Title: THE BLUEPRINT CHALLENGE
Post by: habiTat on September 09, 2012, 11:05:54 PM
The Blueprint Challenge

Ok guys, here it is...

Basic Aim/Rules
Using the 'Blueprint' Lyrics below (kindly supplied by Songsthatcry), compose and record a song in the style of your choosing. You may use whatever chords/rhythm/melody you want. The idea is to see how differently each of us fair when presented with the same basic lyrics 'on paper'. Minor flexiblity is allowed, ie. repeating the chorus/omitting the odd tricky line, but where possible, try as best you can to stick to the script. This should be a good test of your ability to be creative and work with something outside of your comfort zone.

Your Submission
Now I understand that you guys are busy people, spending loads of time recording/mixing  a song that someone else wrote may not be high on your list of priorities. Because of this and the fact that this is a challenge in your interpretation of lyrics and not your mixing/production skills, a basic recording will suffice. If you want to call in the London Philharmonic Orchestra and pay George Martin to produce it, thats fine ;) but a basic 'voice/guitar', 'voice/keyboards' recording will be fine.

Deadline...ish?
I have thought about this and I understand that people have work/family/jollies etc. so, three weeks will be the initial duration of the challenge, entries after this time will be ok (it is a challenge, not a competition) but three weeks will be the 'work time' given before your efforts can be posted. Due to the nature of the challenge, hearing someone elses effort early may influence your own work and defeat the object. Because of this, PLEASE DON'T POST YOUR RECORDING UNTIL SUNDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER. By the looks of previous competitions, its probably best to submit your recording on its own thread within this competions board, entitled 'Blueprint entry...' or the like. That way each entry can be reviewed seperately by others. Submissions after this date are fine, just try to avoid listening to other peoples work or you might accidently/subconciously copy them :)

Who wins?
I think in this case, whoever has a go and actually records something will win. To create a song from a set of words which will stand out as an individual, unique audio entity is pretty cool. And given the fact that we've all had the same starting point, it should serve to show how unique each of us are in our thought processes and creativity.

If there is any demand for finding an actual winner by democratic vote, let me know and I'll contact Tone and try to find out how we do a poll once all the submissions are posted.

Ok, I think thats it, if you're finding this thread a bit late, don't worry, feel free to join in, the more, the merrier.

If you decide to join in, just stick your name down on a reply to this thread so we all know who is playing :) and use this thread for any discussions relating to the challenge.

Here is your Blueprint, GOOD LUCK

if there was  still something,,something, left to prove...
don`t you think,.. i wouldn`t make that first move,,
when am i never there, to hold a hand

i have nothing left to prove
and it`s a grove ,i fit in to so easily
so pleasingly ,understand me..babe

and when you break it all down
into the  itty bitty parts..

you still can`t find the piece
where all the trouble starts..

so i will just play your games
and fall in to your arms..
(chorus)
cos,you know i`m only shining my
copper coated heart..

......
i`m a good soldier
and i will soldier on

and if you need a friend
 until the battles won
i`m on your side
till the final charge..
and if your order is to love you
that wish is my command.

(chorus)
cos,you know i`m only shining my
copper coated heart..
...
(MIDDLE
and i glow like  gold
when the sun is out
yes i glow like the gold
in a fire lit sky
on a summers night
and i feel it so right..
feels so right

in my .......
copper coated heart..

cos you know i`m only shining
and you know i`m  only shining

 ..my copper coated heart...

and i will just play your games
and fall in to your arms..

How's it going?

I've managed to establish a rhythm that seems to fit ok and have worked out a chord sequence. I'll admit it is more difficult than I was expecting.. The song structure is not obscure or anything, its just that I didn't write it and I am needing to get my head round it. I've never collaborated before so creating a song from someone elses lyrics is a completely new challenge for me. Quite satisfying now I think I've cracked it though :)

I have the majority sketched now - when's the deadline again?
Title: Re: THE BLUEPRINT CHALLENGE
Post by: habiTat on September 15, 2012, 04:40:27 PM
It's Sunday 30th, another two weeks :(

maybe we should announce on here once we're done and upload them when everyone is ready. I thought it was going to take longer...

Or is it best to stick to the deadline?

Wow, you finished already?  :o
I'm gonna need at least another week for this...

Ok cool, and to be honest, mine's only a simple recording, very minimal, but thats kind of my thing so it doesn't take long once its worked out.

Original deadline it is :)

Good luck and enjoy..

Well, my singing is mediocre at best, so I'm trying to do the "full band" thing with this song to distract from the vocals  ;)

... plus George Martin was busy this week  ;D

Been busy. Not even started yet.  :(

OK. Spent this morning sketching out a possible tune. The loose rhyming scheme and rather random metre of the Blueprint has taken me to what would usually be a starting point. From here I'd now cut some parts and change others to suit my thoughts as I progress. But to follow the rules of this challenge I'll be leaving everything as it was writ! Except to change "grove" to "groove", I assume that was a typo, I may be wrong.  ;)

OK, off to work.

Yep, I've changed grove to groove, I'm sure STC will confirm but it deffo looks like a typo.

Good work though, I thought mine was done, then I left it a day, listened again and now think it needs more work. It was just the age old problem of that honeymoon period just after you've composed something, it seems great at the time but in the cold light of day it actually isn't :(

I'm a Dick !
My printer ran out of ink , so I wrote the words out by hand ,
so I wrote polishing for some strange reason , then struggled
like bell to fit it in , then thought sod it , I'll change it to shining .
What a tosser  :D

Wellll....

I guess they mean the same thing and its only one word. I've left out the odd word to make it flow with my composition (ie the second 'something' in the first line)

You gotta do what you gotta do :)

LOL, JUST READ THAT AS I WENT TO POST THE ABOVE HAHA...

Shining does flow better :)

Which section do we post in , this one ?
Title: Re: THE BLUEPRINT CHALLENGE

Which section do we post in , this one ?

That's what I said in the intro, the only trouble is that this section is a bit quiet and people might not see the entries to review them. It does keep them together though for easy comparison and all regulars should spot them as they appear on the recents list on the home page. So yes, I think we should post them in this section, a bit like the pairs comp.

If they do end up in the main reviews section, make it clear that they are part of the Blueprint challenge so they can be easily identified and don't confuse anybody.

:)

GREAT to have you on board SF. Its more of a challenge than a competition, the next Sunday deadline was just to stop people hearing other versions and inadvertantly being influenced by them. The more the merrier on this :)

This can run and run really :)

Did you listen? What did you... No No save it until Sunday.

It might not be finished yet anyway ;)

Wow this was fun.  Such a challenge trying to stick to the lyrics, there were a couple of pieces that really challenged me but I guess that is what it is all about..........now roll on Sunday so I can hear what everyone has written.

Good luck chaps, I did a version, left it a few days, then realised it was pants. So I've done another version, liked it, then left it a few days and realised it was pants  ??? I've now re-recorded the vocal and I'm still not happy with it. I am planning a bit of harmony recording tomoro in the hope that I can improve it.

I tried to approach this as a challenge, not a competition. I now feel like its a competition of sorts, as I don't want mine to be rubbish  :-\

Well I haven't really progressed past the sketch. Not had much time spare this last couple of weeks. Won't get the chance now before Sunday to make it better so I'll just have to mix what I've got as best I can and post it.  :-\

But it's not a competition (Oh yeah?  :P) so I can always revisit it later.  ;)

Ahh don't worry Dutch, the deadline was only to stop early entries influencing each others work, there is no limit on time, if you want to try again..it'd be great to hear your version. If not, a euro dance re-mix of someone elses version would be pretty cool. ;)

Having just finished work today and listened to it again, there are just to many things not right with the beast as it is.
I'm working again tomorrow (Sunday), but I'm off Monday! Hooray.  ;D

So late Monday my Opus will be posted.......hopefully.....At which point I'll lend an ear to the challengers!  ;)

Hi Steph - I wonder if you realise this project is from 2012? I think you've missed the boat here, but there are plenty of other comps/ challenges coming along all the time. You'll see soon enough as you become part of the community here :)

Welcome aboard :)
