Title: Moving North/Gigantic
Post by: Pez on September 23, 2012, 09:34:20 PM
Hia, been a while, I've moved house, been offnet for a while as a result and just got round to setting up a mic and recording this, which I wrote premove, about moving....

When I came to record I realised how similar the chords sounded to the Pixies song, Gigantic. So I incorporated it in at the end... hope you like :-* :-* :-* any comments appreciated!

words:

thinking of moving north,
but i hate the cold,
thinking of stopping south,
but i hate bein on my own...

where will i find myself i want to set down roots,
i wanna take the right road baby that unanimously suits,
us all

i wanna get it right
i dont want you and me to fight
and i been here most my life
but i still feel the need to go home

i could cry myself to sleep at night
the turmoil turns my insides
and for my kids sake
i try to hide the heartache

where will i find myself i want to set down roots,
i wanna take the right road baby that unanimously suits,
us all

so i guess i'm hopin that it all works out
and it'll all be alright in the end
we'll have a nice house
and our family will be our new friends

my job it wont be quite so dead end
might pay enough to not overspend
i'll try to get fit
and stop wallowing in my pit

in my
in my
in my hole

in my
in my
in my hole
i dont know where to go....

and this i know, her teeth as white as snow
what a gas it was to see her,
walked her every day into a shady place
with her lips she said

she said hey polly polly polly lets have a ball
hey polly polly polly lets have ball
gigantic, gigantic, gigantic, a big big love
gigantic, gigantic, gigantic, a big big love

I love the sound you get Pez, like a proper band recording.

This has bags of attitude and is really well done.

Keep up the good work mate ;D

thanks a lot Jim, I'm only just getting into playing guitar solo's, its new territory, as is the bass and drums to be honest!! Gonna be even harder to play the drums in this new place i'm in... very sleepy little cul de sac. Think they might call the police if i go all keith moon on them  ;D
Thanks a lot for the comments people :)

People, stop breaking the forum with long links or large pictures!!! Poor tone...his pride and joy all fat and bloated ;)

Heehhehehe

Anyway, the song

Very raw. Gritty garage rock. This isn't my genre so I can't comment too much I am afraid. It has all the right energy and determination to be rough and "anti-music". Lots of swagger and 'tude. The vocal is impassioned and raw, lots of thought gone into the arrangement clearly :)

Is the messy ending part of the style? I assume so...

sorry bout the big drums ;D

yeah the end bit i just left on there.. i quite like it!  never set out to make anti music as such, i just play what i'm able to and what gives me a good vibe. I'm not the most skilled guitarist or drummer or singer but i get really into it haha

pumping big sound, great snarl to the vocal, clash like
not keen on the sound of the snare, kick drums fine but the snares metalmushy ?? hit some oil drums if you got any lying around the new house !
tracks really alive though, nice bass...love the solo just going for it
gets better and better, loved what i thought was the ending..
think you should lose the manic bass outro..kind of unnecessary
but great track

hey nooms, hope alls good with you. Thanks a lot for the comments :) I agree with you on the ending in retrospect...doesnt need to drag on the way it does... glad you commented on the snare.. i think it needs tightening up and i probably mixed it wrong too. I used loads more compression than i usually do on the master and i think its resulted in a fuller sound. Cheers I'll check for yours soon

It's great that band practicing in a room sound. It has a great energy and you have a really distinctive vocal which I like a lot. It's always a pleasure listening to the energy of your stuff and this is no exception.  :)
With Nooms on the ending but apart from that, very nice work again. ;D
A meatier bass sound (If it's possible for you to get it) would really thicken out the energy of this track, I thought.
Really cool vibe you've got.

Rock n roll , bordering on punk , takes me back to 76 when i was a youngster .......

enjoyed the song , i think you're a pretty good singer  ,
the sound was a bit on the tinny side , but thats just personal taste i suppose.
i liked the ending  ;D

The quality of the track really shines through the "raw" (in a good way) production

I could really here this with a more mainstream production, harmonies etc.

Although I guess that kinda defeats the object of the genre

I would tame the guitar solo a little to "fit" in to the same space as the track - a little less level and a bit of reverb

Loved the attitude of the track though and I thought the vocal performance was particularly strong

Hi Pez,

I like that the track smacks you in the face; This is me... this is what I like... this is how I do it. How music should be done, whatever genre you prefer. I like this kind of music so it suited me just fine. Raw energy.
I liked the snare to be honest, thought it cut through. Perhaps you could go for a tighter sound to it; Maybe Joy Division type sound - don't know if it would work.
Liked the bit of fuzz. Really good vocal.
Ending? Album outro!

Cheers,

Digger

Amazing energy, and the whole thing's got a nice tight sound. And the guitar solo put a big smile on my face. Great stuff - cheers for sharing!

Nodding my head along to this, the bass is very cool. I could easily imagine hearing this on 6 music or the like.

Great stuff Mr Pez

I dug this. I don't know why you added the Pixies at the end though, the chords had a passing resemblence to Gigantic, it would have been much better if you'd finished it on your own steam!

Great work though.

this sounds like real primitive rock n roll & it sounds great ...that sound makes me wish i had a proper drum kit
the guitar solo might not have been technicaly great but it had all the right attitude
i dont understand why you went into the pixies gigantic i thought your song sounded original id never have felt the connection

thanks for the comment Tinam.

Not really up for the comp though, I'm not a big fan of James Bond so would struggle to use it as inspiration! Thanks anyway ;D
