Title: Your Favourite Album
Post by: Jess on May 09, 2014, 11:27:54 PM
Recently in music lessons we've been looking at the evolution of music from blues in the 1900 to the number ones of today. It's been really nice getting into 'old' music (by old I mean stuff written before I was born...which was like 1999 ;D) and I've been introduced to some great new albums like Blue by Joni Mitchell and artists such as The Doors and Bob Dylan, etc.

It got me thinking, I want to try to listen to something new at least every week, so what are your favourite albums? They can be from any era, any genre (just preferably not like classical) and by any artist and I will educate myself in the world of real music.

(You should really make the most of this opportunity, it is not often I venture out of my 'pop' comfort zone ;D)

Right..Pandora's box dude!

Where to start?

Well anything from the Beatles back catalogue will give you a grounding in anything pre 1970.

I'll give you my "Desert Island Disks". That's an BBC Radio 4 program.... well look it up on Wikipedia. basically  it's eight tracks you'd take with  you if you were stranded on a desert island. It was devised in the days of 78 rpm records not iPods. Especially as the LP didn't exist until 1958.
Eight tracks should only take you 30 mins to listen to and everybody will give you a weird mix.

Now let me think for a while.  ??? and find the You Tube links.

I'll be back........ ;)

I think anything by Queen is a good call esp Live Killers and The Works. It's prob cheating slightly but the Platinum collection is amazing too ;)

Right here is a selection...but in the morning this selection will change. :-)

A fun track from the 30's.
Louis Jordan - Jack You Dead.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NAUeL0D4SI
 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NAUeL0D4SI)
In my opinion one of Charlie Parkers best tunes if not his best playing. This "Be Bop" style was the "punk" of its time. Hated by most as too fast and "just a noise". Sound familiar?
relaxing at Camarillo - Charlie Parker 1946
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=775_0ecqZ9I  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=775_0ecqZ9I)

A song from the shows. Taking Jewish Klesmer and tweaking it to a story in Victorian London. Nice one. Watch the film, its excellent.
Reviewing the Situation - Oliver! Soundtrack Album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96rC4X_KWl4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96rC4X_KWl4)

These guys are brilliant. Ron Mael the keyboard player is brilliant. Great tune, brilliantly played and this is a live recording.
something for the girl with everything - sparks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnM3Iq977JU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnM3Iq977JU)

Not everything in the 70's was galm. Read the text over this excellent Neil Young song.
Neil Young _ Ohio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkg-bzTHeAk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkg-bzTHeAk)

The father of Synth. Not pop, not classical, just brilliant.
Jan Hammer  - The Seventh Day - 1975
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMZUA78TaRM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMZUA78TaRM)

Live concert recording. This song is so memorable that the band don't even sing. The crowd does it for them. I've been in that crowd. The original is brilliant. It's on the "Out of the Silent Planet" album.
Goldilox - Kings X - Out of the silent planet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx_YpamL3WY NO Vocal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx_YpamL3WY NO Vocal)

US art school clever dicks. Videos are always excellent but this track is exquisitely produced.
stinkfist - tool
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07pLGIgyfjw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07pLGIgyfjw)

This list is just what I though might give you an opening into some stuff. Some mainstream some not.

HAVE FUN!

Mihkay.

Damn Mihkay - that's a seriously eclectic mix!

And Jess, what a thread! What an ask! What a challenge! :D : D :D You're about to discover some hot-ass music!

Ok, it's gonna be tough not to overwhelm you, so I'm going to be as brief as I can. But I'm a believer in albums, so since you've asked for them, that's what I'm gonna give you.

Temple of low men - Crowded House

Sign o' the times - Prince

Grace - Jeff Buckley

Court & Spark - Joni Mitchell (even better than Blue in my opinion)

Blue Valentines - Tom Waits

If you only listen to one, make it the Prince, since pop is your thing. The man's genius will make you create a burning effigy of Lady Gaga and dance around it playing wah-wah guitar solos. ;)

Wow wow wow wow wow! Thank you so much, I've now got 15 songs/albums to listen to already, mihkay that must've taken you ages so thank you!
I'm also a great believer in Queen, like I have been known to cry over Freddie Mercurys no longer existence because he was just so talented and it's so sad that he's no longer here. This could get emotional.
Title: Re: Your Favourite Album
Post by: Sing4me88 on May 10, 2014, 10:55:55 AM
I think everyone gets that kinda feeling of regret that they weren't born or were too young to understand his true genius whenever Freddie Mercury died. Queen have actually had a surprising influence on some of the most successful Pop artists currently on the scene- Lady Gaga took her name from Radio Gaga while I read somewhere that 'Killer Queen' was the first track that shook Katie Perry out of her strict religious upbringing and got her bitten by the Pop bug due to the vibrance and intensity of the song. Plus I think its also overlooked that all 4 members of Queen were involved in writing songs for the band and all 4 wrote number 1 hits for the band.

When you are playing guitar like Brian May and belting out a tune like Freddie on a number 1 that you write you can follow suit of Gaga and Perry and attribute it to Queen too :)

Where, To, Start!

Beatles - The best album to start with is "Rubber Soul". At their Poppy Peak but with genius hooks galore. An album that doesn't date and is full of more ideas than some bands manage in a career.

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

This album is a beauty. It has long songs, but they are long for good reason. It is mellow, deep, and beautiful. How acoustic guitars should sound on record.

ABBA - The visitors

Abba are an album band. People forget this. This is my favourite as stands. Amazing harmonies throughout

Carole King - Tapestry

Just. Amazing. Songs...

These are four "obvious" choices. But they are obvious for good reason....

Pink Moon by Nick Drake (definitely one of the best folk albums ever) [1972]

and

Elliott Smith by Elliott Smith (the guy in my profile pic) (also folk) [1995]

If you're feeling sinister by Belle and Sebastian (indie pop) [1996]

The Clash by The Clash (punk) [1977]

OK Computer by Radiohead (well alternative or whatever you want to call it) [1997]

Souvlaki by Slowdive (dream pop, shoegaze) [1993]

This deserves some good thinking about!!

The one that i never have to think about, but is always top of my list, is Blue by Joni. Court and Spark is also brilliant. And so is Hissing of Summer Lawns. But i think Blue will always be my favourite.

Gonna have to think on what else would make my list and come back to this thread.

Always great to hear other people's lists too, and discover stuff you didn't know before!

I'm far too old for favourite albums, although there are a few I listen to more than others.

So here's one of them, "there is no up or down". Flower Travellin' Band: Satori

Hi Jess,

Ride The Lightning - Metallica.   May be it's because it reminds me of my youth, but this album is awesome, and even pips Master of Puppets for me.

Violator - Depeche Mode.          Alt synth/pop at its finest.

The Doors - The Doors.             Absolute all time classic.

Bring It ON - Gomez               Something quite different, but brill.

If You Want Blood... - AC/DC     My fave live album ever.

Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette   Quality

Cheers,

Digger

Rubber Soul - The Beatles
Tbh any Beatles album...
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Ride The Lightning - Metallica
Unia - Sonata Arctica

Hi Jess,

I know you asked for albums but a big part of my growing up involved singles. There was no way to download them for free and LPs cost so much more. It was a simple choice 4 singles over 2 weeks or save up for two weeks and buy an album. No contest really. Also some genres like glam and punk were mostly singles rather than full blown LPs.

So if you don't mind the odd single I'll chuck them in as well.

A few suggestions that avoids what's already been recommended {tip of the iceberg}:-

Ryan Adams - Ashes and Fire, Heartbreaker, Cold Roses
Bob Dylan  - Desire, Blood On The Tracks, Freeweelin, Bootleg Series Vol 1-3
Jackson Browne - For Everyman, Late For The Sky
Nirvana - Unplugged
The Verve - Urban Hymns
John Mellencamp - No Better Than This, On The Rural Route
David Bowie - Hunky Dory
T.Rex = Slider
Chuck Berry - Greatest Hits
Tha Anthology Of American Folk Music (edited by Harry Smith)
The New Penguin Book of English Folk Music {The Liberty To Choose cd} because reading lyrics is also very important and it's fascinating that songs written centuries ago can still be so interesting.

A single written by the greatest living US poet (according to Bob Dylan). Spending some time drinking his 1960s songs will do you no harm and, I suspect, a lot of good.

Nice thread Jess!

For me, albums were a big thing over singles, though with itunes I have started grabbing more singles here and there (though still get albums every now and again)

Joe Bonamassa - Any album, live ones are very good - Music Entertainer (Blues/Rock) who has been paying his dues musically since he was 11 when he opened for B.B. King. Some great songs (many covers, as is blues tradition) and some great originals. Exciting player, though he admits himself he probably plays too many notes at times. He's part of a spearhead of reviving the blues.

Guns and Roses - Appetite for Destruction - I was young when it came out, but the songs were part of the background sound of my youth. Some of the content is raunchy, and there is mention of drug use. I'll leave you to use your discretion. Songs on it for singles - Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child o' Mine, and Paradise City (they got a fair bit of radio play) Also from the Use your illusion albums, November Rain is a nice rock ballad with some good synth-strings and flutes.

Led Zeppelin - Any of their albums. With them you get to hear a lot of other artists work as well (the lifted a fair few bits from others and there were as many law suits ;) ) but a few of my stand outs - Stairway to Heaven (probably their most radio played song), Since I've Been Loving You, Kashmir, Black Dog

B.B. King - Any albums - One of the 3 Kings of the Blues (probably the most well known, Albert and Freddie being the other two). Great touch and emotion through the guitar. Blues feel is all the way though so the lyrics are often simple but have meaning. Notable songs - The Thrill is Gone, Better not look down (an upbeat happy blues), When Love Comes to Town Ft. U2, I Like to Live the Life I Sing about, I'll Survive

Frank Sinatra - Has many songs he is well known for, and you can usually get compilation albums at Tesco (or other store) for fairly little cash. Songs - Fly me to the moon, Autumn Leaves, My Way. I'll add here that much of the music of this style/era have become Jazz Standards. For playing you can buy the scores of many songs in "Real Books" that give you the harmony and melody. For a vocalist you can add little twists to make the songs your own as an exercise ;)

Greenday - Nimrod - probably their most successful album. Teenage angst through and through. Up there with Nirvana in my books. Songs - Good Riddence (Time of your life), Hitching a Ride, and from the previous album, Dookie, When I Come Around

Nirvana - Nevermind, In Utero - Grunge, speaks to several generations - Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come as You Are, Heart Shaped Box, In Bloom - basically all of their work.

KISS - Sever albums, a best of will get you a good selection - Face painted Glam Rockers, KISS were/are excellent at writing hooks. Fairly simple songs played with gusto, but they tend to draw you in and get stuck in your head.

AC/DC - Back in Black, For those about to Rock ...so many... - Basic Rock and Roll that just gets into you. It's a simple formula that they haven't changed. "I'm sick and tired of people saying that we put out 11 albums that sound exactly the same. In fact, we've put out 12 albums that sound exactly the same." - Angus Young during an interview with Jim Farber (February 27, 2000) - Songs - any of them really.... Back In Black, Hell's Bells, For Those About to Rock, Thunderstruck

I'm sat here and there is over 22GB of music on my work computer alone. The above are some of my favourites though. And yes, most are either guitar driven or feature guitar prominently.

That should keep you going for a bit :)

In terms of inspiration I'm also going to throw the Bangles and Fleetwood Mac into the mix. Both are older but both have many songs I think you'd like and that would fit your commercial Pop style. I dunno albums really but for Fleetwood Mac I'd suggest the tracks 'Don't stop', 'Lies', 'Everywhere' (complete with moonwalking pony of course!) and 'Go your own way'. For the Bangles I'd say give 'Walk like an Egyptian' 'Manic Monday' and 'He's got a secret'.

Another massive Prince fan here (he wrote "Manic Moday" for the Bangles)

Any album really but my favourite is the "Symbol" album - it just has his symbol on the front 0-(->

This album has a great mix of genres, with a great bit of humour - "Blue Light" is just simply awesome

"Sexy MF" is a cracking tune (some profanity - I think you can probably guess)  ;) and one of my favourite all time guitar solos!!!!

Sorry JESS - just got to have a quick "side bar" with TONE  :D

There is a very specific reason that I chose the "Symbol" album as my favourite PRINCE album - note I have said "favourite" album as per JESS's OP and not "best" album  ;D)

I own all of the albums PRINCE has released (and a whole load of stuff he hasn't  ;)) but the reason I favour the "Symbol" album is directly related to how I "discovered" PRINCE

My girlfriend (now wife) was a huge PRINCE fan, and so was my sister

I didn't really rate him at the time - I had heard he played lots of instruments but had assumed the guitar playing on his tracks was done by a "proper" guitarist and not just by someone that played lots of instruments and guitar happened to be one of the them

The guitarists reading this will know what I mean - you can immediately tell the difference between "someone that plays guitar" and a "guitarist"

BRUNO MARS is a perfect example - he is someone that "plays guitar" and even though the fans go wild he is NOT what I would call a "guitarist" (talking of which I would add "DOO-WOPS & HOOLIGANS to the must listen to album list for JESS)

Anyway, back off topic  ;) -  in 1995 I got tickets to see PRINCE at Wembley arena for my wife and sister, with me reluctantly going along  ::)

Unfortunately (for them) this was during PRINCE's "squiggle" phase and he was touring his then unreleased "Gold Experience" album - which was not being released because of the bust up with Warner Bros - he was not allowed to release the album so he decided to bring it to the fans

He didn't play any of his "golden oldies" (which I wouldn't really have recognised anyway at the time anyway) - BUT WHAT HE DID DO JUST BLEW ME AWAY  :o

He was basically "jamming" these songs with the tightest band I have EVER seen (Sonny T on Bass and Michael Bland on drums) and his guitar playing was just phenomenal

He played a heavy blues/rock solo, threw his symbol shaped guitar across the stage, picked up a hollow body jazz guitar and played a 5 minute solo jazz guitar piece

Everything about that show was AMAZING (and I have since obtained copies of it  8)) and I have been hooked ever since

As I couldn't get hold of the "Gold Experience" at the time (although had actually managed to get hold of all the songs prior to its release - and these were the days before torrentz!) I started going through the back catalogue and it was the Symbol album that struck a chord with me at the time

ALL of the other albums (including SOTT) are amazing but o(-> has always been "the" PRINCE album for me

I also like the GOLD EXPERIENCE and EMANCIPATION from this era

HOWEVER - I would MUCH rather see PRINCE live, ideally in person, but official DVD release, bootleg or even shaky camcorder/phone footage are still better than "studio albums"

Ironically he is touring the UK later this week but is missing out London this time  :( and I can't make the other gigs   >:(

Nonsense words by Marc Bolan, a funky rhythm and a great chorus/refrain. Oh to be young again.

I agree diademgrove, a great single, lyric was fun and cryptic but was mainly about his entourage and himself, Telegram Sam being his manager at the time if I remember correctly, Bobby was Dylan, Jake his personal assistant and being a Howlin Wolf was a reference to the Jeepster riff (another classic single) being based on a Howlin' Wolf song.

Enjoyed watching the clip.

If I had to take eight original studio albums (no live or compilations) to a desert island they would be:

Elvis Presley - From Elvis In Memphis.(1969) The finest album he made and a showcase of his genius as an interpretive singer.

Joni Mitchell - The Hissing Of Summer Lawns.(1975) I could take all her albums but this was the summit of her creativity.

The Doors - L.A. Woman (1971) - Their last and best LP and a demonstration of why they are the best band to  come out of America.

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes (2008) - The best album this century so far. Incredible songwriting, harmonies and arrangements.

Neil Young - On The Beach (1974) - Dark, brooding, crazy and brilliant all at the same time and some beautiful melodies.

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) - Towering ambition backed up with beautiful songwriting, innovative playing, arrangements and use of soundscapes. If you want to understand the real meaning of life, listen to this.

Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks(1975) - His best album and that is truly saying something! Incredibly complex and mature expression of emotional turmoil wrapped up in beauty, anger and bitterness. Not for the faint hearted.

This Mortal Coil - Blood (1991) - Indie music at it's best. An aural feast for the soul. Play this album to all your friends and ditch the ones who don't like it.

Enjoy.....

Mostly I go for songs not whole albums...but some of my faves, some already mentioned...

Naturally - JJ Cale

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac

Doors - Doors

After The Goldrush and Harvest - Neil Young

The Band - The Band (I think it's this one, anyway the one with 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down')

Fela Kuti - Original Sufferhead

Bowie - all the early ones ( giving away my age here. Ziggy was the first album I bought.)

Mikey Dread - Beyond World War III

and nobody's mentioned the Stones. Late 60s to early 70s. My fave is Beggar's Banquet. Got a soft spot for their 1st album too!

Two more singles as I'm away for an important date on Saturday.

Lulu I'm a Tiger, one my first singles bought for me by my mother who took me to watch Hull City but will be with me only in spirit on Saturday. Still a great pop song.

The Kinks; Waterloo Sunset. The greatest English songwriter of his generation in my opinion. Better than Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards. The singles he wrote in the 60s and early 70s are unsurpassed in my view. There is a lot to be learned from a Kinks greatest hits compliation.

With a lot of luck I'll be in paradise on Saturday night looking at Waterloo Sunset.

Sure the lyrics make little to no sense but they are repetitive and catchy and they use melody, hook and harmonies superbly. I'm thinking stuff like Brown Girl in the ring, Daddy Cool, Rivers of Babylon (which they lifted verbatim from scripture but man did they nail it with the melody), Marys Boy child and Holiday. I defy anyone not to get their head nodding and a smile on their face listening to this kinda music. I think in terms of trying to write simple commercial Pop for todays market a lot can be gleaned from Boney M.

I know it's picky but since we are all songwriters it ought to be said that Boney M didn't write the melody of 'Rivers of Babylon'. It was written by two blokes from The Melodians. Here's the link 'cos this is just a better version, for me.

And.. the Ray Davis thing. I have to agree that he is a great songwriter and that 'Waterloo Sunset' is one of the best,er...maybe ...ten songs of the 60s.
But I also agree with Jamie that The Stones and Beatles had a greater number of great songs than he did.
Let's just say that they were all writers of really good songs.
Unfortunately I have to disagree with something Jamie suggests. Page and Plant don't belong in the same room.

Hi Cramer, now I thought you were a sensible guy ;). Led Zep created the template for modern rock guitar music, albeit their early stuff was a lot of recycled Mississippi blues, but everyone has their influences. They've written some great rock songs and have blues (since I've been loving you), rock (rock and roll, black dog), folk (various Zep III songs) and world (Kashmir) for example. Great band, but I think this is a question of musical taste and degree? Many rock stars have referenced Zep.
So you're not wrong, it's just a question of definition ;).
Cheers  ;D

JESS - Since you tend to write commercially and the aim of this thread is to widen your influences I'm gonna throw Bob Marley into the mix. An amazing artist that has truly left his stamp on music.Paradoxically while Marley wrote awesome tracks like Redemption Song and NO woman No cry with inspiring and thought provoking lyrics with a natural stripped back feel he also wrote tracks like Three little birds, Buffalo Soldier, I shot the sheriff etc with less heavy lyrics but bouncing melodies. This is love is a master piece as is 'Could you beloved' - in the latter the hook line is perfect in terms of simplicity for the lyrics and flow and memorability for the melody. Too numerous to mention all his classics but Jammin and Exodus are up there too. Follow his style and you can't really go too far wrong at all!

I love how you said this, Lana Del Rey is my complete second to Katy Perry, new album on the 16th I. Am. Too. Excited.

Thank you for all the suggestions, I'm slowly but surely making my way through the list! Today I listened to Dark side of the moon by pink Floyd...and I don't know if it's because it had too many hooks or not enough hooks but I really didn't like it. Carole King is awesome, I knew so much more of her stuff than I first assumed! Yesterday was parachutes by Coldplay, the day before Are you experienced by Jimi Hendrix and NOEL REDDING (❤️❤️) so I'm chugging through them

Jess,

after listening to Video Games I clicked on Gods and Monsters and as a result bought Born to Die (The Paradise Edition) today. I'll get to hear it Saturday or Sunday.

Dark Side of the Moon was ok but I preferred their first album with Syd Barrett, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Try this, a song about Emily, dare to be weird,
