Haven't come across a freebee that was any good.
Maybe sth that uses soundfonts?

Lots of the loop companies offer free "sample" Sample Packs that are downloadable
Also, cover CDs on magazines are a good source for loops, samples, plugins etc. - eg Computer Music, Future Music etc.

If you take the online songwriting course by Pat Pattison, you get access to a bunch of downloadable loops. Some of them are percussion loops. They aren't VSTs, though, so maybe won't work for you.

I think these are free and take midi input and output:
GTG DPC 3 Drum Sampler
http://www.gtgsynths.com/
Line of Legends RealDrumSamples.com
MT Power Drum Kit
www.powerdrumkit.com
I am horrible at midi so I haven't really tested them properly...

Hi All,
Out of the VST's I thing GTG is the most authentic and powereful kit. I've also tried out the other recommendations. MT Power kit is pretty good as well. I think it all depends upon the song. The DSK kits are pretty good acoustic kits I think.
Thanks to Boydie and Neil regarding advice as well. I've downloaded the various loops and added a funk loop laid on top of existing drums on a track I'm working on (Golden Hours)
There are some good filem samples free with this months Music Tech as well.
So much to try out. Quite mind blowing really.
Cheers All

I highly recommend going to Native Instruments and downloading all of their free stuff including their three players Kontakt, Reactor and Guitar Rig. Not only will you find a number of drum kits included in the Kontakt player but you will also get a huge number of good quality instruments. They don't come with midi files but you will find a ton of those available on the web and they should play with the kontakt kit with little or no re-mapping.
Sources for some free midi drum files are:
http://groovemonkee.com/pages/free-midi-loops
http://www.prosonic-studios.com/midi-drum-loops
https://www.platinumloops.com/free-midi-hip-hop-drum-loops-famous-drum-breaks/
This should be enough to get you going.

Great stuff Seriousfun. I will give that a go when I get some time. A big thanks to you Neil. I have been messing with some of those samples this afternoon and combined with some other ska samples recommended by
have created a song. Ok good and bad. I had to play some guitar on it to make it slightly real. Samples are great but you have to have a great memory to remember that killer beat etc. Anyway have had so much fun it doesn't really matter. Rock drums, ska bass, trombones, think I might add some punk vocals and guitar. Who knows ?
Thanks so much all

The Ron Wickso samples are very impressive. Just put a "sample" track up on SC. Interesting experiment.
Cheers

Wah ! Allan. It is your fault that I have now forked out 169 English pounds for guitar rig 5. The presets alone are incredible. The samples you suggested have become a fab additional to my band
and I must say I am leaning towards them for drum sounds rather than midi. Thanks so much but don't tell Mrs pompeyjazz

Guitar Rig 5 is awesome, especially for the dirtier tones
I think Amplitube Fender is really good for authentic clean "Fender tube" tones but Guitar Rig 5 is definitely my "go to" for all of my heavy sounds
The trick is to keep the input level quite low and crank the amps to keep the noise under control for the distortion sounds
You will have lots of fun with it!
I am just eying up the upgrade to KOMPLETE ULTIMATE 10
