Hi John @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269)
I’m really hoping to get along for this too…fingers crossed 😀
-
Nice one Paul - I'll open up the call at 7pm anyway and see who drops in :)
-
Songwriter Zoom will be open from 7pm tomorrow evening (Friday) Pop in for a chat if you fancy it. Would be good to get some ideas on future initiatives following the very successful Key Challenge thanks to @Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22987) hard work 😀
-
I'll be there tomorrow John @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) to discuss the 'Back To Basics' Challenge. That is Drums, and 3 other instruments plus lead vocal and backing vocals. Modern synthesisers are not permitted. However you can use keys to play a more traditional instrument: flute, trumpet, piano, harmonica etc. We could discuss a list of permissable instruments. I suggest we use no more than 6 tracks, inclusive of vocals.
Example:
Drums
Bass
Guitar
Piano
Vocal
Backing vocal.
(1 track permitted for each of the above).
Substitute a traditional instrument of your choice for any of the above.
Titles:
The Man That You See
Visit The USA
I'll Take It From Here
Intuitive Technology
Maybe Not Today
There Are No Rules
Perhaps We Should Say
The Things We should Have Done
Introspective
The Last 50 Years
Living In Two Places
Her Alibi
Structure:
Intro
Verse
Chorus
Verse
Chorus
Solo
M8 (must not exceed 8 bars)
Chorus
Chorus.
Outro.
1) Your song should consist of:
Intro: use as many or only a few of your chosen instruments.
2) Verse 1: 2 instruments including drums if you wish
3) Chorus: 3 instruments including drums if you wish and
1 Backing vocal
4) Verse 2: 2 instruments and drums if you wish
5) Chorus: 3 instruments including drums if you wish and
2 Backing vocals
Solo (Drums, bass and a single instrument)
6) Middle 8: Drums, bass and a single instrument and main vocal
7) Finish with double chorus using as many of the 6
instruments as you wish
Finally, outro as above number 7
It will challenge us all to write to a brief and to maintain interest with a limited selection of instruments.
Hopefully we can discuss the above for the next challenge. No time limit like the key challenge. Entries are still invited for this. The idea is to maintain forum interest so feel free to post entries for any of the challenges, at any time as long as you declared an interest/took part in the draw.
Something to discuss tomorrow hopefully.

Morning all. I'd love to join this but the lad is back from University for the first time since we dropped him off in September so going to spend some quality time with him.
@Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22987) I think you need make it a condition that people have to stand on one leg whilst recording all instruments ;)
-
Great to see some energy going into these initiatives! Not sure I can cope with more than one challenge at a time but I'll try to drop in tonight for sure.
-
I don't mean to dictate what people should do. The challenges are open for members to freely take part or not. Whilst the instructions are detailed, it's quite a simple exercise to follow, That has never been my style. In fact, it would be much easier for me to do nothing but then it's unlikely that things wouldn't happen on this forum. This is really an exercise in writing to a brief. I'm happy to suggest challenges or not but it's all done in the interest of and for the long-term benefit of forum members.

@Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22987) - Thanks for the enthusiasm and direction, it's taken in the spirit intended, but I'm afraid I can't get inspired with so many rules, it's hard enough for me to write without restrictions...I suppose I don't work from a title backwards. I can do it with genres, because there's loads to aim at.
Hope you get a load of takers.
It's unlikely I can join the call for a month or so due to holidays and prior commitments.. but I will as soon as I can, I want to be part of it and contribute

Thanks Rich @cowparsleyman (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21308), It works for some and not others. I often watch the boards and think 'Man, it's hard work'. Oftentimes I'm tempted to sit back and not bother. I just want to reiterate that this isn't about me. I'm seriously just trying to make the forum more vibrant. That's done in many ways: from reviewing to good instruction as given by yourself and Zoom meetings as provided by John @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269). There is a lot of work that goes into preparing such posts. and it can seem it's for little return. Having said that, the latest challenge has been a huge success. I'm just trying to keep the ball rolling.

Again, sorry I was unable to attend the Zoom meeting. I'm down with a horrible cough/cold bug at the moment which has stripped my vocal chords and given me a thumping head. Hopefully I'll be there next time.
-
Love that you're doing this but Friday night is family time chez nous so it's unlikely I'll be able to join - but never say never! Great that you guys got together!!
