Listening right now!

Parts of it remind me of Damon Albarn's recent solo work.
Nice job!
-
Thanks for listening Todd! Glad you found something to like :)
-
Must have a listen later.

Oh wow...
What a quality piece of work Tone. Delicate, intricate and achingly, beautifully crafted.
I bought the physical cd,I don't like downloads, they may be cheaper, but I feel cheated without something tangible to hold. :D
Thanks for posting Tone,I have a feeling I'll be listening to this a lot.
-
Ah so it was YOU! Thanks so much for your support and kind words Skub, it's nice to get such encouraging feedback and I really hope you enjoy listening in more detail when the cd arrives. 😀

Oooh! This is exciting. I like it as well. I don't know whether its just because I listen to way too much Smiths but I get Morissey vibes from your singing. Which I love because I love him haha. But in your own way, defo - not too obvious and I get a few other vibes too.... The instrumental parts are really interesting and different which is perfect. I think my favourite track is Killing is my Business the remix.
-
hiya tone I had a peek I thought it would be all folky just acoustic guitar & a bit of piano.... but its fabulous full of beautiful songs that have been given realy elegant arrangements ... some lovely playing realy tasteful….are they all friends of yours on it?
Anyway I didnt actually expect to like it ...& I didnt ;D ....I loved it ;D …..so Ive bought it
& I hope a lot of people will & you have success with it :)
-
Wow, thanks Helena and thanks Tina! I'm so pleased that you both liked it! :D It's just me and my producer playing the parts, and my wife Cathy doing backing vocals on a couple of tracks, and a drummer on a couple of tracks too.
THANK YOU for spending your hard-earned money on my humble record :D

I will report back when I have ;D

Hey Tone,
I'm a big fan. Songwriting is a gift of yours.
I look in every now and again to see what's happening on ye olde forum.
Hope you're good and Boydie's a great choice for New Boss Duties :)
-
Man,this is good. :)
Fav track so far is 'dignity'. :)
-
Thank you guys! :D You make an old(er than you probably think) man very happy! #RandomFact 'dignity' is more than 20 years old (which obviously means I wrote it when I was FIVE), although it did undergo minor surgery (added an extra chord) a few years back. Everything else on the record is bang up to date though (or it was when I stared recording it 4 years ago! :o )

Tone,
Apologies, I finally got to download and listened to it. Sumptuous soundscape you created there. I get updated, off-kiltered, Crowded House vibe, constantly changing, subtle fragments and lovingly intertwined melodies. Fab.
How much work and love went into it? I remember you said you were working closely with a producer. Some insight would be great to understand how you did it would be great if you've the time.
:) :)

Hi Neil- no need to apologise, I'm just glad you wanted to listen :)
Happy to lift the lid on this for you sir. It was a lot of work and a lot of love, but much of it was done in my absence. Due to factors such as life, needing to earn money and such like, it was a bit of a patchwork approach. The first 4 songs we recorded, I went to the studio, laid down piano/ guitar/ vocal tracks, and left my producer to get on with it. At that point I'd only intended to record an EP - but producer persuaded me to extend it into an album.
So the next batch were done with me recording guitar/ vocal at home, and sending him the files remotely. Sometimes he sent back things that blew me away, and sometimes I had to send him a long list of changes. One song never made it to the album because we both heard it so differently.
But I was running out of money, and making records is expensive! So I began dipping my hand into home producing, and the last 3-4 were built very strongly on my demos - of course with extra production elements, but the core ideas remained.
In the beginning, I allowed him pretty much free reign. I didn't know how the songs should sound or even if they were any good, and I think it was a great experience foe both of us. He was used to clients with very strong ideas who needed to OK everything as it happened, whereas I just said "surprise me"! It was nerve wracking, but also sort of liberating. And really exciting when something brilliant arrives in your inbox.
But as my confidence and home production skills grew, I was keen to be a little bit more hands on, which also lowered the cost and sped the thing up.
In an ideal world, I'd like to do my next album at the studio and be there for the whole thing, but reality will probably dictate a similar approach to this one. On the whole, I'm really pleased with it, and although there are things I'll do differently next time, I wouldn't know about them if I hadn't had this experience.
Does that cover it? :) Really glad you enjoyed it :D
-
I'm listening now and am really enjoying it quite a bit!
I'll have my full report sometime soon!
-
I finally have a smart phone and was able to get this album from the google store...or whatever it's called. Music store? Anyway, I have it at last. Already listened to the whole thing. Very nice. :)
-
Thanks for listening Calia and Todd. It's a strange feeling knowing you're out there, letting your internal critics run rampant over all my years of hard work :D
But I really appreciate it :)
-
Cool! Downloaded it from iTunes
Killing is my business is a tune! I get the Damon album reference aswell
-
I've listened to the first 6 songs, and it's a very enjoyable listen I think my favourite is north of the woods, love the acoustic guitar, piano and electric riffs. What is the lyric at 1.14 call off the .....?
Got a few days off next week so hoping to listen to the second half.
Impressive stuff
-
Yay! Thanks for downloading C&D :) The lyric you're asking about is 'call off the dogs' - I know I kinda swallowed that line somewhat. It's easy to forget no-one else has your lyrics memorised when they listen to your recordings :) Hope you enjoy side B :)

I thought it was, that's a great lyric.
I was hoping it was gonna be something else then I could have stole call off the dogs ;)
-
Well... I'm sure I'm not the first person to say 'call off the dogs' in a song, so steal away my friend. If it fits what you want to say, it's a nice line to sing. Really glad you like it :)
-
Lake Street Dive has a song named "Call Off Your Dogs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMEPgLxvNPk)". ;D I know this cuz I love Rachael Price's voice and style.
-
Never heard of this lot until now, but damn, she does have a great voice! Shame they nicked my lyric though ;) :p :D

Hey Tone,
Congratulations on getting an album out, and such a lovely one at that!
Finally sat down to have a listen on Spotify and wasn't expecting to like it so much (thought I'd just try out a few songs), I'm usually quite peculiar in my tastes and it's a hard task to keep me interested for a whole album, but a great variety and quality kept me hooked xD
"Under the Bed" and "Raised by Wolves" I think are the stand-outs for me.
Will be listening again.
Cheers,
Scott.
-
Outstanding work Tone. At first I was a bit disappointed to see no "Straitjacket". But the rest more than made up for it. My personal favorite (not by much) - Opium Fiend.
-
'Under The Bed' is the one for me. That chorus lift/change made, and still makes me, very envious.
Well done for realising the dream Tone.
2nd album? Always a sticky one apparently....another few years yet then!
-
Viscount, Adam, Scott, you're all diamond geezers! :)
Thanks for taking time out to listen - that's living the dream already in my book - and for taking the time to share your thoughts.
2nd album is already written and ready to record (including straitjacket, Adam) but I have zero money and some very heavy life commitments right now, so getting to the studio for enough time to make it happen just isn't going to happen (yet). In the meantime I'm trying to open up my routine enough to make another instrumental album in my home studio (and re-mix the first one) so at least I have some projects on the go. And who knows, maybe I'll even write another song one day (as the well contains nowt but dust at the moment...)
