Err...
Here’s my summer competition entry.  It's been a weird week.

https://soundcloud.com/commodore-64/sharkattack

I set out to write a nice beach-set bouncy summer song, but before I knew it, I had a kind of ska-punk splatter movie on my hands.  Well, I couldn’t get that genie back in the bottle, so here it is.  It’s mercifully short, and I promise the upcoming competition collab will be more on-message with the summer thang.

This is a pure solo effort without the guys in the band who know how to EQ properly, hence a different Soundcloud account to normal and the fact that production quality has fallen off a cliff.  I know I’ve overcooked the chorus but I wanted to create a kind of “sweaty boozer, surrounded by a bunch of pogoing skinheads” atmosphere, so a bit of clipping and distortion felt the right thing to do.

Be careful in the water...

SHARKATTACK!

Summer’s here and so HR have planned an outing to the beach:
A special day for those of us whose targets were just out of reach.
I’m sitting on the minibus with Baz from Finance, we’re having a buzz.

We pull up and tumble into waters that look so beguiling.
They have booked a swim with dolphins as a break from all the filing.
At least we thought that they were dolphins until they started smiling, it’s a...

SHARK ATTACK!
SHARK ATTACK!
SHARK ATTACK!
Forget your swim with dolphins...

The water’s red and Baz is screaming as he sinks beneath the tide.
I’m swimming for dear life but I see there is no place to hide
And on the shore HR are clapping and all shouting “open wide”.

SHARK ATTACK!
SHARK ATTACK!
SHARK ATTACK!
Forget your swim with dolphins...

Clinging to some driftwood, it’s a fitting end to my career.
One last piece of schadenfreude, the boss falls laughing from the pier.
He makes a tasty morsel and now he’s in pieces, I’m in tears... it’s a...

SHARK ATTACK!
SHARK ATTACK!
SHARK ATTACK!
Forget your swim with dolphins...
It's all too beautiful.

Yo Paul.

Terrific two tone tune, makes me wanna dance.  8)

It's a banging meld of the Specials and Madness, yet with a cool original streak.

Loved it from start to finish.

Brilliant! You definitely sound like a Nutty Boy, I think if you were writing songs for Madness theyd still be having hits
So much to love here, from the crazy story, to the lead guitar riff & the squeaky backing vocals, & all the noises of you & Baz getting eaten...very tasty!
There is something so perfect to my ears in droll lyrics  bouncing along in a tight rhyme to a catchy melody!
Loved it!  :)
Tell me Im wonderful & I ll be nice to you :)

Hi PaulyX!

Well it was no summer attack but well worth the minutes.
Kind of musically mild to me for being violent. My guess is you
have a bit too much respect for your instruments and your
voice. But on the other hand ska is not hard core.

Fun to hear your doing a collaboration!

This is fab PaulyX. First thing is that the lyrics are engaging and fun. Combined with that ska beat and Kinks / Small faces vibe makes it an absolute winner for me. You've always got lots of clever stuff going on and each time I listen I get into it more. Love the sugarpuff ending. Inspired man  ;D

Yeah...excellent!

Strange seeing this one and it's subject matter as the last song I posted (same circus, different clown) was - in its early stage - going to be called "shark in a dolphin suit" but I had to abandon it...as I just couldn't get it together. You had no such problems  :)

Anyway...great up-beat bouncy sound and fun, clever lyrics once again...

Consistently top quality stuff from you...and a great competition entry  :)

Dare I call this controlled madness? Love how it sits on the edge of sanity, great storyline, tight writing, actually tight playing too, but with a kind of reckless attitude that's infectious.

On first listen I thought "that chorus is a bit simple". Now I think it is what is has to be.

OK, enough now, better get back to those targets...

Hey Pauly,

Haha bloody loved it. Sitting by the pool with a sea view I had to start the song over with the speaker rather than my headphones!

Perfect time to listen to these summer entries and I'm only worried you've set the bar too high for the rest.

Great hook and I love the line about the 'dolphin' starting to smile.

All the best,
Scott.

Great fun,

I think I've said before I'm not a huge punk fan but I do quite like you melodic punk, ska mashup style.

The productions not bad on this, don't be too hard on yourself.

Plenty of energy and melody to keep me interested here.mloved the sugar puff at the end.

The only thing I wasn't keen too on was at the beginning with the alternating kick in the middle and Tom in the far left, nearly set my vertigo off.

Other than that though, well done.

Voting system gonna be tough into this comp.

Outrageous. Had me laughing all the way through with one well-crafted image after another, heightened by the screams in the background, then you dare add in the manager get his due in front of your eyes as you're being devoured! I loved this, every tasty bite.

Hi;

pretty unique chord progressions, vocals, lyrics etc....reminds me in times of this "rocky horror picture show" stuff - theres so much fantasy and life in this tune.

Brilliant! By complete coincidence I was also working on a shark theme "Great White Fright Night" for the summer competition. Yours blows mine right out of the, erm Water! The chorus is perfect. Very catchy and dramatic. This one has got to be right up there. Although the competition is also strong.
