A bit of slapstick fun from me! Well at least I hope it will be taken that way. And as a look at how what we find funny has changed over the years.
Here I take on the personage of one Mr Punch and imagined his dissatisfaction with a more PC world he now finds himself in. But he is Mr Punch, so he is occasionally brutal. I can't really change that, that's how the script goes! ;)
So... here's hoping all will be well!

Lyrics:
Punch & Judy Show
I'm the famous Punchinello
Living legend of the stage
Still handy with my slapstick
Well you'd never guess my age
Still wed to dearest Judy
Though the spark is almost dead
Now she's a modern woman
I can't smack her round the head
I'm the famous Punchinello
But I'm told there's no excuse
Nowadays for animal cruelty
Or mild domestic abuse
They sent me off to therapy
Now that box I can tick
I listened to my counsellor
Then hit him with a stick
Please forgive me
I'm not very PC
Please forgive me
It used to be funny
To batter your missus
It was the way to go
And everybody laughed
At the Punch and Judy show
I'm the famous Punchinello
What do Social Workers know?
They say I cannot throw the baby
Out of the window
Nor can I bash the crocodile
Its status is protected
My puppeteer wears rubber gloves
And got me disinfected
Rpt Chorus
Drop the baby
Whack the dog
Just like the old days
Mr Punch was a God
Crack Judy on the nod
Who stole the string of sausages?
The no fat, vegan sausages
Who stole the string of sausages
The dog, the dog, the vegan dog
Rpt Chorus
Everybody laughed
Ha ha ha ha ha
The end

Excellent song my friend ;D . Great idea, great lyrics, great delivery......should be on Loose Ends ;D ;D
Don't write 'em like this anymore. Well....not much, anyway ;D ;D . Reminded me of 'The Laughing Policeman'

Yo Michael.
The lyrics made me laugh and the carousel type music complimented the track very well.
I could imagine a really durty version sang by Kevin Bloody Wilson, but no doubt that's just me. :D
Cleverly done. 8)

That's the way to do it @MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274) ;D ;D
Very good but VERY Un PC ;D
The backing was absolutely perfect for the lyrics. It's a cracking little song which made me chuckle.
Vegan sausages indeed. They're always sold out at Greggs. Do they actually exist.
Great fun Michael :D
-
What madness is this??
Haha - loved every plunky bit of it.
So mad, so non-PC - so funny!
Right up my street ;D
Gotta play it for the better half - whose name happens to be.. Judy ;D ;D

this is fun
to the Point
and really well executed.
I'm Living in Germany
there's Always a dire shortage of humour here
PCness is thriving (hey, not "pussy Control" but political correct)
my young daughter recently had a Problem with me assuming that a woman was a woman because she looked like one -
Child's not daft, she's just coming to Terms with the PC Climate.
Good Work!!

Another quirky masterpiece @MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274) ! Don’t know how you do it! Love the vocal delivery particularly the rather (quirkily) unusual phrasing in parts! The musical style suits it perfectly. The BVs are great!!
Fab (again!!!).

Thanks for all these encouraging comments guys!
@Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) , thanks and you've got me thinking about 'Loose Ends' and the like. Well I won't be on Radio 1 or 2 anytime soon so maybe you have hit on a marketing idea for me! Cheers! ;D
Thanks @nooms (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=11264) , somebody else compared me to John Otway last year, and I have been enjoying looking up his stuff of late. He's definitely a presence Live! Cool!
Yo back at ya @Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061)! Glad you liked it, and yes Mr Wilson could no doubt corrupt my delicate artistry. Maybe I should send it to him! ;D
Hi @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) glad you had fun on the listen. Linda McCartney's vegan sausages are two quid at Sansbury's. Let me know if you try them! You first! ;)
Oh cool @Paulski (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19241) , a real life Judy! I'm not sure your wife will be too impressed by the lyrics of the song though as Judy's do not come out too well! Thanks for the thumbs up!
Hi @Rightly (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20219), interesting about Germany. Living just outside Liverpool, as I do, we hear a lot of Jurgen Klopp round here, who does seem quite funny, so sad to hear they are mainly miserable over there! Good luck with the daughter communication...I only have boys to deal with, which is probably simpler! ;)
Hi @MonnoDB (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19820)! Thanks Karen, I will certainly settle for 'quirky masterpiece'! But I have done maybe too many quirky songs of late, and seem to have lost the knack of doing anything more serious that is even half good! Never mind, subtlety isn't everything, don't you know! ;) Long live Quirky!

It hadn't even occurred to me how un-pc Punch is!!
-
I'm sure Mr Punch was covering up his own feelings of inadequacy and inferiority with the use of violence :P
A pretty cool bit of fun to brighten up the morning.
-
Yep @dinnerwithgreedo (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6829) , when that thought occurred to me that's when the germ of a song was born! 8)
@PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253), thanks. I had never really thought of Mr Punch as inadequate and inferior. You've got me almost feeling sorry for him now, poor misunderstood soul. Thanks for the listen. ;)
-
Had to look up the Punch and Judy show :-[ Not well known here in Canada ::) This is seriously clever and very funny in an unsettling
kind of way :o The circus style music is perfect for the subject matter and it really did make me laugh ;D Total slapstick!
Love your vocals and the production is brilliant 8) time to take ourselves a little less seriously ;D ;D
-
Excellent song Michael. Love the irreverence here going against the flow of all the virtue signalling which is all the rage these days! The melodies are insanely catchy. Would like to know what the backing instruments are. Some kind of synth? This would also work well as a full tilt punk rock number. Would sound great live turned up to number 11
-
Wow! Bud thet was fantastic !!! ..one of my favourate songs posted on here!!
-
Hi @crystalsuzy (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18947)! Thanks for this, but I never really thought that Punch & Judy might not be famous all around the world! That'll teach me, but glad you looked it up! ;) Glas you enjoyed it too.
Thanks @mickyplankton (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20769), nice one. All the instruments are done on synth. I recorded this one just on my ipad and some of the synths are simply tweaked defaults within Garageband. On top of this I used a synth app called Synthmaster Player. I have to admit I am pretty basic on the recording and production front!
Cheers for that appreciation too @macker71165 (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20758)
-
Love it. Just funny enough and just serious enough. A little Peter Gabriel in the vocal I'd say too.
Great song, brilliantly realised. Again. Marvelous stuff.
-
Hi thanks Adam @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) , that's very kind of you. I wish I could really sing like Peter Gabriel though. But I am quite OK with flattery too! ;D ;D ;D Ta very much!
-
Yeah that was cool, a warped fairground ride of a song. Clever clever observational lyrics, very well executed and grin inducing. It is weird (and funny) how violent childrens entertainment can be, eh? And nursery rhymes too. I mean, take "3 Blind Mice". They're already blind... and then they get their tails cut off! And the "rock-a-bye-baby" falls out the tree to almost certain doom. Horrific... no wonder we all grow up traumatised. :o
Bravo on a great track.
-
Oh, poor old Mr Punch, such an outsider in the modern world ;D
I loved this, it's great fun from start to finish and the lyrics are great. I laughed out loud at the "I can't smack her round the head" line. Really nice production that suits the song - all very well put together. Luvvly.
-
Thanks for that @PaulyX (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21034). I think you are onto a whole new song topic there, ie the darkness in nursery rhymes too! I think it's all good preparation for a tough world myself, but like Mr Punch I am probably a dinosaur! ;)
Cheers also @MartynRich (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20533), some of the best songs, books and movies are about outsiders after all, so maybe explains why Mr Punch still gets by!

Wow,
What a witty, clever and funny song. Brilliant musical setting and arrangement. Great subject and some lovely lines/rhymes. Loved the way you managed to rhyme crocodile disinfected. Original and full of wonder.
