I wrote this song some years ago
It's a bit grufty, 1st testament
Thinking i know better, I've now remixed it.
It's fun.

Feedback would be thrilling.

n' lyrics:

The Mark Of Cain

first man borne of earthly woman
wakeful n' fresh as the morning dew
the heavens fell, he was false as hell
over which he was meant to rise and rule

crouched was sin, waiting in desire for him
only one shade darker than quicksand
sunken in haste, so as to mask all trace
the blood of Abel crying out from the land
rolling and rounded
running in a circle of blood and of grain
never were we truly forgiven
only smitten with the
the mark of Cain
angry and vain
the mark of Cain, of Cain, Cain

expelled from all the glory of Eden
sent forth n' far from the grace of God
flesh o' his brother, n' fruit of th' field
he built a city, settled in the land of Nod

industry of lust, engines of sin
we begin wi' all fair favour spent
sound n' fury, live n' love thy misery
daggers in the smiles of foe and of friend
thus were laid the laws of human nature
and they don't change
the dye is cast from the first to the last
with the mark
the mark of Cain
bold and profane
the mark of Cain, of Cain, Cain

ne'er to be truly forgiven only smitten with the
the mark of Cain, angry and vain
the mark of Cain, bold and profane
the mark of Cain, of Cain, of Cain
the mark of Cain

Have I heard this before @rightly Your lyrics are on another dimension. So cleverly creative. I’m getting a strong late Jim Morrison vibe from this one. I love the brushes and the contrasting keyboard sounds plus the subtle brass. So, so good. So individual and unique. Fabulous 😀

Wonderful!  Definitely a Doors feel to my ears and that’s a plus.  That brass sounds distant and eerie; fits the story so well. It’s an experience listening to your art.

Cheers - John.

The doors? I got that elsewhere.
It is rather riddled with old testament angst.
Yes, brass is always tricky but we're working on it.

Thanks for the compliment John.
I'm still perplexed when I get the occasional hater.

I really liked it!
My favorite lines where
"the heavens fell, he was false as hell
over which he was meant to rise and rule"
very nice progression on the lyrics!

@rightly  I think I remember this. Your lyrics are as excellent and original as always and your production skills have improved a lot. Nick Cave comes to mind (did I tell you I met him once?) However, there's (still) only one Rightly :)

Thanks shadowfax.
When I wrote this.
I was stuck in hospital with the bible in pdf format.
I went through parts of it, looking for useful insults.
2 verses of a poem emerged, then I was released from hospital
It slowly came together over a year
At some point I started looking for a chord progression for it.
I really wanted Bdim prominent in the progression.
It's a strange song, I like it.

@Elvis Nash yes, I was thinking about a story that might resonate.
Bible stories should do the trick.

@Theresa I do give consideration to the lyrics.
They can be fun or deep but should never be daft.
Unless you're spinal tap.

I'm glad you liked the song.

@kevysc
Cave? Yes I've heard that before.
He does throw himself into darker themes
I've also heard reference of the doors, regarding this track.

Cave is someone to meet
I suppose he's a sensitive soul, offstage, huh?

Glad you like the track.
 Plenty more in the pantry.
Thanks. 😜

Oh my, I always get excited about your songs and this is another gem. I haven't gone deep into the lyrics if I'm honest, I'd probably interpret them completely wrong if I did. But I love this track and all the atmospherics. Brilliant :)

Hi Chris.
The lyrics are fine, just the cain n Abel story retold with different imagery.
I had the... thing with being brought up a Catholic.
There was always them bible stories sneaking about, to be found by the curious.
I borrowed from Shakespeare, at least once, from the good book too.

I'm looking at a more acoustic version  would be nice to put it on stage.
Glad you like it, buddy.

A blues song that tells us a story. Good musical arrangement of the text!
