How can it be a 'moot' point if one of the greatest songwriters ever believed that the songs he forgot were not worthy of developing

That is exactly my point - if he couldn't remember it how did he know it was not worth developing!!!!!
He just used that as his "screening process" but there is no way of knowing how good something was that he forgot! - it may have been a million times better than the songs he wrote - we will never know, hence the "moot point"
The chances are that these songs popped back into his head and ended up being developed anyway
