I thought of something else.

If you use reverb to push instruments back in the mix, you can easily end up with a build-up of low-end mud from the reverb. So you can high-pass filter your reverbs to create some space. You can often do this quite brutally with no adverse effects, so just keep pushing that HPF to the right until it sounds actively worse.

Also, you might want to avoid sending your kick and bass to reverb entirely. I tend to send none of the kick and only a little of the bass.

Reverb or delay on vocals can also create a build-up when vocal sibilance clashes with cymbals and snares. If this is happening, you can run your vocal effects sends through your de-esser's harshest settings. Failing that, you can notch the hell out of them with a deep, narrow-Q cut somewhere around 5khz.
