How we feel inside (working title “Labels Define”).

I hadn’t written for several months and it began to gnaw away at me.  I never think I’ll lose the ability to write, however, now and then, I have to prove this to myself.  So began a frantic period of writing in which I wrote a full album in a week.  I haven’t done that before and perhaps never will do so again.  A big thank you  (and apology) to John @pompeyjazz . I sent a new song to him every day for 7 or eight days as I laid the foundations of a new album called  “Home Of Kings”. 

“How We Feel Inside”.  was the first song written for this project.  Many of the ideas simply crept into my subconscious.  Suffice to say I have a strong dislike for the labels “Generation Z and X.  They are in my opinion simply not helpful.  We’re all people in this crazy mixed-up world, trying our best to get through life and hopefully derive enjoyment and happiness from aspects of the journey. 

I initially had a lovely guitar vocal version of this.  I then went on to add various instruments including accordion which is one of my favourites.  Hopefully the lyrics might engage.  They are simply my observations of the world in which we live.

It’s such a fucked up world.
I once believed that  I would turn it on its head.
Who did I fool?
Unprepared, I  quietly closed the door then left for school.

Generation Z, that’s a phrase that should be dead.
Why aren’t we one?
Labels define, undermine and divide.
They couldn’t tell you how we feel inside.

It’s such a lottery.
I do believe if you could stand inside these shoes you’d see.
Lost to our youth.
We’re living proof that no one’s getting out of this alive.

Generation X, regardless of your sex, we’re still the same.

A face in the mirror, growing old, tired of pain.

Oh a nasty theme
I remember trying to call it a night.
I was green in 80s Manchester. (The pop charts were good!)
As a teen I was once working behind a popular bar.
"Drink up please, we're closing in 10" could get eventful.
Fish n chip shops could also become the scene of many crimes.
The English kebab evaded any accurate description.

Taxi offices were often where all the bother started after a night out…one night in Consett, our taxi arrived and my mate jumped in the front seat. I’d been chatting to someone, so I came out a few seconds later and there were three guys arguing and trying to get into the cab. My mate told them that this was our taxi and one of them shouted “do you want to get out of the taxi and make something of it, like?” My pal, who was a little anxious, shouted back “No. Do You want to get IN to the taxi and make something of it?” Which didn’t really work at all and only added to the general confusion.

I tried to calm things down with the kindly suggestion of perhaps getting their own taxi as I pushed past them and got in the back seat. The taxi driver panicked and pulled away before I’d got properly sat down, so I had one leg in and one leg out of the car, doing this comedic leg shuffle, like I was trying to push start a skateboard.

At that point, one of them kicked me in the head. Just a glancing blow, fortunately. I shouted at the driver to stop the *#*# car so I could attend to my assailants, but he was a bit spooked and keen to get away. As another kick was aimed at me, I managed to grab the door and half close it, so he didn’t half whack his shin off it as he kicked out again. I then managed to close the door and proceed with our journey. Canny night, though.

What are you using for drums nowadays, John? These sound brilliant.
