Hello,

I'm currently trying to get together a little three song cover set for an open mic night.

The only song I have so far is "May You Never" by John Martyn - does anyone have any sugestions for two more songs that sit neatly onto an acoustic guitar?

Something thats intresting to learn and fun to play.

Thanks.

Anything by James Taylor usually works well - my personal fave: fire & rain

Pretty much anything by Paul Simon too - how about Homeward Bound or Slip Slidin Away or Train in the distance - all really great on acoustic.

Will there be a video of this performance?

hey

I was thinking of nick drake since you mentioned john martyn but you probably don't want to detune your guitar completely ;)

maybe this

it's a whole step down but it sounds great without detuning too

Can't go wrong with Beatles songs... Yesterday, Blackbird, Here Comes The Sun, Hey Jude, Two Of Us etc

Also some Pink Floyd songs translate well to acoustic... Wish You Were Here, Brain Damage and Us And Them work well

Hope this helped :)

Clapton did a number of acoustic arrangements of his songs. I'm quite partial to Layla played unplugged.

House of the Rising Sun is another song that springs to mind, and Hotel California (Neither are Clapton obviously ;) ).

Wonderwall ;) ?

Or there are some folk song classics like Wild Rover and Streets of London

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I don't think I have the means of recording the performance live, but I may record them at home a few days before and upload it to youtube - so keep an eye out for this thread being resurrected from the doldrums.

I'm having a listen through some of the suggestions at the moment - Eric Clapton suggestion threw up a Jimmy Hendrix acoustic version of "castle made of sand"

If anyone else has any suggestions still would love to hear them.

Good but my fave is "Sweet Baby James". Remarkably good.

Or pick one of the covers Johnny Cash made even more famous on his American recordings. A lot of good ones to choose from and sure as heck crowd pleasing.

Redemption song by Bob Marley and Waving Flag by K'nan might work. Both are incredible songs and both originals are quite stripped back with only vocals and guitar so should be easy enough to connect with. I'm also edging towards Jackson Brown 'Before the deluge' and Bob Dylan 'Masters of War'.

I have done a few acoustic sets and I would recommend something a little "different" to throw in to your set

Here are 4 versions that I have done that have gone down a storm...

Eric Clapton's version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"

&feature=kp

(I think I wrote out the chords once so give me a shout if you want them)

Biffy Clyro's "Live Lounge" Version of "Umbrella"

(This has even worked its way in to out main band set and ALWAYS goes down really well

Bon Jovi's re-interpretation of "Living On A Prayer" and "Its My Life" both work fantastically well acoustically:

Living On A Prayer

Its My Life

Or - take another well known song and do your own interpretation
