Hi all
I just wanted to give you a heads up that a MAJOR upgrade to the forum will be happening soon
I would like to thank TONE for the work he has been doing behind the scenes to get the upgrade ready and helping me with the testing
Here are some highlights to whet your appetite...
The new forum will be completely mobile responsive
There will be a brand new feature where members will be able to "@tag" each other within posts to alert them if they are mentioned - so member interactions should be much improved
The interface will be much "slicker"
I have taken onboard recent feedback about visibility and the communication of key rules (e.g. The 2 week rule) to new members so the guidelines will be reviewed, regular newsletters will be sent out and the welcome emails will be reviewed and updated
The upgraded forum will have a more modern and professional look and feel, incorporating the new logos (mugs and t-shirts may also be available in the future ;D) but the existing functionality and use will remain as it is now
There will also be some other new features "in development" but we will be taking an "agile approach" and deliver the new forum upgrade with the most requested features as soon as possible
If we know a date that this will be happening we will let you know - but if the forum is suddenly down for maintenance in the near future you will know why
I am very excited about this update and I hope you will be too
**Update**
Everyone should be receiving a PM with the forum upgrade info
The current forum will be copied over to the new site so we will simply pick up exactly where we left off but it does not look like it is possible to copy over AVATARS so please make sure you backup your avatar of have it saved locally so you can upload it to the new forum
See you on the other side...
-
This is really exciting!! Love getting upgrades to things and new shiny features!!
A massive thank you to yourself and Tone for all the work you've put in here and of course for all the work you and the other mods do day to day keeping this ship a sailing!
Look forward to these updates :D
All the best
Darren
-
Sounds great. It'll encourage even more use I am sure, really looking forward to it. And thank you to you and Tone for all your hard work.
-
Yeah..bring it on!!!
-
Current schedule is to do the work next weekend. The only possible snag I can anticipate from the testing I've done is that you might lose your avatars. So if you really like your avatar, back it up now!
It's been so long in the planning, developing, testing etc I can't believe it's actually pretty much ready :o
-
Nice. i'm looking forward to the changes.
-
Sounds great! I look forward to the @tag function.
-
Rawk and Roll!
Looking forward to the mobile friendly thang. I been a sufferin' boys,I been a sufferin'.
-
Great work Boydie,
Sounds exciting

This avatar loss might not be so bad. I'll see you with a new face.
-
Look forward to it. I don't have regular access to a computer, so mobile-friendly sounds great to me!
-
Yes I'm looking forward to this too.
I trust there won't be any drawbacks.
A big thanks to the creators and the moderators, this forum really works for me.
I might be interested in a a mug or a shirt. :)
This is a top site and very supportive.
Rightly

That is the plan!
There will obviously be a new "look and feel", and things might be in different places, but we have worked very hard to ensure that the core functionality remains EXACTLY the same - but there will be some nice new "bells and whistles" as well ;D
-
In my experience, computer upgrades of any kind never go smoothly, but we can always be optimistic. You know. Hope for the best, be prepared for the worst. ;D
-
I know that many backups have been made!!!!
-
I made so many backups that my hard drive ran out of free space :(
Anyone got a spare tb going for a good cause? ;)
-
Tone, I've got a lot of IT experience so if you get any problems or if you have any pre live concerns give me a shout. :)
-
Very good to know, thanks Pompey! I'll be in touch if it all goes wrong! :p

**FINAL CALL - Back Up Your Avatars Ready To Re-Upload To The New Forum**
-
Whoa! Though I had obviously been warned, an initial shock but very modern and starting to find my way around again. Very cool and great work I must say!
-
Looks very good! Well done and thanks for all the (sometimes unappreciated) hard work.

On my Android phone, I can only post in landscape view.

Looks really slick. Well done fellas. (Typo in the lyirc subheading by the way!)

Thanks - typo fixed and I have added the posting rules to each subheading ;D

On my Android phone, I can only post in landscape view.
@redrhodie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21171) in portrait mode you can use the 'quick post' text area at the bottom of the page instead of hitting the reply icon.

That's not coming up at all, and I don't get a keyboard for typing until I turn to landscape, and if I type a message and turn to portrait during it, it's lost.
-
Try this: don't click reply. Just read the thread you want to post in and scroll all the way to the bottom until you run out of page and can scroll no further

Nope, there's no post box, and my keyboard doesn't come up. I'm posting this in landscape view.
-
Am I the only one having this issue? I'm always causing trouble. Haha.
-
Very slick looking, thanks for all the work and testing.

I think it's just you @redrhodie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21171) ;)
Do you have an up to date Android version? Is your screen on the smaller size?
-

My phone is new. I still have my old one, also Android, and the issue is the same on that as well. But I'm probably doing something wrong. Sorry to bother you.
So, when I switch over to desktop view, the post box is way over on the right and really small. I can post in portrait view that way, though. Just thought I'd tell you that. Maybe it will help you fix my problem.

Hi
Great new look to the site, but as it`s about the music,is there any chance of streaming songs uploaded, even just samples? So as soon as you log in you hear something, anything. Also there`s a lot of songs in finished and work in progress sections, can at the start of the topic/upload can the submitter describe the genre? We a;ll have our main likes and dislikes. It`d be easier to pick what to listen to if the start of the topic says `soul torch-song female vocal` or something. I`m pretty new here and unless I go to the links and listen I don`t have any idea what kind of style the songs are in,or what styles contributers specialise in. This would help in finding collaborations.
Cheers
-
What browser are you using @redrhodie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21171) ?
I'll look into your request @devilhoned (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21273) although I would say auto playing media is a big no no in the web community generally. I do think embedded media would be really good though so I'll see what I can do there
If you're looking for collaborators why not post in the collaboration forum?
-
I have thoughts about auto streaming (no, please--I have limited bandwidth, although, if there were a universal setting, controllable by individual members according to their own preferences, it would be okay then)
and about identifying genre (I would have a very hard time with that, as I frequently don't know what genre I'm hearing or writing, except for the really obvious ones like jazz and folk. I would need to take a class on identifying genres.)
-
Yay! Just when I'd given up, it works!!!! Thanks tone!
Lynn
-
@redrhodie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21171) That is fantastic news LYNN ;D
I was having a similar issue on my Windoze phone and it has also started working!!!!!
I think that it is most of the bugs squashed - and there have been some new features added already ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I am just now noticing
a couple anomalies an anomaly (I forgot the second one by the time I was done explaining the first one. Perhaps I'll be back.)
A link on my bookmarks bar takes me to http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/unread/?all;start=0. I use it a lot.
Tonight I clicked the top post on the list of unread posts: http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=14679.0
When done there, I clicked the bookmark link again. The same post was still at the top of the list.
I clicked it again and clicked the bookmark link again. Still there.
I checked the box next to the post and clicked "Mark Selected Read". The page did something, the check mark disappeared. Post was still there.
I clicked "Mark all messages as read".
The list disappeared, as expected, and the top post was gone, as well.
Then I browsed to the problem post and clicked the bookmark link from there. The post was back on the list!
Clicked "Mark all messages as read". Still there. Uh-oh! Should have left well enough alone.
Browsed to another post. Clicked bookmark link. Problem post still there.
Clicked "Mark all messages as read" again. This time the post disappeared.
I tested it a couple more times. Any time I browse to the problem post, it shows back up on my list of unread posts, even though I've read it. Then I have to browse to some other post or page on the forum before I go back to unread posts and click "Mark all messages as read" to get it off the list.

@CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) TONE is looking in to this as the unread posts bit is currently not quite working yet
@tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1) this link may help track down the issue as I had not previously seen this page:
http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/unread/?all;start=0
-
Hmmm, that's strange. I can't replicate the issue here on my computer. @CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) can you try logging out and logging back in again to see if that fixes the issue?
@Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) can you also try to replicate the issue and let me know what happens? Thanks :)
-
Ok you crazy cats. You should now see a link to unread posts when you hover over 'Home' on the main menu.
You're welcome! :D :D :D
Also added a link to recent posts just because I could :p
-
I found that the 'unread replies' link still exists:
http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=unreadreplies
It would be good to get that in the home menu...
-
Hi RAM
There is now a link to UNREAD posts in the HOME menu drop down
I think you just need to update your link to this one: http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/unread/?all;start=0
-
awesome job on the upgrades Tone and Boydie - very creative!
My favourite colour is, well, grey - but I like the look and feel of the new site ;D ;D
And the boingy menu items too ;D ;D
-
Hi RAM
There is now a link to UNREAD posts in the HOME menu drop down
I think you just need to update your link to this one: http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/unread/?all;start=0
Actually the links don't lead to the same content. Your link is for unread posts, and Ram's link is for unread replies. I thought I knew the difference when I began this post, but now I'm here I don't really know!
But I just followed both links and the content was definitely different....
I can add it very easily if required boss @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510)
-
Hey @boydie
The link I posted is specifically for unread replies to your own posts, the link in the home menu is for all unread posts. Both links existed on the old forum and I think both were particularly useful. Narcissist's like me love to quickly know when their own posts have some activity ::)
Either that or it is a good ego knock down when you don't get any replies ;D
-
I think having it in the HOME menu drop down means we can have all the different options - so add away @tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1)
-
All done squires @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) and @Ramshackles (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6887)

@tone, I can no longer replicate this snafu. I'll let you know if it ever happens again.
-
I didn't do that right, did I??? Let's see....
@tone. Is that it??
-
All done squires @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) and @Ramshackles (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6887)
That's great, really helpful!
-
I didn't do that right, did I??? Let's see....
@tone. Is that it??
Nope, you did it nearly right. in order for tagging to work, you have to type the @ symbol and the name, but when the name appears in the drop down list you have to click or tap it. Otherwise it doesn't recognise it as a tag @CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928)
Try again :)
-
Okay, here goes... @tone <<sigh>> I typed the @ and then I typed "tone". Nothing happened. No drop down list appeared. What's the long method? Maybe tone? Nope, that's for emailing.... Hmmm. I looked at the source code for the @CaliaMoko in your message, but it's really long. That would be unwieldy to do by hand. Maybe it's just my computer refuses to cooperate. ??
-

Super amazing and awesome
-
@CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) Just try typing the @ symbol followed by the first 3 letters, without any space,
If you are wanting to tag tone type @ton and then wait to see if a list appears
If it doesn't can you list your browser etc.
-

You might be going too quick. When you type @ the forum has to query the database, which depending on your internet connection could take a few seconds. Hang in there, I'm sure it will work if you persevere :)
-
I'm a speed typer, so I'll try to s l o o w d o w n n n....
Tagging @tone
I typed that really slowly, but no excitement from the system at all. I even left the cursor sitting there a few seconds, but...nothing. Does some fancy thing like java or something need to be running for this to work?

Not java - javascript. They sound the same but they're worlds apart. I'd be very surprised if you have javascript disabled, but some people do. Are you one of them?! :o
-
I am not one of them. I checked to make sure and javascript IS enabled. So that isn't it.
-
And now the first post on the list of "unread posts" won't go away again. I think it's just me. Computers hate me. They want to make me crazy. Probably no one else will be able to replicate what's happening. But this post (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=14689.0;topicseen) stays at the top of the list of unread posts. I haven't tried "mark all posts read" yet, but I imagine it'll go away if I do. But if I browse to the same post on the board, it'll be back on the list, etc, etc.
Just thought I'd let you know. I would @tone or @boydie, but that doesn't work for me, as you know.... <<sigh>>
Vicki
-
Vicki, are you using an old computer by any chance? I wonder if you're having compatibility issues with an older browser vs newer code?
-
I don't think that's it, Tone. My computer is fairly new. I've had it a few months, but I bought an up-to-date one, hoping it would last me a few years into retirement. I'm running Chrome Version 64.0.3282.140 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Windows 10.
Specs are:
HP ProBook 470 G4
Processor--Intel Core i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70 GHz 2.90 GHz
64 bit
Windows 10 Pro Version 1709
OS Build 16299.125
-
I just had a thought @CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928)
Do you have any kind of "pop up" blocker
I wonder if your browser is seeing the list that appears as a "pop up" and is blocking it?
And also to doubly confirm, you aren't putting a space after the @ symbol are you? - there must be no spaces
-
@Boydie, @tone, just realised I am having the same problem using Chrome. no tagging :(
-
Hmmm - I am use Chrome at home with no problems
-
Me too. Chrome on desktop and mobile, no problems. I admit I'm baffled by this. Out of curiosity, could you try another browser and report back @Ramshackles (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6887) and @CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928)
-

I do have a popup blocker in Chrome, but I have had it set up to allow popups on the forum for some time. I just checked to make sure it is still on the list of allowed popups, and it is.
Also, I have consistently left no spaces, so that isn't it, either.
And, finally, in response to tone's suggestion to try a different browser, I logged in with Internet Explorer and tried to @somebody, but still no joy.
It has always been thus with me and computers. I never have the simple-solution problems. It's always something baffling, sometimes never to be resolved. I have long maintained I need my own personal IT department.
-
@tone Sending this from MS Edge...no luck :(
-
I think the failure of my computer to erase "read" messages from my list of "unread messages" may have something to do with refreshing. It's like I have to do something else to refresh the screen and get rid the messages I've read or marked read. But, if so, I still don't know what to do about it. To fix it, that is. I can browse away from the site and come back as a work around. Although, I feel like some of the "unread" messages are disappearing along with the "read" ones sometimes. I haven't tracked closely enough to be sure, but it sure seems like two or three songs sometimes disappear from the list when I just follow the link to one unread the message and then come back.
-
Testing tagging on my phone
@boydie. Ok looks like that didn't work. So that's two devices that don't work. Plus the computer is on the computer network and the phone is through the cell phone network as I have wifi blocked on it.
Trying another computer in a few minutes.
-
@boydie Testing tagging on a different computer but same home network.
@CaliaMoko
Is it possible I have something set up in my profile that blocks this function?
-
@CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) Could you just check something
Could you click on PROFILE in the header and then on MENTIONS and then click on SETTINGS
You should only have a tick in the top box (receive a PM when mentioned)
-
Wait a sec, I don't even see "mentions"? (Also got the same issue with not being able to tag (Chrome Win10))
-
I don't have anything called "Mentions" when I click on "Profile", either. I have:
Profile
Summary
Account Settings
Forum Profile
-
Ah - this may help us track things down as there should be a MENTIONS option at the end of this list
@tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1) can you think of a reason MENTIONS would not load for some members?
Is there anything that would prevent it being loaded for some members?
-
Yeah, I don't have 'mentions'.....
-
Yup, no "mentions" here either...
-
Add me to the the list of the unmentionables, mind you I've been called that for years. :P
-
I will need to look into this in detail as I have no clue at the moment. I'll spend some time with it over the weekend and report back
-
I've just done a global reset on the settings for mentions. Please can you all log out and log back in and check again @CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) @Ramshackles (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6887) @The S (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20544) @Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061)
Thanks :)
-
Logged out and back in. Nope.
Logged off computer and back in. Nope.
Logged off computer, cleared cache, logged off forum and back in. Nope.
Still no "Mentions".
-
I think I have fixed the mentions issue ;D @tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1) will be sooo proud (and shocked if I have :o)
@CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) @Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061) @The S (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20544) @Ramshackles (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6887) - Could you all please try @ tagging again
I think the issue was caused by mentions not being activated for all member groups - it should all be working now (fingers crossed)
-
Damn @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) I was looking for that exact setting but couldn't find it anywhere. Where is it?
-
@Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061) @CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) @tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1) @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) Did ya get dis message? Just testing. Great work from you @tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1) and @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) for sorting this out. The new Forum stylee is great. Do we have a choice of colours dependant on the season ?
-
@tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1) it is in the membergroup permissions (Admin - Permissions - select "modify" for the member group ("mentions" is last in the first block of permissions)
Interestingly the option doesn't show for the "Moderators" group - I assume they will inherit it from the "Regular Member" group, which should now have mentions enabled
-

Yay - @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) I got the notification
Let the tagging begin!!!!!!
-
It's a great new addition to the forum :)
-
Yeah, I don't have 'mentions'.....
@Ramshackles (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6887) - you should have now ;D
As you are a mod you are in a different member group so it would help if you could try it out and see if it is now there
-
Yep @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) It works :) Got your @stuff :)
-
Yep. I got 3 messages.
From @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269)
From @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510)
From @tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1)
There was no money in any of them. >:(
-
If anyone is still awake...I'm testing my tagging ability... @tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1), @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) ..... Woh! It works!! At least, I get the drop down box and can choose.... Can I post a gif of a happy dance here? No? Well, I guess you'll have to use your imagination....
-
@adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) Hurrah, works for me too! Thanks so much!
-
@Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510)
Aha!
-

AWESOME!!!! - I think that is now all bugs squashed and suggestions / tweaks implemented ;D ;D ;D
YAY
WELCOME TO THE NEW FORUM
I will write up the new guidelines and some short instructions on how to use all the new features such as:
- @tagging and Mentions
- Embedding SoundCloud songs directly in to the forum
- Embedding YouTube videos directly in to the forum
- How to view Unread Posts, Unread Replies and Recent Views
- You can now "Reply All" to PMs, which will help massively with coordinating multiple collabs
A massive Thanks to @tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1) for not only implementing these features but squashing bugs within 1 WEEK!!!!!
Onwards and upwards and hopefully this major upgrade to the forum will ultimately make it easier and better to write, collab and share songs

Looks like a lot of hard work has gone into this new look and feel + extra features. Well done to all those involved.
