Now that I've discovered this, Husker Du were a 1980s punk band, but starting from 1985, new albums typically had material that resembled early 90s grunge stuff (take "Games" from their 1985 album).
There is also the odd other band that sounds a little like this from later in the 80s, but not that much (early Nirvana, Pixies). And Husker Du used virtually no artificial or digital equipment at this time (you need to wait until they became Sugar in the 90s).
Another slightly ahead album is the first Violent Femmes (1983) LP. I believe it's a little like some mid 90s Presidents of the United States material. Again, this had very little synth.
So 90s alternative stuff is probably more like 80s if you take away the synth, but most 80s music does have keyboard. As with 2010s.
