This is a bit of silliness that I wrote for a recent open mic session.  Since it's about songwriting, I thought I'd share the lyrics here.

Writers have a rotten time with
One annoying little word,
For it's one few others rhyme with,
Most of which sound quite absurd.
Americans can sing about
"The one I'm dreaming of",
But we poor Brits have hit the pits
With silly rhymes for love.

Listen guv,
What rhymes with love?
Hey there bruv,
What rhymes with love?
So many times I've looked for inspiration from above,
But every time I've had to give the whole idea the shove.
My old muvver,
Don't you just love 'er?
You'll soon discover
The only bird's a dove.
There aren't as many rhymes as there are fingers on a glove,
And that's why I've had enough
Of looking for rhymes for... luff.  And all that stuff!

Thanks!  I doubt whether I'm the first person to have had that idea but it was fun to write - I cooked it up in an afternoon when I realized I was short of material.

Actually I don't think "near" rhymes work in comedy (unless they're put in for deliberate effect) - if the rhyme doesn't work then the joke falls flat.  One of the many reasons why I think writing comedy lyrics is harder than writing other lyrics, which I think we've touched on before.
