Ha  ;D ;D

Although not technically correct.

Us knob twiddlers for the most part dislike the push for volume.

It is more often the artists and/or management that want more, bigger, louder

 ;D  ;D  ;D  haha nice one

Who needs dynamics when you can get a mix that's louder than everyone else's ;)

cool this, just at the very moment i discovered maximizers and loudenizers (software)

but if we ALL would stop using that, i won't try it either

Ergo the problem.

Because some engineers push mixes louder and louder, those that don't get left behind. With seemingly "quiter" mixes and concerned clients.

Equally, it would be better if EVERYONE had decent headphones and speakers. Then when we master material, we wouldn't have to compromise to make it sound half decent on apple earbuds and the like.

But neither of those things are going to happen

Which is why I keep learning how to maximise volume WITHOUT sacrificing quality. As much as is viable. My rule of thumb: If I like the master more than the desk mix, I have done well. If not, the master is just louder: not better. Restart!

The loudness wars are over : the loudness won.

But its a thing of the past now. Its a thing that was a problem back in the early 00's and the days of 44.1/16

With 24 bit and 32 bit we can now go as loud as we like (well, in practice pretty much) without sacrificing too much dynamics.
Correct gain staging and you can get a dynamic and loud mix easily :)

Regardless of Bit rate there is always the issue of dark and light. Sure we can make everything louder. But people seem to forget to quiet sections, everything loud is no way to go. Ear fatigue is an issue even if clipping and such problems are now largely solved.

I have noticed that some big albums aren't pushing for it anymore. Perhaps the labels are ready to go for quality. And realise that we all have volume buttons/dials on our audio gear :)

I thought the gun would be pointed at the mastering engineer, rather than the producer!

Ha!  That's great!  I'm printing that one out and hanging it in the studio.
