Title: Music solicitors
Post by: PaulSmith on July 07, 2016, 07:15:30 PM
Hi,

Am a newbie here and looking for some advice. Hoping someone can recommend a good music solicitor in the UK - one who acts for songwriters in finding the best publishing company (i.e. one who has a creative dept and is proactive in marketing) and who ensures you don't get screwed in any agreement with said publishers?

Can see there's one called Sheridans but does anybody have any experience in this area?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul

I think you mean agent? A solicitor is a lawyer, and I'm fairly sure they won't help you find business contacts.

What exactly are you after?

IMHO there is no need AT ALL for a solicitor to pitch to publishers - and they would not help you with this anyway

If you are looking for formal copyright protection and legal advice on contracts, agreements, publishing deals etc. then I think your best move would be to join the Guild Of International Songwriters & Composers (GISC): http://www.songwriters-guild.co.uk/

As a members you will get access to copyright protection, legal advice and a range of other benefits

However, the most important thing you need is commercially viable music

I would suggest hanging around this forum for a while and post some of your music for review by the excellent members here and review some songs
