Hello again, old friends. It's been an age, and it's been an age for various reasons (no, I haven't been doing time for crimes against song-writing!). There have been plenty of gigs and lots of life, and even occasionally a new song. I kept meaning to come back and post a few. So here I am.

This one, as with all of mine, uses standard melody # 1, 2, or 3, just a few chords, and is recorded in one main take on the oldest DAW known to man-kind (so production values are at a minimum). Also, as with all of mine, it's really about the lyrics.

I hope you like it. Kinda of nice to be back :-)

Derek

Pulp Fiction Writer

I’m a pulp fiction writer, that’s what I am
I tell tales ‘bout bad luck and trouble, and a down-trodden man
He’s got a six shot pistol, with two shells gone
A three day black-out, he knows something wrong
I’m a pulp fiction writer, that’s what I am

I’m a pulp fiction writer, got a tale to tell
‘Bout a man from out of town and a femme fatale
She was drinking in a bar, spending her day,
Setting ‘em up, knowing hell would pay
I’m a pulp fiction writer, got a tale to tell

Gangsters to the left of him, policeman on the right
Someone stabbed her through the heart, his prints are on the knife
He skipped town on a Mexican truck
But there’s a bounty on his head and the driver’s down on his luck...

I’m a pulp fiction writer, on the low side of town
The stool-pigeon’s crowing, and my man is going down
He fell in love, but she was only in it for fun
She’s got a brother and a cousin and a sawn-off gun
I’m a pulp fiction writer, on the low side of town

Gangsters to the left of him, policeman on the right
Someone stabbed her through the heart, his prints are on the knife
He skipped town on a Greyhound bus
She lied when she told him “It’ll always be the two us”

I’m a pulp fiction writer and it’s plain to see
Everything I write is reality
She had curves to die on, and eyes like sin
She pursed her lips and sucked him in
I’m a pulp fiction writer and my characters are me
Yeah, I’m a pulp fiction writer and my characters are me
West Country Country Boy

Hi, Just listening to this as I write. I'm kind of new here, so nice to know you man...

Sounds great, nice trucker vibe, It's sounds a little towards the low end of your range... nice fretwork too.

Hi Derek. Great to see you back on the forum. Hope all is good with you. Lovely bluesy feel to this and works really well just one / one (plus the harm of course) Your husky voice really suits this type of song as well. Really enjoyed the listen  :)

Yo Derek, good to see you still and breathe man!

There's a touch of McGuinness Flint about this one, lovely folky feel, nice acoustic playing too.

I'd agree with CPM,I'd like to hear you sing it up a tone or so.

I was playing your 'Ten Degrees Colder' track recently, man that's a great tune.  8)

Del, Neat storyline and well executed, simple but effective.
Agree that the key should be raised a bit.
Best line for me was “ She had curves to die on, and eyes like sin”
Liked the to the left.. to the right in the M8 a touch of Stealers Wheel?
Cool lead work and loved the little bit of harp - more please.
Going to have another listen
:-)

I always enjoy your songs and had noticed your absence. Even though I haven't been here all that much myself this year. I sure like your guitar playing. And the song is more interesting than most of what's in the mainstream these days. I appreciate that. Don't really have anything to add to other comments beyond that.

The lyrics are very good and thoroughly engaging.  There's almost a nod to Stealers Wheel in there too "Gangsters to the left of him, Policemen on the right." It's cool to do that, assuming  if it was your intention. Listening to the acoustic guitar, it sounds very good  and doesn't suffer for the DAW that you are using. I've been listenng to Paul McCartney and I could imagine him pwriting in this style too, alongside the many other styles that he embraces.  You've devoted a lot of work to this and a considerable amount of song craft. they lyrics tell a really engaging story. This is such a well done song. There aren't any surprises but it does exactyl what it say on the tin. I enjoyed listening and the accompanying images are so cool. Well done my friend!
