These are some lyrics I've written for a new event coming to our community centre later this month. (There are actually six verses in total, but I've left out two that only have local significance.) I've written a tune and chords as well and I'm hoping to have a band backing me on the opening night, which will be a new experience for me! There are a few inside references there but I'm sure you'll get the significance. I've sung it to the organizer and he really loves it, but I haven't performed it properly yet.
I don't have a title for it apart from "The Rec House Sessions Welcome Song". Would anyone like to suggest one?
When you're feeling blue and there's nothing to do,
There's a cure for your depression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can play the trombone or the saxophone,
Anything in your possession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
Come up to the mic and play what you like
In the first half, what the hell,
And if things go as planned there'll be a great band
In the second half as well.
So for anyone keen who wants to be seen
And to make a good impression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can play any style from Beatles to Weill,
It's all at your discretion,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can give us a song that's ever so long
Or short ones in succession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can book your own slot, 'cause we've got quite a lot
To be selected from.
It's as easy as this: send an email to Chris
At Lyncombe Court dot com.
You'll get no reply if you send it to Guy,
But pardon this digression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
As you're tapping your feet to the musical beat
It's almost an obsession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can bring your own booze, which is really good news
In the midst of this recession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
We start it at eight on a regular date,
Last Thursday of each month,
For example in May it's the twenty-fifth day,
And in August, thirty-oneth.
I was stuck for a rhyme so I cheated that time
If I may make one confession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
It's a wonderful sound as you're playing around,
It's a form of self-expression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
It wouldn't be right to get into a fight,
So abandon your aggression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
Although we're not signed, we're easy to find,
You won't have far to search,
You'll hear a great tune right beside the Full Moon
And near St Michael's Church.
From the Jam at the Ram, where they don't give a damn,
You've made the right progression,
So welcome to Twerton High Street
And our brand new Rec House Session!
