One of the best things about my new Yamaha is the strings. They don't squeal every time you change chords! The guy at the shop didn't know what strings they were! I know they are 12s and they're round-wound but they feel smoother than the round-wound D'Addario strings on my other acoustic which squeals like mad.

The wound strings (E A D G) are silvery/yellow whereas the D'Addarios are more coppery coloured

Does anyone know what Yamaha might be fitting to new Compass series acoustics? I'd really like to get more of the same.

BTW - I've already figured the're probably Yamaha strings but just wondered if anyone knew for sure ;)

I religiously put Elixirs on my acoustics. Very quiet and great tone that lasts.

Got to back that one up !

Nanoweb elixirs are the bomb and last for about 6 months a time  ;D

Another vote for the nanowebs - best strings I've tried so far.

No, their not exactly cheap indeed, but well worth their money. They're covered with some magic substance that prevents any dirt/dust/sweat to get stuck in between the windings, which does a lot to maintain the "new strings sound" for quite a long time.

Just a heads-up: d'Addario has got coated strings as well, the EXP series. The bronze rate is 80/20.
They sound a little less bright than Elixirs IMO, I've had both before. But I like the tone very much, even more so than the very bright Elixirs.
Apparently, they've also got a different feel. Found this on a guitar forum: "It seems to me that Elixirs are wound then coated, but the D'Addarios are coated then wound, thus feel less coated and more natural." It never really struck me, but I find the d'Addario's very comfy to play with. (I've got 13's now, but their 12's are very good either as I recall).
And I do believe they are a bit cheaper...

But as always it depends on the sound and feel you want to get out of them, right?
I'd suggest you try them both out and take your pick :)

Oh yes, of course they've also got phospher bronze ones if you prefer. They sound a bit warmer, but are a bit pricier as well...

Hm, then maybe i shall try these ...

Not a fan of the phosphor ones, seems to me that the coating on these is a lot thicker and starts to come loose a bit after a couple of weeks... which not only ruins the tone, but also produces quite an unpleasant smell when played a lot.

Martin have their range of high quality 80/20 bronze strings aswell.

There is studio performance and studio performance lifespan which are the treated ones.

They have some other ranges as well with slightly different treatments ('marquis' I think is one, and there is the regular ones).

You can get them pretty cheap from Thomann...but buy in bulk as you have to pay 8 EUR shipping...
