"In the summer time, when the weather is fine, you can stretch right up and touch the sky..." or maybe write a song... :)
Here we are peeps, April already, the snow has only just melted and spring is finally in the air. What better way to get into that shorts & t-shirt, sun screen kinda mood than sit indoors, while the rain still pours and bash out a new tune.
Think, cruising along Blackpool seafront in your ford escort cabriolet on a warm June evening, think piña colada's by the swimming pool, think beer gardens and wasps...
Write and record a song for the summer. :) :) :)
No rules, just make it summery, that's it!
Ideally we want people to collaborate on this, it's more interesting that way. But if you'd rather work alone, that's cool too. Put your name down here if you're playing, and if you do want to team up with someone, say what you want to do, ie. produce, write, provide instrumentals, sing etc...
HabiTat and myself are organising this one, and we'll gather your names up and match you as best we can.
There really is no reason to not play !!

EVERYONE'S A WINNER... (here's the good bit)
Those of you who were here for the Pawprint challenge will be familiar with this format but for those who don't know, here's what we'll be doing with the finished songs. A Bandcamp page will be created to showcase your songs in an online 'Summer Tunes' album.
After the closing date everyone will have the chance to vote for their top 3 favourites via PM to me.
The winning song will be song number ONE on the playlist and will be the first to play out when the album is played. Second will be track two and third will be track three.
The page will be set up in support of Barnsley and District Animal Welfare (BADAW) and people will be able to donate to the charity by text message and download the album or individual songs. All downloads will be free but we'll ask for the donation by text on an honesty box basis. If you don't want your song to be featured on the album, just say and we'll leave it off. We just wanted to do some good with all your hard work and talent :)

So the album will support a good cause AND show off the concentrated talent and skill that is this forum :)

i'm in i've started to write a song on me acoustic, what i would come up with will be a vocal and acoustic guitar thats about it so for me thats what i would be able to do and would be mega if someone could produce it and work on the song!

I would say let's stick with one song per artist/team to keep it fair.
But you are more than welcome to join several collabs, or enter one song as a solo artist and one
as part of a collab :)

I am in, but this time i would like to enter as a solo act, or as part of my existing collaboration with Binladeda, if that is ok...
i have two other collaborative projects with other forum members i have promised to work on, which makes another new collaboration too much / too complex (timewise)
but i love to try to enter a very silly summer song.....i think it may be a song with Dutch lyrics that will sound bizarre

count me in however, where I am winter is approaching fast and so it will be extremely difficult for me to get into the joyous summer spirit, therefore, I believe I should be entitled to some dispensation, perhaps a bonus 30 votes for my entry :) - sounds fair?

You can post it in the competitions board whenever you like, or if its not yet quite finished I'd recommend posting it on the 'works in progress' board (include 'summer comp' in the title) you'll get a lot more reviews/advice in there.
And I think we said one entry per 'team' so you can enter another song but it must be as part of a collaboration. Just say on this thread what collab 'skills' you have to offer and myself and Michael will try to pair people up when we have enough names.

As for colab. skills; I prefer to write music to words, not a great singer and absolutely hopeless at mixing and mastering. So, I guess it's just music then ;)

Yep....count me in ;D I'll definitely enter a solo. Probably be doing a collab with Dutch as well....don't know about that though, that will be up to Dutch.....he's the helmsman of our musical spaceship ;D ;D Not sure about putting my name in the hat for the other collabs...it's a time thing, as I'm already involved in a few other projects, depends how they're going....when's the deadline for entries into that ??

I'll see what I can do. I'll try to write something summery, but most of my songs end up sounding sad :p
No collabs for me though. It's too chaotic over here with my master's paper and entry exams for Radio school next year to know for sure when I'll find time to write, so if anyone would be paired up with me, it would be a real bummer ;)

i know this has been discussed, but for this competition, why not say it is allowed to enter more than one song, as long as it is made in different teams....so only one solo attempt and for the rest you have to team up with other forumites
and perhaps we can let the teams be formed naturally....i would be very interested if someone would be prepared to write summery lyrics that i could have a go on

I was told earlier that only one solo entry per person. Then you could enter again in collaboration with another person or persons.

Yes what i meant was, everyone can submit a solo and do a collaboration if they want to.........then again i`m not organizing this .. ;)

Right, just to confirm..
One song per 'team'
So you can enter as a solo artist but if you want to enter another song it will need to be as part of a collaboration. You can collaborate more than once with different people each time.
The reason for this is that we want to encourage new partnerships and also, if there is no limit we leave ourselves open to someone potentially entering loads of songs and filling the album up.
@dutchbeat. The collaboration pairings are not compulsory, if you want to naturally pair up that's fine, we thought the random pairings would help with growing the community and would throw up some interesting results.
As for the deadline for putting your name down, there is no deadline as such, it'd be nice to get the pairings sorted soon though, I'll talk to Michael and get back to you.
Please, if anyone else wants to join in the random collabs, please say now so we can get a list together and pair you up.

Ok Guys and Girls, I've a simple 'technical' question to you fellow collabs.
I'm running Sonar X1 in UK and CrazySusie is on Garageband in Canada. Sonar can export Audio and import (WAV, MP3) midi and OMF files. So how have you collaborated together in terms of recording and production when you're not in the same studio? Any hints and tips much appreciated.

i all the collabs i have worked with separate wav tracks, they can be imported in the various systems, and if you tell each other the BPM, and put the BPM on that number before importing, it just seems to work fine.....
Bin works with a 8 track hard disc recorder, sends me the separate wav tracks and tells the BPM and i can import it in Reaper without any problems

I've registered here just recently and stumbled over this competition thread. I don't usually write "summery" music, but I've once written a song (over 10 years ago) which might have some "summery" potential:

I've uploaded this old home-made demo recording and know it's sloppy and all, but back then I didn't intent this recording to be heard in public. It was a typical "work in progress" recording. The original lyrics are not summery, but maybe someone in here thinks that this song should have a go in this competition and wants to collaborate with me? Write some lyrics, record the music properly, sing ... ;)

No time to listen at the mo but yes, Shiny is right, post it in the finished songs board and include 'summer comp entry' in the thread title (alternatively you can (and probably should) post it as a separate subject in the competitions board) the trouble with this is that you'll get very few reviews..

Hey folks,
just a reminder for everyone who still wants to join, you have until Wednesday, July 31st to post your song :)
After that, we will all have some time (a week or so?) to listen to all the songs and then vote for our 3 favourite tracks.

I was thinking of calling it "Terry thinks I'm a happy soul." :)
Hopefully have it posted soon.

Hi Suzy, they actually would know when it was written as it has previously been posted on the forum. I was intending doing a remix of a previous track, purely because it has the word summer in the title ;D

Hi guys...this is probably one of the first songs that I ever wrote, so I know it's not that strong a song and the recording isn't that good, but I thought it was a perfect song for this comp. ;)...it's a song about my childhood memories...every summer my aunt would take care of my brothers and I while my parents went to UBC to finish their teaching degrees ...our home was in the middle of a forest so we had a lot of fun playing outside...I'm very fawned of these memories
The word zunga refers to a rope swing...the word originated in my small town and is now in the dictionary...we had one in our back yard and played on it for hours
I'm afraid life kept getting in the way of finishing recording this song for the summer comp., so I'm squeaking it in, in the last minute :)

This was a truly humbling thing to wake up to this morning.

You can send a PM with a link to an upload service like Dropbox, which is free and relatively easy to use :)
Michael... can we get some stats? How many voted, how badly i did, etc...
A total of 20 people voted. The system was that 3 'points' got allocated to each voter's favourite, 2 points to the 2nd favourite and 1 point for the 3rd favourite. The song with the most points wins.
I don't think it would be fair to publish all the results, someone is going to end up disappointed. I can PM you your personal results though if you really want to know.
The Bandcamp page will feature the 4 winning songs on top of the playlist with the 1st place being played 1st etc, however the rest of the songs will be put in random order, so the last song on the list is NOT neccessarily the one with the fewest votes.
