Where to start?

So many lovely comments...I'm a little embarrassed by it all.

I'm really very grateful.

I've learned so much from the Forum over the last 18 months or so...and met some great new friends  :)

Thanks, everyone...

Brilliant stuff - turned out so well. It has a reall singalong feel which I think partly comes from the very natural and unforced sounding lyrics and the feeling you put into them.
Really liked it. The guitar sound reminded me strongly of someone. But then I thought, probably PaulAds...

A good all round song mate..harmonies would help the chorus a lot though..

A tip to help make the chorus stand out a little bit more ...turn it up ever so slightly so's it a touch louder than other parts of the song...not enough that peeps can spot that it's been turned up though..gotta be careful..

best, Kevin :)

In general I don't care for negative-topic songs, but I have to like this one. It's one of my most recent favorites. Everything in it goes together so well. I like the way you avoid resting on the tonic of the key, giving strong support to the unstable message of the song.

My favorite part:

WTF? I turn my back for just a second (well a few months...) and when I get back you sound like this!?!? Quite a bit different from what I remember hearing from you but very good. Great lyrics (as always), some nice progressions and I agree with some of the others about the vocals. Mix sound really good but I did find the guitars a little on the thin side but that is really a minor thing.
Bravo!

Hey Paul

Excellent work here!  ;D ;D
Boy with you, LostBoy, Jambrains etc. doing vocals this forum rises above most of 'em out there IMHO.
Good chord prog here and great hook/lyrics.
I agree with CS and skub in wanting harmonies in the chorus, and of course I have to whine a teensy bit about length :( I just think if it ended below 3:30 mins I would want to hit play over and over.

Well I'm going to listen again anyway - it's so good!

Thanks, folks.

Just a quick line to let you know that our good friend of this parish, Mr John Pompeyjazz, has very kindly donated some lovely harmony vocals to go with this, and I'll likely upload the new version shortly...

Great advice, duly followed.

Lovely melancholy tune, with a really nice central chord progression on it.

Love that bit where the bass and the jangly guitar move together in the chorus.

There is a bit of dead space between 2.25 and 2.45 where nothing much happens that could be trimmed a bit.

Lyric is a little downbeat for my tastes but the hook line and title is a really a good one.

Great stuff :)

Tom.

Paul,
Like this. Neat intro and familiar chords set up for the story.
Loved the lyrics - rhyming 'quicksand' and 'and' board line genius and fab the last pair of lines
Thoughts: at 2.30 the bass solo seemed an opportunity missed, perhaps a musical (minor) middle eight would have a given it a bit of relief?
Lots to like with  mid 70's vibe to it.
 :)

I don't get much time to listen to many songs.
so much quality on this site.

This song is excellent. Seems to go a long way and never falters.
I'll not listen to another song tonight... I'll tidy up and practice some.

all the best, Rightly

Hi Paul, this is the best thing I've heard from you. Great vocals and melody, love the quirky chord structure and well judged playing. Lyric is excellent, but yours always are. Love it, sounds very pro to my ear!
Cheers
