A little avant garde noise from me, so beware. Inspired by The Beatles Revolution 9 and the end of I Don't Live Today by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. All comments gratefully received.

that is realy avant garde &  wild keith...actually I do a lot of stuff like this but I call it jazz!  ;D

with all the backwards voices & snippets of sounds & strange music it was like a collage so it was a fitting  accompaniment to the container thing covered in graffiti ...is that one of those installation things thats modern art? ...i saw the police cars everywhere & thought wow it mustve been such a popular attraction there was a riot with people fighting to see it

Tell me Im wonderful & I ll be nice to you :)

Thanks Tina,

not sure I would class it as jazz.

Yes it's modern art. Jimmy Caute built a model town in Bedfordshire in the aftermath of a riot and put it in a container. The container has spy holes so you can see the buildings, police etc. The container is currently touring famous riot sites in the UK. After Hull it went to Newcastle Upon Tyne. Well worth a visit if you get the opportunity.

Thanks again,

Keith

Hi Keith

Strangely ive been looking forward for a while now to hearing something from you, can you explain more, the male voice is that you and who else is talking and your reasons for putting this together and of cause what ever else, maybe sometime in the future we can record something together, would like that.

Nice one.

This is a really interesting piece of conceptual music Keith which I thought suited the film perfectly. I hadn't heard of this project before and will be finding out more about it. Like the sound collage with the repetitive #3 #3 and the backwards guitars and voice snippets. Good to see some more avant garde stuff on the forum.

Cheers

Thanks John. Here's some more information about the AdpRiotTour and where its going next.

http://www.l-13.org/acatalog/JIMMY-CAUTY-ADP-RIOT-TOUR-.html

Tina, I know what you mean but not all avant garde noise is jazz and not all jazz is avante garde noise. Two jazz singers you may want to check out, if you've not come across them already, are Bessie Smith and Billie Holliday.

Last but not least, Oldbutyet. The voices are me and my wife. With what is essentially a drone you need the mix of voices (including the instruments) to add a bit more interest.

The inspiration was The Beatles Revolution 9 which caught me as a teenager. Running around classrooms saying "Number 9" cracked us up. The wonder of that track never left as I got older. The same can be said for Hendrix's I Don't Live Today, especially the end. Add in the feedback drenched introduction to Wild Thing at Monterey, The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock and Miles Davis' electric period and you're cooking.

The more immediate inspiration was Jimmy Cauty's work of art and the pipeline protest at Standing Rock. Mix it altogether and you get 6 minutes of noise.

My musical skills lag behind what I have in my head. Revolution 3 sounds way too melodic to my ears but that's all my fingers could manage on the fret board. Which means I usually work fairly slowly.

I'm definitely interested with working with you. Send me a pm if you have something on the go I could help with.

Thanks to all of you for the positive comments, much appreciated.

I appreciate the idea, but this isn't nearly as trippy as the one the beatles made, and I the song idea only works once. Rev #9 is a unique and odd art project, and it is novel in it's uniqueness and originality. You brought something new to the table, but not enough for it to exist on its own. I don't think this is jazz though, I see freejazz with the likes of Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy, this is something different. But it's all subjective.
Interesting project you got here, not my cup of tea, but it's probably someone's!
Keep going
Nate

This is one of those pieces of music that at the right moment would be just perfect - I recall listening to lots of weird stuff driving home at night on The Late Junction. I'd then buy an album and be puzzled why in the cold daylight whilst sitting on my sofa it didn't have the same effect as it did when I was transfixed by darkness and headlights.

This is like that. I can't say it's my thing, and it's not the right moment, but I'm glad folks do this stuff and push the envelope.

Cheers

Very interesting.

I can equate this with Revloution #9.

Having the video gives the piece an interpretation, which I otherwise would not see..

I do like the guitars, they set an ambience, which gives the tune some depth and a kind of haunting feeling.

Enjoyable listen.

That is one hypnotically, weird and long piece of music...right up my street. I loved the ambience all the way through. At first I did think, oh god it´s 6 minutes long, but it held my attention. It´s more something you´d have in the background while eating certain types of specialised fungi...but there´s music for every social situation.

It´s really well put together, with a great mix of sounds...I especially liked the trumpet at the end as it grew out of the mix. All in all, a great piece of work!

Hello Keith,

This is interesting to me, I remember revolution number 9, so I can relate to this. This is though video art, with the video collage and sound snippets telling the story, with your musical piece as the backdrop.

It feels like a working class lament, not as optimistic as some of your work. But as I say I can relate I lived through it.

Thanks for the responses, positive as well as negative. I must admit the favourable responses have taken me by surprise a little, so thanks for cheering me up.

Nate, whilst I really like Revolution 9 I wouldn't call it trippy and there are far better examples of what they were trying to achieve if you look hard enough.

I'm tempted to produce some more weird noise, so be warned.

Thanks again,

Keith
