loads of new members who are producing great songs...
i'd love to see a few posting some of their finest here, please :)

This is probably mine, an instrumental for piano and guitar
Thanks John

This is the first song where I wrote all of the lyrics from an idea of my own, and its still one of my favourites, Andy at CAW came up with the music which we thought fitted it perfectly

I can only take credit for the lyrics on this one, the real work was done by a very talented guy called Matt Lyon who sadly seems to have disappeared from the forum. It was difficult for me to pick a favourite from all the collaborations I've done on this site but decided on this one simply because of the complexity of the music which was created without using a single instrument. Everything you hear was done through voice alone. Enjoy!

Some great songs here. Good advert for the forum ;D
My favourite song that I've written since joining the forum
is one I wrote for my kids when my Grandson was born.
Called 'Grandads Song'....imaginative huh ::)
The mix and production aint the best, keep meaning to
redo it.....but the kids love it, and it brings a tear to the
eye of my mother in law. Which is no mean feat, so it
can't be that bad ;D
