hello

I thought i'd type this to keep my mind occupied as i'll be playing a 40-minute solo slot at the NABD (National Association for Bikers with Disability) rally near Hedley in Northumberland this afternoon...

Got my setlist sorted out

No more heroes
My girl
California dreaming
You're gonna lose that girl
The circle
Boys don't cry
A man of great promise
Walk on by
A new england
It must be love
Alone again or
English rose
London calling
Always the sun
The snake
Oliver's army
Golden brown
That's entertainment

Don't let me be misunderstood

I doubt i'll have time to bang them all in...but I'll give it a go...I last played a gig with just myself and an acoustic guitar about 30 years ago...and I'm ever so slightly nervous...one of those "what am i doing here and why did i agree to this" moments. I'm kind of looking forward to it too, though. I think it does us good to put ourselves through the ringer once in a while  :)

I'm playing 4:50 - 5:30pm.

I hope to return to the forum in one piece either tonight or tomorrow...fingers crossed  :P

Good luck with the gig Paul. Like the song list, not going to play any of your own stuff?

thanks very much, Tom!

i've left a sealed envelope on the mantelpiece for my wife to open in the event of my untimely demise...

it contains an apology to the forum to explain the lack of finished song reviews, a fiver for each of the kids and the phone numbers of several better men :-)

I hope it all went well for you. Looking forward to hear the reviews of the show and of course the all important post show interview.

It went ok...

As I came off-stage, a woman who runs a nearby music venue asked me for my card...I told her I didn't have any. She was really nice...that was lovely of her. So I must have been quite good.

For my part, I didn't really enjoy it...the softer numbers kind of left me cold and the crowd (which wasn't a lot for the earlier performers) didn't seem to want to come along with me...fair enough...what can you do? They either fancy it or they don't. I find it too easy just to shrug my shoulders and think "f**k em".

I was halfway through a jaunty "that's entertainment" when it dawned on me that I'd rather be at home with a glass of wine.

Having said that, I loved playing "you're going to lose that girl"...I found a fab version by "the nutopians" on Soundcloud...playing it reminded me of a Beatles parody I wrote years ago called "please please yourself".

I was much happier when I reverted to type with fairly mean versions of "London Calling" and "Oliver's Army"  and I left them with a vengeful stabbing of The Animals' "don't let me be misunderstood" as a parting shot.

Gigs have often felt like a war of attrition...whereby it's not always possible to win them over, so I've needed to fight them to a stalemate or beat them into submission...which is not what I ever hoped, intended or wanted to do.

I was very worried about my voice, but I'd changed the key of a couple of songs to make it easier, and dropped a couple that are a bit of a strain to sing...and that worked out ok...my voice was never up to much anyway...but I was pleased it hasn't got any worse.

It was an experiment of sorts...and I've learned some lessons from it.

So for now, I think I'm done with playing live...I just don't enjoy it much anymore.

Thanks to everyone here for their good wishes...it was a big help  :)

Don't be disheartened

Just because a crowd wasn't dancing, singing along or whooping and clapping after each song doesn't mean they didn't love it

If a music venue was interested enough to ask for a card I think that is proof enough you did great

Congrats!

I think that gigging is sometimes so hard that, unless you can't live without it, then it almost isn't worth it... (though being in a band may be easier than solo)

I never did many but remember stress, terror, insults, indifference, frustration and jealousy. And the occasional unbeatable buzz when magic happened.
