Greetings everyone. Had the idea for this one in my head for some time,
but never got around to it. About four days ago i decided to knuckle down
and get it done, so here it is. I don't know if anyone has come up with
something similar before me, but if that's the case, no theft was intended.
Civil War Letters
My Dear,
I hope this letter finds you well
It's been a while since last i heard from you
They say, the mail was stalled in Memphis
Only now has it been getting through
Since i wrote you last we've been in battle
"Magnolia Hills" a glorious victory won
And though good men were falling all around me
The Lord saw fit to spare your darling John
All day long those southern boys denied us
Not till nightfall did they finally yield
The flower that i send you with this letter
Was plucked like courage from the battlefield
Now our boots are on the road to Vicksburg
Marching neath the tattered stars and bars
Before these words i write will ever reach you
The flag above that city will be ours
God is on our side so don't be anxious
Don't fear for me, don't you worry none
I'll hold you in my arms when it's all over
Forever Yours
Your loving husband
John.
My Love,
When i received your letter
I felt the eyes of God had looked my way
And answered all the prayers that i'd been sending
I feared the worst with every passing day
Knowing that you're safe my soul is lifted
As one upon some dark and stormy night
When the heavy clouds have finally shifted
And the solitary Moon reveals it's light
I miss those mornings waking up beside you
That farewell kiss now seems so long ago
It's hard knowing the shells burst all around you
While here the peaceful springtime waters flow
In the streets the flags are proudly waving
In every church the hopeful candle's burn
"Old red" sits for hours by the roadside
Waiting for his master to return
The love i have for you will never falter
You and i together are one breath
May the grace of God continue to protect you
Forever in my thoughts
Your darling
Beth.
Dear Madam,
It pains me to inform you
While engaged in battle in this awful war
Your brave and noble husband in his duty
Received a fatal wound and is no more
If there's any consolation at this hour
No suffering was felt at his demise
His passing was both dignified and peaceful
When the fire was extinguished in his eyes
Your captain was a man with great compassion
For his own men and the enemy
One day i heard him say "Despite the difference
Johnny Reb sure looks a lot like me"
His one request if he should fall in battle
Was to send his body home to you somehow
Rest assured, i will fulfill that obligation
As soon as circumstances here allow
Enclosed, are the letters that you wrote him
And the band of gold that proudly bears your name
May god give you the strength to come through this
His friend
Lieutenant-Colonel
Henry Kane.
