So with all votes counted and verified and a very close finish I'm delighted to announce the results:
In 1st: Tboswell: Bittersweet Lady
In 2nd: Digger & Katya: Mono No Aware
In 3rd: Shadowfax (featuring Wim): Showing Me the Way
And an honorable mention for 4th: Delyb0y: Unknown Man #89
In a lovely twist (hoho), all the rest of us were tied in 5th place...
Thanks everyone for entering and voting it's been a great one! Congratulations to the winners, the runners up and really the entire forum for doing this in the way that no-one else can.
Cheers everyone. Looking forward to another one soon!
Hi All - after the recent debate, here we go - a new competition to get the creative juices going during the Winter Months...
"The Rules"
The theme is a happy love song, with as much of a twist as you would like.
A new song please!
Open to all current forum members no matter how many posts etc.
Entries to be submitted by 29th February 2016.
The ideal would be to have as many collaborations as possible, makes it more interesting. But no pressure and solo entries are fine. One colab and one solo for each member.
Please add your name to this thread if you're in. If you do want to team up with someone, say what you offer (e.g. lyrics, melody, instruments, vocals, music theory, production capability) and what you'd like from the colaborator. I/we will try to match you with someone if you can't easily find one.
Please put Lyrics, WIP and Finished songs into the relevant thread on the forum, as usual, not here. For voting we'll gather them all together here.
Update 01-03-2016 - here is the "final" list of entrants! (alphabetical by song title - please let me know asap if anyone missed, wrong versions, broken links etc.)
Vote will be for your top 3 in order of preference: please PM both "adamfarr" and "Viscount Cramer & His Orchestra" by end of day on UPDATE 16-03-2016 Wednesday!
Everyone on the list below must vote (hurrah!) but not for themselves (boo!). And everyone else who reads this should listen and vote too...
In my humble opinion voters should be looking mainly at concept, melody, lyrics and structure - this should be all about the songs.
I might put together a Soundcloud playlist but maybe not as that disadvantages those who aren't on that platform (happy to do in another place if any ideas). Otherwise just keep clicking below. You'll be pleased you did, as you will find the most varied and creative collection of styles and ideas.
Good luck and thanks to all entrants for making this competition such an inspiration and showing off the talent around this forum!

Well done for getting on top of this Adam. I'll co-organise with you if I qualify. Just tell me what to do!
I am working on a song which broadly fits the theme so I'll enter that if it's finished by then. This will be a solo-ish effort although i will be trying to get someone (female) to sing it for me.
I'll stick my neck out and say I'm up for a collab too if anybody wants to work with me. Either your lyric to my music or a joint overall song collab...whatever. Nobody wants me to sing on their song obviously but I can play a bit of harmonica and juggle 3 clementines though this might not be apparent on the finished recording.
Anyway i'm in solo definitely and I'll co-organise if you want so that you can enter.
-
VC - that's brilliant, also because you have been around here longer and so might able to help match people up if they need it. After that the main duty will probably be for receiving and counting the votes so I don't think it will be too onerous.
Of course that means our collaboration will have to wait for another time but I don't think I'm the vocalist you were after ;)
So I definitely accept, many thanks!
-
Nice one Adam. Count me in. I'm also up for colabs if that entails dodgy lyrics, tobacco enhanced vocals or dodgy guitar :)
-
Well, I was in until I read "happy..." - unless the twist part can be that it's not happy! :)
I just can't write happy songs no matter how much I try.
-
I'll try an entry. Happy is hard for me too but it's good to go outside of your comfort zone! I'm far too unreliable for colabs though
-
I know, I know, but I think it's kind of the point that the comp should force us to do something different from what we do the rest of the year!
Like NeilC perhaps we can look on it as if we've been commissioned to do a special piece...
Maybe finding some happy colaborators could be a solution? Possibly hard to find around this forum though ... ;)
-
Challenge accepted. Count me and Katja in.
-
Adam,
I'll be in for a collab and a personal entry.
Are you going to propose collaborations? I'll like to work with singer/lyricasts/musicians perhaps someone I've not worked with before.
:)
Neil
-
Neil - yes, I think if we get all the early requests in then we can try to match people up. I think I'd give it till Christmas and then see what we have.
-
By the way, I will go for a solo entry and would also like to collaborate with a proper keyboard/piano player and/or a female vocalist (seems to be a shortage of those at the mo).
Cheers
-
Thanks for taking this on Adam and Viscount :) I'm in for a solo entry :o
@ digger :) HAPPY is relative and so is twist, so I wouldn't fret too much about it :o
-
I want to get in on this. I would love a collab--have never done one. I can offer work on lyrics, melody, chord progressions, female vocals (high tenor, low alto range). Maybe some rhythm guitar and/or keyboard bass. I am not much good with production, though. So far.
I would love to collab with someone who is good with lyrics, melody, vocals, instruments, and production. Really, all of the above (first paragraph), but my most critical need is production, in case anyone only wants to do that part. But it would be nicer to collaborate in more areas than that.
I never write love songs, so this will be different for me.
Vicki
-
Hi All
I added a list of prospective entrants to the first post above. For colaborations please do talk, or we can also make some suggestions if needed.
All the best with it!
-
I'm willing to collab with anyone on the list and will try to provide whatever you need (except production, which I just haven't been able to get figured out yet). You can find examples of my songwriting on my soundcloud account (link in my signature). Most of the songs there are drafts, so keep that in mind, but you can hear my voice on the solo pieces and some examples of my writing, so you can decide if you would like to collab with me.
I have an idea for a lyric and it does have a twist. :) Anyone interested?
-
Let me sign up on this! This will be my first time on this. So this will be a new experience. I can do the lyrics in any genre (pop, country, rock etc.). I'd love to collaborate with someone who can do the melody and the production side.
I've been writing finisihed lyrics on love songs. And I can write good twist! Who's In ;D
-
Hi All - less than 60 days to go now. Any new entrants? Any colabs settled yet? Anyone still without a colab partner that needs one?
Let us know here!
-
Hi folks
As Adam has said only 60 days to go so we need to get those interested in finding a collaboration partner hitched up.
The most common form of collaboration would seem to be a marriage of lyric to music and I think I'd be right in saying that there are plenty of music writers who would be happy to collaborate if they were given a lyric to work with.
So if you have a lyric to fit the theme it might be best to post it in the lyric section stating that you are looking for a partner for the competition and I'm sure you'll get some interest. You can also post your intention here with a link to the lyric so that it is less likely to get missed.
I know that some of us are having a struggle with the 'happy' thing so if you lyric writers can overcome that we can get the ball rolling here.
Although breaking up is hard to do it seems that writing a song about it is easier and I bet if we had a poll between 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division versus 'Love Will Keep Us Together' by Captain and Tennille we know who would win.
So you joyful lyric writers, help us miserable songwriters out with a 'happy-with-a-twist-love-song lyric and we'll see if we can do better than The Captain & Tennille (though this song was written by Neil Sedaka so it's a bit of a tall order....nevertheless....)
Anybody else who has any thoughts on collabs or anything to do with the comp please let us know.
Happy New Year all of you.
-
Yes, I am interested in collaborating with someone. I've only been participating here in these forums for a short time (in spite of how long I've been registered), and I don't know people or good ways to invite collaborators.
I have a lyric idea (with a twist) and would love to work with someone who prefers writing music OR someone who likes to work together on the whole song. Basically, I'm flexible. I haven't written the lyric yet.
I am currently unable to do any recording beyond a single track, but I hope to figure out the problem within the next week so I can listen to one track while recording another. If that doesn't happen, the best I'll be able to do with production is play a guitar and sing on one track and then send the track to a collaborator for finishing.
Vicki

Let me know!
-
Vicky - if possible I would recommend getting your lyric going in the lyric section so people can see the idea for themselves. It doesn't have to be 100% complete of course.
-
Sounds like a plan. I'll work on that and get something up soon (like in a day or so).
-
Hi, I'm Paul and I'd love to collaborate with someone who can sing,
I've posted my lyrics Ya Give Me The Toots In the lyrics forum today and of anyone wants to put them to music I'd be honored.
I'd also like to submit a solo song if that's ok
Many thanks
Paul
-
I have posted my starter lyrics in the Lyrics forum here:
http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/lyric-reviews/february-challenge-looking-for-collab-partner/ (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/lyric-reviews/february-challenge-looking-for-collab-partner/)
The title is "Everybody Wants You, Baby".
Looking for a collaborator to set to music and also possibly help polish the lyrics, if interested in that area as well. But, for sure, the music.
Vicki
-
I'm working on song that will fit the bill nicely so count me in as well (solo)
-
Consider yourself in the running then Johan.
Cheers!
-
I think I will have something ready in time as a collab.
BTW - are we allowed to participate in more than one collab entry?
Forgive me if this is already stated above.. :(
Paul
-
We did say one colab and one solo... But two colabs and no solo instead seems fine to me...
-
Add me to the list, I don't want to miss the fun :)
-
Good to have you with us DevyE.
-
Cheers Viscount, you're a gentleman.
-
Done! ;D
Do I get any special prize for being the first one to submit a song?
https://soundcloud.com/jambrains/dream-in-color-final
-
Yes!
You win a signed copy of the self-help bestseller 'Mummy, Why Does Everybody Hate Me?" by I. M. A. Smartarse.
Congratulations!

Congratulations!
ROFLMAO!!
Thanks you so very much, I'll put that one next to the draft copy of my yet-to be-published autobiography "It's lonely at the top but the view is great" ;D
-
Though, you are definitely in the lead right now!
-
Er..I'm gonna submit a song but can't figure out where to put it... ??? ???
sorry for being so daft...
Kevin ???
-
Hi Kevin - we are putting them in lyrics/WIP/finished songs as usual but you should post a link here as well so we know which one and where to find it. Though if you are in, the rest of us may as well get our coats... ;)
-
Thanks Adam, although I do have another question, I will post a different song in the competition than the one posted now..can I post this as a competition entry and is that consdered seperate to the current post or do I have to wait untill my next legal post..
I believe there are lots of potential winners out there..in particular Jambrains...
thank you for your patience Adam.. :)
best, Kevin :) :)
-
You're not the first to ask ;)
What I've been saying is that normal rules apply - in principle the competition songs are no different from other songs so it should be two weeks between. I guess if we get near the deadline and you're not really posting it for feedback then it can just be posted on here and noone will have a problem with that.
Hope that makes sense...
Cheers
Adam

Hi..this is my song submission for the contest..

Just posted my submission in the WIP section

Hi Folks :)
I'm a bit late to this...but i've had an idea for something...
is it too late to add my name to the list of entries?
i wrote most of the lyric today...after i read the thread (particularly the bit about a love song WITH A TWIST)
i don't really do love songs...but i do like a twist...
i'll doodle about with a tune for a couple of days...and if nothing presents itself can i throw it open for a collaboration?
i can help with recording, playing guitar/bass etc if necessary...
-
Paul - this thread is just for info - anyone can enter right up until 29th Feb - there is no need to declare yourself here if stealth is your thing.
Go for it.
Things heating up....
-
Well...I knocked this out today after writing the lyrics on Friday.
https://soundcloud.com/thefuneralcrasher/honeymoon-at-home
It's a love song...with a twist...i really enjoyed doing it...it was a great idea for a competition...cheers for organising it :)
-
OK peoples, 29 days to go! Some strong contenders already but plenty of time to get in there. Anyone welcome.
For last Summer's Dreams competition I think there were 8 entrants and we should be well on the way to surpassing that.
Don't let production issues hold you back: a good song recorded on your phone should have just as much chance as any other.

Well that's a good point Adam ;) After all, it's a songwriting comp. and that should have nothing to do with production :o :o
-
I am new to this but I am definitely in! Really enjoying this and I can't wait to hear more. Good luck to everyone! I will be submitting a solo song i wrote about love few months ago 😍 I first posted my entry in the finished songs section and I believe it was removed. I moved it to the WIP section so I hope it's now entered correctly.
-
Finally finished our Valentine's song (with a slight twist) - but it is happy. :o :o
Clock is ticking everyone.
-
Deleted this song but thanks for the feedback.
All the best to those that enter :)
-
Just wanted to say once again what a great idea this is - there are loads of fab entries...enthusiasm for song of the month seems to be struggling a little...but this is proving quite inspirational...really looking forward to the next one :)
-
OK - here's our entry by Viscount Cramer Orchestra, CrystalSuzy and yours truly:

Many thanks to my collab'rs and advanced thanks to anyone who listens ;D ;D!

Here's our entry.

Happy songs don't sit well. ;D ;
-
Just 14 days to go and entries flooding in...
Don't leave yours too late! As already said, don't let production issues hold you back, the most important thing is that everyone hears your song....
-
I'll give this a shot.... :P
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=9782051
Although, I'm much better with tears in beers 8)
Thanks!
-Tom
-
I'm trying not to let production issues hold me back, but <sigh> I'm pretty sure I at least need a melody. All I have is lyrics and a rhythm. And a melody I'm pretty sure has already been used....

Hi !
I'm new to this, so hopefully I'm following the right etiquette but would like to submit my WIP song She's My Cooch, which my love song to a girl who who is not necessarily song beautiful but is still the girl of my dreams!
http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/feedback-on-works-in-progress/she's-my-cooch-acoustic-demo/
And then. ....can I submit a lyric also?
The twist here is that the guy is trying to woo the girl even though they have tried to this work more before, on more than one occasion, and it never worked before. ....but was always eventful, so he Can't Wait To Make The Same Mistakes
http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/lyric-reviews/i-can't-wait-to-make-the-same-mistakes/
Many thanks
Hourly I haven't broken any guidelines or rules
Paul
-
Hi Paul - you're in with She's my Cooch...
You can have a solo entry and a colab so the lyric will need a colaborator to take it on - not too much time but maybe someone will step up!
Cheers!
-
Thanks Paul
Glad I'm in !!
-
This is my second collab entry - hey! I was told we could enter two collabs :) and, well, bin sent me this fantastic track with a great groove....
http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/feedback-on-works-in-progress/guilty-pleasures-collab-with-binladeda/
-
I'm in !
Recorded a suitable toon this afternoon after turning off the wireless in disgust during the Gloucester-Saracens match (Gloucester were awful...).
According to my calculations my 14 day period since last posting a WIP is up in a few days time so I'll post then. The tune is called Unknown Man # 89 - a love song named after an Elmore Leonard novel. Hopefully not too many of those in the comp' so far.
Cheers
Derek
-
Del - I reckon you should post it anyway as I don't think you've posted a finished song recently.
All others - clock is ticking! Eight days to get your final entry in. The organisers may be flexible if you post your song while it is still Feb 29th in some timezone of the world somewhere, but at some stage we have to call it a day!
Great field so far - really liking this competition (and the creative definitions we all are finding of "happy" and "twist") :D
-
I have a song which I should have ready this week, so I'll post it this coming w/e in the Finished Thread
Tom.
-
My solo entry is in....
Great comp guys. BIG well done to
the organisers and all involved.
Good luck..
-
Wow ! I have listened to so many top quality entries for this competition that even getting a short list together is going to be really difficult. There's at least seven songs in my personal top five :) Good luck with sorting this out guys and big thanks for hosting it. Brilliant idea
Cheers

Hey John, There is no short list for this comp...it's not like the SOTM :) People just vote for their top 3 choices ;D ;D
-
I did post my Valentine entry, but in case I was supposed to post it in this thread, here it is. You may have already listened to it; I'm just doing this to make it easier to find when people are voting. Sorry I didn't do it here in the first place....

-
I count nine entries in the Valentine contest. Am I missing any? I want to make sure to hear them all!
-
I still have a song to enter, so there might be others still yet to come ;D ;D
-
I'm intending to post an entry at the weekend ;D
-
Talk about writer's block! this one has had me in a right two-and-eight. I was joking when I said happy is hard for me but ... it seems it's bleedin' impossible!
Still hopeful of pulling it out of the bag though ;)
-
Hey everyone - I count 17 entries so far and if we get Suzy, Tom and Shiny's in we could hit 20!
I'll post a list of what I have. Please please please post something in this thread if you are in and haven't done so so no-one is missed!
When I've got the whole list then please also check for broken links, wrong versions or mind changes!
Awesome competition so far! Exclamation marks!!
-
List of entrants so far is in post #1 of this thread - please review and let me know any mistakes/changes...
-
Hi!
I just realized that the song I posted 10 min ago more or less fits the theme, and I am even right on time .... so here goes, my entry: Hopeless (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/song-reviews/hopeless/)
Thanks for all the work you put into this!
Bye Wolfi
-
Like it or not :o Here's my entry ::) ::)

-
Wolfy and Suzy - great to have you in! And tboswell I see now too! That makes 19 so far I think... Deadline tonight - any more takers? How about you ShinyThang?
-
I only found 18. Which one am I missing? Here they are in alphabetical order (did I get the titles right?):
Bittersweet
Dancing with My Cooch
Dream in Color
Easier Said Than Done
Everybody Wants You, Baby
Galaxy
Glad Song Try It
Guilty Pleasures
Honeymoon at Home
I'll Love You for All Time
I'm So Superficial
Life Looks Good in Blue
Mono No Aware
Shop until You Drop

-
Vicky - I think you may have missed Hopeless - I posted the list I had the other day at #1 in this thread and will post the final one there again tomorrow!
-
Yes, that's it. I thought I had Hopeless in my list, but I don't! Thanks!
-
Adam,
Just fired my solo one Torpedo into finished songs thread so that 20.
:)
Neil
-
Great - all done here! Congrats everybody - 20 songs is a great effort and the entire thing has been a total success in my eyes.
Only two things to do now (i) listen and vote (I will do a complete list of entrants and instructions for voting); and (ii) get back to writing miserable songs! Hurrah!
-
I agree Adam...this comp is a total success with all of the amazing entries :)
Everyone's a winner already :o
Thanks you so much for organizing all the songs so well, and I hope everyone votes :o
We need to promote this in the finished songs section, encouraging and reminding people to vote :o
-
Thanks crystalsuzy, and for sure what a great competition. Full list of entrants and links to the songs at the top here: http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/competitions/the-new-winter-spring-valentine's-competition-enter-by-29th-feb-2016/
-
Started to work my way through the entries and wow! that is one mouthful of good music!
I will review each entry as I work through them and encourage everyone to do the same, should give each and every contender a hefty dose of feedback.
-
My oh my. I was going to vote tonight but there is so much quality stuff out there I will have to listen some more. I had a deffo top three earlier but has changed now. Great comp guys :)
-
Okay so, I missed the deadline! (Think I missed the starting gun!) .... I'm looking forward to listening to all the entries and will try to play my part by reviewing and voting.
Well done everyone who managed what I couln't
-
Wow this is tough. I have narrowed it down to a half dozen but every time I play each one I think "It has to be in the top three". Bit stuck, if I'm honest! Very good problem to have :-)
-
I had to come up with custom scoring system to get it down to three.
Hard to choose but a pleasure to work through all the fine and impressively varied work :)
-
Yeah, me too. I have them all on a chart and compare each one to every other one, then count how many times each one comes out on top. If I have to break a tie, I just look at the comparison between those two to see which one came out on top. I'm maybe half done with that process. It's tedious. I have to keep going back to listen.
-
Easy, just vote my song number 1 and then pick two random for second and third place. ;D ;D
Nah, seriously, I agree, voting in this comp is a very diffucult jobb albeit very enjoyable!
-
What song? Oh yeah.....that was weeks ago.....peaked too early that one.
-
What song? Oh yeah.....that was weeks ago.....peaked too early that one.
Still waiting for my special price btw... ;D
-
I have voted!!! Whew! That was grueling.....
-
Voting about half way through... by a couple of points a leader has started to emerge but there are about 10 songs just behind...
Easy listening, tough decisions! Let's get as many votes in as we can.
-
Wow, great compo. There's some cracking tunes to choose between here. How long do we have to get our votes in?
...ah found it... we've still got a week
-
I've voted ;D ;D
Great comp. guys. Some fine songs on display.
An excellent advert for the forum ;D ;D
Some real talent around here at the moment. It's
a real pleasure to be amongst you ;D ;D Great to
see so much collaborating going on as well.
Love you all.....and Good Luck ;D
-
I just listened through and voted. I also want to point out a mistake with my name listed above. It's "Patrick Kordish" not Peter...lol Great work everyone! I really enjoyed listening to all of the entries!
-
Patrick - so sorry, my fault, I have no idea how I renamed you... I will correct this everywhere I see it!
-
Arghhh, this is so difficult! So many good songs, I just can't pick my top 3!!!!
Well, still some time left.....
-
Yeah, JB...
I really struggled to pick my top three too...which, really, is a great endorsement of all of the different entries.
Paul
-
Not long now - last day for voting! Get them in now, the entrants deserve it.
-
Very last chance folks.
I don't know if the disqualification if you don't vote threat is real and up and running on this competition, but if it is and any of you runners haven't voted please do it now or any votes that have been cast in your favour will have been wasted....they could have gone somewhere else.
Now that's not very fair is it?
-
That's it! To paraphrase a nameless and inconsequential songwriter: "Voting's Finished".
If you want to vote now, where have you been for the last three weeks?! The jury will consider all the votes and get back to you with a (virtual) golden (imaginary) envelope.
Watch this space!
-
Watch this space!
I am. Not much to see though.. ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Patience grasshopper....

Congratulations and great job to all the winners! I am so pleased to see two of my picks in the top four. :D Even though, on another day I could easily have voted differently, as the choices were so difficult!

Great comp.
Must be the best for total quality since I've been a member of the forum. (Excluding our effort, of course.)
Many congrats Tom, and all the runners up and other entries. Almost impossible to pick a top 3 for me. Certainly didn't expect to be part of it.
Looking forward to the next comp.

Fantastic top quality competition. Congrats to Tom and the runners up. The winning song is an absolute earworm. I found it so difficult to select a top three. Many thanks to Adam and the count for organising this. An inspiration.
