No melody yet. Just trying to sharpen narrative and tone. All notes welcome.

UNPAID

Verse I:
Rainy Saturday afternoon LA style noir
last time I saw you was right front seat, my car
side street outside a ones and zeros bar
to pick up, revise, rephrase our never healing scar

CHORUS:
We call'em complications
but they're just lies for saving faces
when we're too afraid to own
the parts we can't escape
I waved to you goodbye
on far too many planes
said I'd catch you on the next one
My penance left unpaid.

Verse II:
Your dancer's lithe against my flutter-heart
New gig across the moon, fencing us apart
Stopped by to make my day just as skies go dark
and swear to call me soon, less promise than remark

CHORUS:
We call'em complications
but they're just lies for saving faces
we're too afraid to own
the parts we can't escape
I waved to you, goodbye
on far too many planes
said I'd catch you on the next one
My penance left unpaid.

Bridge:
I wish you could have seen me turn that corner,
turn the shot glass under, turning my life over
just as I reached out for you, tried to pull you closer
you stepped beyond time and space...

Verse III:
Retracing steps I'd just as soon let wash away
It was a messy slog through half-remembered names
etch-a-sketched ramblings on a graceless rainy day
but love was piercing, clarion as you left the stage

CHORUS:
We called them complications
they were our lies for saving face
when we were too afraid to own
the parts we couldn't escape
I waved to you, goodbye
on far too many planes
Said I'd catch you next time
My penance left unpaid.

CHORUS II
We call on complications
but they're just balms on empty spaces
when we're feeling all alone
trying to find that bit of grace
You're waving, "See ya later"
I can feel you on this plane
And you'll catch me on the other side?
Marked it. Penance done and paid.
