Hi guys - this one came to me while I was painting a door :)
Any and all comments are welcome - and thanks for listening (if you do :) )

Another Coat of Paint

I show up with my rollers and my brushes
I cover up the floors to keep 'em clean
I roll out a new hue to make the walls look new
If only I could do that for the love that we once knew

But another coat of paint ain't gonna do it
Another coat won't cover up the blue
Until I'm over you, my heart will show right through
And another coat of paint ain't gonna do

I can mix and match my colours to perfection
My customers all praise the work I do
I never hear complaints about the cov'rage of my paints
But they always seem too faint to hide a heart that's torn in two

And another coat of paint ain't gonna do it
Another coat won't cover up the blue
Until I'm over you, my heart will show right through
And another coat of paint ain't gonna do

I pack up for the day
Head for home in my old van
Every rattle that it makes says:
"You're a lonely, lonely man"
"Such a lonely lonely man"

...and ...
Another coat of paint ain't gonna do it
Another coat won't cover up the blue
Until I'm over you, my heart will show right through
And another coat of paint ain't gonna do

Until I'm over you, the blues will show right through me..
And another coat of paint ain't gonna do..

What funny and at the same time tragic lyrics you wrote there! Nice harmonies as well. I find it is a fun song, eventhough you are describing a love breakup. Refreshing to hear, that you don't have to write cheesy songs to tackle that subject

Hey Paulski, that's great... I haven't heard one of yours for months so that was a real tonic.  It's an immaculate excerpt from a musical that really should exist ... perfectly balanced between being upbeat and sad.  I like the key change in the middle 8 and the vocal melody differences you introduce towards the end.  Now you will just have to go on and write the rest of the musical!
It's all too beautiful.

very entertaining

like cole porter

you're quite versatile
divers and articulate

always entertaining
sometimes exceptionally good!
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

And there you have it.

Hi Paul,

Brill piano tone and playing. Got that slight Western feel to it.
Or maybe a song to play over an old black and white silent movie - maybe a Harold Lloyd or Chaplin break up song.

Really clever lyrics delivered with panache.

Hope you're well.

@Paulski  this absolutely has to be on a west end stage! It’s brilliant! There’s a sense of humour to mix with the pain that has me smiling and shedding a tear at the same time. You’ve managed to tightrope walk a line that brings together heartache and painting walls in a way that shouldn’t work but absolutely does, bravo!!!  I love the way you’ve treated the song as well, with just the piano and some really well judged and sung BVs… is this part of a project ‘the lonesome painter’ or something? I could see it working… anyway really good stuff 👏👏👏
Sound formed in a vacuum may seem a waste of time...

Cheers for listening and taking the time to comment everyone

Hola @moraamarolaloba Thanks Mora - appreciate the kind remarks :D

@Philipp191985 Cheers Phil - I guess you picked up on the tongue-in-cheek - purely accidental BTW :D I have trouble sounding serious at the best of times but I'm glad it worked for you despite the juxtaposition of sad/happy :D

@PaulyX thanks Pauly I wasn't trying to write a musical number - but what the heck :D As long as it works! Seriously though the door I was painting was grey and it took three coats of white paint and I could still see the grey :( and it wasn't cheap paint either!

@rightly thanks you kind sir :D Cole Porter is a god to me so I'm chuffed at that comment.

@digger72 cheers Digger That piano's EastKeys out of the box. Thanks for the support :D

@man made material - thanks for that. the lonesome painter musical - I like it! :D
