Title: Next competition - any ideas?
Post by: habiTat on January 15, 2013, 02:12:05 PM
Hi All,

I just wondered if there were any ideas for the next comp. The conspiracy one runs until March so we've got a bit of time to think but the earlier we decide on something the earlier we can start writing. :)

So far the ideas I'm aware of and can remember are...

• 20 words 100 seconds (songsthatcry)

• Requiem (funeral songs)  (Dutchbeat)

...a 20 word requiem?  :D

cool, now that is a challenge!

20 words 100 seconds is a bit to similar to the 'short song' comp we had....

How abouts an "out of your comfort zone" competition.

As in:

Those that write acoustic ditties instead write an electro piece, or a heavy rock number.

Those that write electro dance instead grab a guitar or piano...

Etc etc

Anything can be entered so long as it isn't from your normal style(s).

Might be a little tricky to enforce but it could be (a) interesting and (b) a good exercise for people.

I suppose it might be more demanding, which could be a pain, as you'd need a decent recording programme and/or access to instruments other than your usual axe.

Just an idea tho!

right for me its got to be

An acoustic song

or live you tube video

Lets here the song only

Nighthawk - you need to do something new :o

@James  I quite like that idea, my instruments are very limited though so something electric from me might sound very 'Casio' circa 1986 :D

@Kafla  Do you mean, no FX, no editing or enhancement/reverb etc, just a video using the camera mics? a proper 'unplugged' performance?

hey acoustic song live youtube video sounds good like Kafla! one vocal one instrument!

I like the idea of something 'out of the comfort zone' as I have something I could submit already :D

I also like the idea of doing a live youtube video. I would add that it should be a song that you have not recorded in any form before. (So it forces you to get the writing done before laying down any sounds) I think that could be fun & challenging.

Oooh. Another idea

A 12 bar blues comp

Only using the classic 12 bar I VI V setup. Maybe doesn't have to be blues but does have to follow the format...

And yeah I'd be happy to record a fresh song for a YouTube comp

If the "out of comfort zone" comp was chosen, may leave that for next time (ie finish september) so people can plan ahead?

Err... that's out of my comfort zone, I don't really know what that means ???   :D

Youtube comp sounds really good to me, I like that idea, it also has the advantage of us being able to put faces to names  :)

12 bar one sounds good! hmm out of comfort zone! think i would have to play the spoons as another instrument then for that one i reckon!

Its fairly easy to follow if you know your chord theory. If we were to do it me and some other chord-ies can write out some premade sequences so you can just copy them. Once you play it you WILL know the sequence and what it sounds like

I thought it might be quite cool to take the classic set up and see what we all do differently with it

Plus I kinda wanted to do one anyway ;)

i like the out of comfort zone idea best now....

because it leaves the creativity open, but we can learn something new, force ourselves not to do what we would normally do

we could perhaps give tips about what would be fitting to be something we don't normally do...i gues i would not be allowed to use loads of tracks, fx's etc, and i could perhaps try to make something like a country song?? i probably don't have the skills to make a country song, but i can try

Oh dear..... that's worse than Hawkwind's (?) famous line...

I like to eat bananas
Because they've got no bones
I smoke marijuana
Because it gets me stoned

£500 Jessops voucher to the person who can identify who wrote / sang these lyrics......

How about a piece of music with no lyrics that is no longer than 30 seconds. That would be ideal for a thrity second ad?
Have always fancied doing that if anyone wants to have a go?

Ok what about a kids TV theme?

Come up with a kids show, be it cartoon, kids soap, whatever, write a basic outline of the show and compose a theme song.

Lots of potential for variety, think Jackanory, Thundercats, Gummy Bears, Blue Peter... etc.

They would all be so different :)

I, cough, "vote" for 12 bars.

Cos I nominated it, innit ;)

However.... The current comp is a little more limiting (until the rules changed), so perhaps a nice open comp that allows for interpretation and minimal muso' knowledge could be a good idea?

yeaaaah, that was a bit of an oversight, ah well :)

12 bar seems popular though, maybe if we get someone who knows the basic technical criteria (ie typical chord sequences etc) cough cough JN  ;) to assist, it could still be open to a lot of interpretation.

I am as surprised as you. I have been flip-reversing sh#t for a decade or more now, but it seems to still be a scary zone for people!

And I am happy to do a beginners FAQ for 12bar blues, leaving only to bare bones in. I like the idea of people using 12 bars but perhaps doing something different :)

I'm sure I couldn't manage 12 bars at my age [actually I was going to suggest so old fashioned rock'n'roll] but happy to pay my dues and do the blues....

perhaps an idea for one of our comps after the 12 bars blues.....elevator music  ;D ;D

who can write the most non-intrusive spineless piece of elevator music???  ::) ::) ::)

might be more difficult than it seems

Thats cool Dutch, dum de dum de dum... I like that :D

Another idea I had was the 'Difficult Sentence' comp, whereby we all have to write a song containing the same obscure sentence, for example, "Another day at the office for poor old Clive" or "It's Tuesday but it feels like I should be eating curry"..

They are rubbish, but you get the idea, we could all offer sentences forward and run with the best.

:)

I like the funeral song idea, but maybe open it up to songs about death and/or the dying process...

OK everyone, as a relative newcomer how do we coalesce into a decision? Blues, Funerals etc I really don't mind. I've never  done this before and like the idea of writing a song to a brief. What happens next? I seem to recall that there was a batman theme which Tintam seemed to lead...

Hi Neil, ok, well, nobody really seems to take charge of these things, I've kinda taken it on but I'm happy for somebody else to run them, I quite like doing it and I think it helps get people talking and pushing themselves. Tinam did the James Bond comp and it was excellent, but she's quit the forum now.  ???

The current conspiracy/backmasking comp finishes on March 30th so there is still time if you want to enter that one (check the competition board for details) If not, you're right, a decision needs to be made. The general feeling seems to be that we should run with the 12 bar blues idea.

If we are to run with that, maybe we should decide so we can start writing.

EVERYONE IN FAVOUR OF A 12 BAR BLUES BASED COMPETITION SAY AYE!!

If we are GO on that idea, we need someone to write some rules and we need to decide if it is a collabs comp or single entries. As discussed before, a basic outline of the 12 bar theory would also be useful.

AYE!

meaning to say i am in ::)

we don't need rules...just a deadline  ;D, ok April 20th,there you go  ;D and the prize always is that you can ask other songwriters who competed to deliver a track, singing guitar, or lyrics or anything for your next project, so donate something to your next song

come to think of it....nobody ever collected that prize...

i would, but i never managed to win any of these competitions, ever...

mhhh, why would that be  ;)

oh that reminds me, vote for Dutchbin for the conspiracy songcontest...we wil ask Habitat to do the harmonies on our next song which is called Bonkers, and he doesn't have to sing backwards this time
