Whilst writing the latest western I started pondering on what might have happened to Jesse James's possessions and came up with this one. As ever with me, it's a really simple melody, a basic arrangement, and one take.

She told me she had a boy’s name, when I asked her what she said “Jesse… James
“Named after my great grand-pa, who never took no for an answer
“He roamed these lands near and far, see him still in the midnight stars”
Blue eyes, setting sun
Mountain time, and the mustangs run
Towards her.
Because they know.
“I’ve still got his silver spurs, they’re still shining despite the years
“I wore them once on my old girl, you’d have thought she could have run the whole wide world
“Cousin Jake’s still got his gun, and a love letter from 1861
“I read it once in the evening sun, had a moonshine dream that I was the one"
Blue eyes, setting sun
Mountain time, and the mustangs run
Towards her.
Because they know.
“Folks round here say I’ve got his eyes, when the sun is low it’s like he’s still alive”
“They’re holding onto something and it’s no surprise, in the mission hall his coat still hangs high
“There’s blood in the earth and there’s blood in our veins, blood on the tracks, and blood in the rain
“We breathe the same air over again, Jesus Christ and Jesse James”
Blue eyes, setting sun
Mountain time, and the mustangs run
Towards her.
Because they know.
