Writing this was fun
The music is coming along

Jesus loves you

Jesus loves you, God's only son
ev'rybody else thinks you're a cunt
say what y'will, do what y'must do
Jesus forgives, somebody has to

bigger than Elvis, it's true what they say
off for the weekend, back on Sunday
he died for our sins, the kids made a fuss
and so it begins, if that's not enough

Jesus loves you,
       somebody has to

heavily burdened, going down slow
wholly uncertain, fire and brimstone
eternally damned, better believe it
it's out of your hands, repent, release it

oh, the rising damp, 'church needs a new roof
th' basement is rank, th' pidgeons won't roost
'not just th' money, your body and blood
children are useless, your soul if you would

Jesus loves you,
      somebody has to

days of empire, with unquenchable thirst
lived by the sword, killed by the word
Jesus loves you,
        somebody has to

....    rightly
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

Don't eat the yellow snow

And there you have it.

This is interesting.. I have a complicated relationship with the “c” word…

In Ireland, there are places were it is widely used and not seen as “extreme” and many of my friends including my husband come from one of these places. So I am used to them using it frequently and without causing offence.  I expect that this is the case for other parts of the English-speaking world too.

However I grew up somewhere where this wasn’t the case so it was always seem as a fairly hardcore, extreme curse word.

I also think it's something to do with the very hard "c" sound - in the same way that "cock" sounds much harsher than "prick" (for example).

I have two daughters - both in their late teens and their circle of friends frequently use it and don’t take offence at its use. They’ve kind of claimed it in an empowering way.

Having said that, in my home, it’s not acceptable in general use / conversation but at the same time I don’t have a problem with it.  We Irish curse A LOT!

So I think if you’re bothered to review a lyric, it’s logical to me that you might  object to the use of the c-word but why on earth would you not just make that point and review the lyric? Or say nothing? Not post at all? To write off a whole lyric because of the use of one word seems bizarre to me..

So… to the lyric - I’m intrigued.. I don’t understand it fully but then I never do with your lyrics and that’s why I like them so much.

Looking forward to hearing the song..

K

Bingo! 😃

@Elvis Nash
Yes, the thought did occur to me. 😃

I think the Christians, collectively, are guilty of more than a one syllable word of profanity.
I don't expect a slump in record sales. Tbh.
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

one syllable word of profanity. no doubt Rightly They get pissed off like everyone else  . But in the Christian market genre they usually don't use profanity in lyrics . Praise the lord and all that .

K, thanks for your thoughts.

I like the word. It has lot of meanings.
And needs context.
Small doses of profanity can be fun
But I'll not stand for excessive use.
Yes, phonetically it's strong.

Those offended at the use of the word will comment
In order to signal that they've a higher moral standard. Bless 'em.

With my lyrics
Im intentionally ambiguous with lyrics
Songs are always dialogues
I think
A song that aspires to explain everything comes across as patronising
The listener will either brush it off or stop listening.

Thanks for your patience with me.

With this song I've 2 versions I'm putting together.
The 1st is in 5/4 time, ive been struggling with that
Had a recent break through  though.
Early on I switched to 3/4 time and that's simpler for me and more fun.
I'm making fast progress with this second version.

Placed on an album, I hope it'll serve as comic relief
And in turn  this will free me up for more melancholy.

Thanks for your feedback  😀

I know, elvis
I've heard some hilarious Christian song lyrics.

Make me an instrument of your love 🎶
He's the way, the truth,  the light 🎶   (sounded like, he's the waifer, chew, delight)

I've met a lot of people who've been harmed in the name of J. C.
I was raised a Catholic. Its not all bad, just most of it.

Interesting thread an firstly I just wanted to say that I’m not offended in any way whatsoever. A few weeks ago we had a guy at our open mic, a poet, he had never performed in public before and had started writing during lockdown which I think was very difficult for him. He was in the style of John Cooper Clarke and his poetry had a liberal dosing of F and C words. One person objected strongly to his work but the rest of the audience gave him a standing ovation. I shook his hand and said to him that it was so brilliant that a) he had written that stuff and b) most importantly he had finally plucked up the courage to perform it. It was a huge deal for him and he was shaking after his performance. That’s art. It would be a sorry, sorry world if we couldn’t say what we thought

I write a lot of religious songs , Its a staple in country music . there's some killer Jesus songs . Whatever a writer wants to say is fine with me . Major Christian songs stray away from profanity. but they're devout Christians . Back to your song , I was kinda thinking this hook had to be been done , and it has. Just for the sake of competition. You would have to beat her song.

😆
Well done to whoever wrote that!
That hook, the sentiment, it is indeed a fruit of the same tree.

It's very country, with the prominent slide.

It turns me off a bit. Nashville skyline, the album by Bobby D, uses it a lot.
I didn't like the slide as a kid when I first heard it.
Great album of songs, it won me over in the end.

Typical English productions rarely, if ever, apply that slide.
It took me ages to accept David Byrne was/is American because of his heady self restraint.
The English songwriters are culturally a different animal.
The Americans more smash n grab. This doesn't mean I don't think they're great.
Dylan, Prince, Reed, and Neil young are usually in my top 5 songwriters.

(Prince did that song "rock n roll love affair" and "when you were mine" and others, quite country I think)

It's both impossible and easy to compete with a breathy, introspective beautiful woman.
Sort of cheap n yet hard to resist at the same time.
Aside from that, the production on this track is full of all the tricks that are to be expected.
Chunky memorable chorus too.

Songwriting here is of course top notch
It does make me want to add more to my own track.

Interesting. Thanks for posting that. @Elvis Nash

I also want to add here

These song lyrics of mine, on this particular post
... Are not that good.
The song is meant to be comic relief, a bit of light fun,
to counter the more melancholy songs on the album.

It's difficult for me and most others to evaluate the quality of a song
based only on the lyrics.
Better song lyrics are ignored
But that one four letter word is enough to spark a debate
Funny, isnt it?
And that's why I don't want to replace it with "runt" or "beeepp..."
I've often posted much better song lyrics
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

Well either version , its quiet clever , Jesus loves you but i don't . Amazon has t-shirts with the phrase .

https://bit.ly/3w4E4Ns

Nashville hugs the bible belt on every song , or big % of them . "Gospel Country " mostly Baptists I think . I haven't been there in a long while

That might be funny to wear
