I mentioned this is another thread but thought it was such a potentially game changing innovation I thought it deserved a separate thread...

A recent Sonar X2 update has implemented full touch screen control using the native Windows 8 suppport and some tweaks

Initially the feedback was a bit "meh - so what?" - "why would I want to reach out and touch my screen when I have a keyboard and mouse in front of me?"

However, people are now starting to realise the power of having a 2nd touchscreen monitor (or a tablet running a desktop app such as "Splashtop") mounted HORIZONTALLY - to use as a 2nd monitor AND a control surface

This does seem to be the early stages of having the touchscreen desks we see in the movies - maybe for just a few 100 quid rather than thousands!!!!

Here are some vids of the Sonar X2a developers playing with it to whet your appetite

Is this the future?

I am not ready to make the leap myself yet (more due to space!) but I am finding it hard to see the downside if they can make a robust enough monitor/desk/table

Thoughts?

Think i get it now......a touch screen version of software for making/recording music.....

I get turned off by this Steve Jobs guru, magi religious worship of technology thing that seems to be going on.....suppose they have got to sell it though ;) ;)

Not a separate touch screen version but adding a touch screen gives all of these new fearures to existing software

i dont pretend to understand this but what it looks like to me is they worked a miracle by reducing a huge recording studio desk with all the knobs & things into something anyone can use on there computer & now with this there trying to turn my little recording program back into the huge studio desk again with the all the hand operated sliders & things! ive probly got it all wrong but thats what i see

my brother told me years ago  i needed 2 monitors & i got my hubbie to connect 2 of them for me & i realy dont know how anyone can manage recording without 2 monitors ..id never have got where i am with 1 screen :)
Tell me Im wonderful & I ll be nice to you :)

WOW, thanks for the post!  Not only is this the future, its going to make control surfaces obsolete.  Not entirely obsolete, I know a couple of guys who still play albums, but they'll take a big hit in the market.

A touch screen console already exists - the raven by steven slate:

Could be come more common...as technology progresses and stuff like this becomes cheaper, perhaps that is the future of project studios.
I dont see analogue gear, old desks and tape recorders ever being totally wiped out from pro studios though..
