Title: Love In The Cold
Post by: PeeJay on June 19, 2015, 10:02:24 PM
Love In The Cold:

New York Winter '82
That first apartment me and you
Signed the lease as the Hudson froze
Central Park hid away in snow

Top-floor windows were thick with ice
Radiators more leaks than pipes
Just two weeks later we'd lost all heat
And Brooklyn landlords were hard to reach

(Ch)
But we had love in the cold
Yeah we'd have and we'd hold
Couldn't prise us apart
It was Spring in our hearts
Making love in the cold

We dreamt of flames in an open hearth
Watching soaps in our coats and scarves
Friends and family trudged along
Stamped and shivered then soon were gone

Waved them off and then bedward bound
Two was company - more a crowd
Newlyweds seeking paradise
At minus plenty in fahrenheit

(Ch)
But we had love in the cold
Yeah we'd have and we'd hold
Couldn't prise us apart
It was Spring in our hearts
Making love in the cold

(Br)
We'd lie beneath a pile of blankets
Making plans for warmer days
Pushing strollers at Coney Island
Seemed another world away

(Ch)
But we had love in the cold
Yeah we'd have and we'd hold
Couldn't prise us apart
It was Spring in our hearts
Making love in the cold

Love in the cold
We'd have and we'd hold
Making love in the cold.....

Y LOVE this lyric. What a story brilliantly told! Its so good I'm guessing its autobiographical. Great imagery with Central Park hid in the snow and the Hudson river frozen over - closed my eyes for a moment and could actually see it like in the Xmas films. I loved the line about the radiator having more leaks than pipes - very inventive and well crafted. Love the line about trying to find paradise at minus fifty Fahrenheit- again well crafted and original. For me the absolute clinker is the line 'it was spring in our hearts making love in the cold'. Sums u the whole narrative of the lyric perfetcly.

Genre wise I'm curios what you have in mind. I get a bit of a Paul Simon vibe from the lyric but I think it culd go down several routes - country, singer-songwriter, blues.

Loved every line of this so kudos :)

Nice job Peejay.  This sang easily and with a reasonable amount of drama on first read.  Reminds me of a line in "Key Largo" by Bertie Higgins.

"Wrapped around each other.
Tryin so hard to keep warm.
That first cold winter together
Lying in each other's arms."

Your lyric has that kind of vibe.  Very nice.

      Hi Peejay,
You painted the picture so well, i was reaching for a blanket myself. Nicely done, and the paradise/fahrenheit coupling was surprising and effective, not seen that one before. Good stuff.

Hey PeeJay

Nice lyric here - a bit out of season atm though  ;D
Couple of suggs -
- never would hit -50F in NY - maybe -15F would work unless you wanted to exaggerate
- and think I would say "landlords are hard to reach"

Can see this in a Christmas movie  ;D

Nice work
Paul

Hi Sing4me, Verlon, Vintage and Paul,

Thanks for reading and commenting.

No, this isn't autobiographical. I'm from the valleys boyo! I've exhausted my knowledge of the Big Apple in this.

And i always thought celcius was doubled and add 26 or something to get the fahrenheit equivalent. Seems it doesn't work in the negative. Why do they do these things!

Cheers,

Phil.

All the more impressive as you've managed to concoct one hell of a love story here. It had all the minor details and all that wonderful imagery and really personalised narrative running through it that I felt it was a sure bet that this was an older Peejay reminiscing on younger married life in the Big Apple before returning home again many years later.

Dear Phil, aka imaginary well-travelled valley boy. Nice story and great feel to it. Loved the bridge.
Got a Paul Simon written all over it to me.

that's unique, with unique imagery, rhymes...some triple, some masculine etc..and folk can relate to the story...

This really is top notch PeeJay...

Fantastic story evoking all kinds of images. I've never had the pleasure of visiting the Big Apple, but I feel like I've been there now.

Probably my favourite group of all time is 'The Beautiful South' and these lyrics could have been written by the great man himself, Paul Heaton.

Not sure what musical style you're aiming for but I hope it matches the brilliance of the lyrics.

Hi Arkwright,

Thanks for that.

I like Beautiful South although I'm not in the same league!

Great lyrics and I like how you have managed to fool a few people into believing its autobiographical.
That means you have done what we all try to do and you created great imagary and sucked people into it. Thats how I feel songs should be. lose yourself in another world.
Well done mate.
