A song about realising you are on the right track in life.

“I struggled with the undertow ’til you were there with me.”

The Sullen Surf Dude

Sleep tight baby 'til the morning comes around.
You can dream a dream of loneliness; in loneliness I've found,

I'm the sullen surf dude, tangled in the sea.
I struggled in the undertow 'til you were there with me.

You said "take my hand,
Let's split from this place.
A life of suffering is written on your face.
Let this be no more,
come, swim with me.
The sullen surf dude isn't welcome on this sea."

Sleep tight baby.
Be wakened by the light.
Leave all the pain you've ever known
behind you with the night.

You're the sullen surf dude,
tangled in the sea.
you struggled in the undertow
now, you are with me.

She said '" take my hand,
let's split from this place.
A life of suffering is written on your face.
Let this be no more,
come, swim with me.
The sullen surf dude isn't welcome on this sea."

There are places on the ocean where a man can drift in danger from the land.
Take me back to safety, let the warm winds there embrace me on the sand.

Je t'aime mon ange, Sirene de la mer
(I love you my angel; Mermaid of the sea)
Je t'aime,  Siren e de la mere
(I love you, Mermaid of the sea)

This has great energy and urgency (the clapping is a nice little touch) and super production throughout. I see someone mentioned a film theme on Soundcloud and I could certainly hear this as a (wonderful) film theme.

Pretty much faultless and very entertaining. First class, well done!

@Wicked Deeds
You've really excelled yourself with this one. I am frankly staggered by your talents as a musician, arranger and songwriter all of which are on show here. The melody is effortless and you sing it beautifully. Some of the chord changes are perfect especially over the "embrace me on the sand" line. Your arrangement ideas (clapping, horns and strings) are brilliant. I'm thinking this is probably the best track you have ever put on this forum - a classic.
What more can I say?

I like everything about this so I can't offer any crits at all. Apart from the song itself, I love the drum track - the way it kicks in at certain points. Excellent. :)

@Wicked Deeds I heard this when it first popped up on my Soundcloud feed. This is exceptional, playful and joyous. Love some of the arrangement that you have here and some interesting rhythmic stuff going on there as well. Fabulous vocals as ever, full of emotion. Loved it Paul

This is fantastic. Bounces along beautifully...maybe those strings help with that? I was saying to my missus how sometimes a production just comes together...you do that much more than most. This has it all, really...everything working together to deliver something those buffoons on daytime radio could do themselves a favour by listening to, instead of playing the shit out of their tired old lowest common denominator car boot sale fodder cd collection.

A triumph.

Hi Paul, this is up to your normal super standard! Love the variations in the sections and instrumentation, the strings coming in the way they do is superb. Agree with just about everything everyone has said about this.

Really good Paul!

Cheers

We've mentioned this before but I hadn't commented. This is so good, such great tempo and enthusiasm. And such a great metaphor. Very original and inventive. The strings and claps are fabulous. Everything is fabuleux.

@Wicked Deeds  beautiful big production on this, great string washes and stabs, nice flamenco claps, really clever use of different sounds to give movement and different sections, but it all ties together really well... super slick 👏👏👏
Sound formed in a vacuum may seem a waste of time...

@5 guys named Lars,

So pleased that you recognise where all of my inspiration comes from.  Thank you.

@man made material,

It was fun to write and put this one together.  Sometimes productions are done so easily, everything falls into place and they are suddenly finished, as this one was in very little time. Thank you.

Thank you so much @adamfarr:)

Thank you @Jamie  :)

@PaulAds,

So pleased that you enjoyed listening my friend!  :)

@pompeyjazz,

in a nutshell, it is a song of great joy so I'm pleased that you picked up on this sentiment.  Thank you my friend.

@montydog,

It is so kind of you to write such a compliment.  I have definitely benefited from my new-found peaceful life and feel that my writing is getting back to where I would like it to be.  Family aside,  and looking back over the years, I realise that I've devoted more time to songwriting than anything else in life.  I think I would have struggled without this  wonderful cathartic activity that has been a constant companion.

@kevysc that is so kind of you to say.  Thank you. :)

@ChrisPrice,

thank you.  Pleased that you enjoyed listening.

Hi Paul, I remember commenting on this one when you had done an early draft. It had the core of a great song already there. You seem to have now effortlessly built up a fine instrumental backdrop for it, I say effortless because it fits together so seamlessly. I particularly liked the contrast between the sweet strings and the edgier guitar. Lyrics are great too, as I mentioned before.

At your best 👍

Great arrangement and production. Particularly like the strings and the surfy guitar part and the claps when they come in at 2.14.

Lovely lyrics.... Marie must feel very special (I’m assuming the inspiration 🙂).

Great title too!
