I know, normally I'd put the lyrics here but I'm so excited about the idea itself I just had to share it!
The premise is:
In 1948 two opposing forces came into being. The Berlin Wall went up (evil) and 3 things were 'invented' which I will regard as the "rock and roll trinity":
1 - the fender broadcaster went on sale
2 - the 33rpm LP was released
3 - the transistor radio went on sale

This rock and roll trinity formed the foundation of popular culture which, drawing from a variety of musical styles began to bring together people of all races, religions, cultures etc. Like a Trojan horse this eventually brought down the wall.

I might not get a job as a history teacher but I'm going to enjoy writing this one!!!

Well, here's a first stab...

verse
Way back in 1948 people, there were two princes born
One forged in coal and steel, the other in the crown
Evil was riding high, dividing east from west
Perfect storm, holy trine, rock and roll did the rest

chorus
Let it roll, Leo Fender, blow down the walls
Let it roll, long play record, blow down the walls
Let it roll, transistor radio, over the wall
Come the heroes, hear the call
Trojan horse, the trinity of rock and roll

Everyone saw ‘the invincibles’, olympiads fought for gold
Ghandi fell for peace and freedom, new against the old
We swept away the poor laws, welcomed the NHS
Schools went comprehensive, we got national rail and gas

Chorus

bridge
We looked for new ideas, we saw cosmic radiation
We got self service in the shops, apartheid, Velcro,

So began the story, rock and roll trinity
Freedom for one and all, from oppression and insanity
T-Bone, Bill, Chuck, And the King; Beatles, Stones, Eric, Jimi
Lead us to the Prince of Darkness, from the rock and roll trinity

Chorus

Sounds like you've got a great concept for a song,
looking forward to it,good luck,

I instantly think of "Radio Free Europe."   No wall can keep out radio waves and so (in this case) you can isolate people from other people, but you cannot isolate thinking and thought.  With enough effort, you CAN corral cats and birds.  Corrals are small.  As they have repeatedly discovered in Australia and Africa, fences come down and break down.  Can't even fence animals effectively.

I love your concept.  Can't wait to hear how it comes out.

Thanks Tom & HTM,

I've put some early lyrics together, see above - they need work 😀  Good point re the radio waves!
I've put  a few 1948 references in there too, in line with a concept I've been working on (but keeping fairly quiet about so far).

Hi GTB,
i love a tune with the words "rock n roll" in them,
Velcro's a strong word to belt out but i think it's out of place,
i think you can do better than that.
If this is not finished then it's a great first draft,
                                                                   Tom.

You can't mention "velcro"  without including "spandex."  I think it's a law.  ;o)

Hi Tomcrocus, thanks for commenting. Yeah, it's definitely a first draft and much is likely to change. Velcro was invented in '47 so I tried to get that in but you're right it doesn't fit there. I'm working on the tune now so it will change 😃

I thought spandex wasn't until the '80s - I'm worried about where this could be heading...

Interesting thing about conceptions and reality.  Even though velcro was invented in the forties, it didn't come into widespread use (where I live anyway) until the 80s.  Which is why I associated it with spandex - which was also invented long before it came into the public consciousness.

I think the conception hurts you, and the reality doesn't save you in this case.

Super strong song concept this one.  No real issues of where this is going except maybe the final line. If rock and roll is the protagonist in this story that last line should give you the opportunity to sum up the situation by perhaps saying...

Lead us from the wall of darkness to the rock and roll trinity.

Or words to that effect. Just a thought for consideration. Very strong lyric that I am sure you will shape nicely when you put to music.

Kudos

Allan.

Thanks Allan,
That's a very good point regarding the last line, I'll give it some thought as I've been editing that part. I have trimmed the lyrics a bit, removed the word Velcro (keeping an obscure ref in its place) and got an initial recording to post this eve.
