Title: Producing and that stuff
Post by: Theresa on February 07, 2024, 05:12:48 PM
Heya guys, this is the first part of a new track I am working on:

My goal has been to learn how drums work and dip into producing, I been using eq and reverb in everything and compressor only in the vocals, so any tips on how those things are going would be really appreciated.

As over anything else really. I been honestly feeling like there is something lacking throughout the song tbh, but I am a bit hesitant on adding a new instrument.

Lyrics:

Costas largas
ocupam minha vista
Estou segura
mas e se essa for sua ultima visita

Braços fortes
que podem me salvar
Mas me pergunto
como alguém como eu pode te ajudar

Talvez não tenha a vontade
Talvez não tenha a coragem
Talvez não tenha as vantagens com que você nasceu
mas eu

queria poder
andar com você
no mesmo caminho que você escolheu
mas eu

não fui feita para lutar

Translation:

(A) broad back
occupy my view
I'm safe
but what if this is your last visit?

Strong arms
that can save me
But I wonder
how can someone like me help you?

Maybe I don't have the will
Maybe I don't have the courage
Maybe I don't have the advantages you were born with
but I

wish I could
walk with you
on the same path you chose
but I

wasn't made to fight

Great stuff @Theresa (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=23147) and fascinating to see your progress. I can see how you have worked on eq and drums. What DAW are you using to record your songs ? I see from your previous posts that you are recording your vocals using an old webcam mic. If you invested in a reasonable quality condenser mic you will be amazed by the quality. They are not expensive these days. My current microphone cost in the region of £85 and I’m very pleased with it. Great to see you getting in to recording your music 😀

Thank you for the suggestion @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269)! I will check and see if I can get one of those at one point ^^ and I am using Reaper.

I've never used reaper, it dies look promising, though.
Optically at least, it's similar to my weapon of choice, cubase 13.
I find they look analogue.

As to your track
Sounds to me like a successful introduction to Daws.
I'd advise you to be playful, obtaining insights along the way.
Have fun, direct experience is better than advice.
Be patient, look into explanations of limters, compressors and equalisers etc.
Understanding will come gradually,
as will the vocabulary which will help you get on with given advice.

That is good to know @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) ! I really liked it so I hope to use it for a long long time.

I see, thanks @rightly (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20219) ! I have always been curious about cubase, but sadly it is outside my $$$. But it looks dope! I will play around, and take a look on limiters which I didn't check into yet.

Well cubase
Like reaper, pro-tools, logic, Ableton  & others
Theyre all top daws.
I'd say the best is the one you're familiar with.
(And avoid getting tied up in talk with those who obsess about gear. 😆)

The best is to have a good song and passion.
Learn the technical stuff, with a mind to tighten the workflow.

There's not much to limiters but yeah. Know them.
I tend to get hyperfocused for hours.
It's fun but at some point, i cant be sure of what's good and what's not.
A smoothe workflow is the thing.

@Theresa (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=23147) - Welcome to production, just keep doing stuff, you'll learn a lot on the way,I've found that the more you do the more the $$$ are found, and the more one can do, so watch a few videos, ask loads of questions here, (we'll always help)

The main thing is a great song doesn't need great production, it just benefits from it, was Rock around the clock  played on the best HiFi systems? nope crappy radios the size of a Kelvinator fridge...
