Hi everyone, its a real pleasure to be kicking this exciting concept off. Its a new way of performing for me, normally I am able to hide behind a multitude of tracks and can 'produce' my sound somewhat with compression, reverb eq etc.... but this time I feel very naked in front of you all.
I wondered about wether I should strip the sound track off the video and process it before recombining it and presenting here but decided against that. I wanted to maintain the intamcy of the natural performance so here are the songs.

You've set the bar very high my friend,
That was excellent, fantastic songs, I especially liked the one about the Rena. Great, confident delivery, well introduced, well played, well sung. You really are a natural. Lovely tone on that guitar as well.
Out of interest, how did you mic it up?
What a way to start our open mic night slot, I'm so pleased you went for it, it really helps to put a face, and a glimpse of your personality to your online presence. I feel like I know you better now :)

Thanks John, glad you enjoyed it. I didn't bother micing anything up. As a first run I tested out a duel miced guitar and a mic set up for me. Sure the sound was better but I felt as though there were too many things between me and the camera. Then when I listened to the sound of the camera mic by itself I thought to, hmmm that's not too shabby and ditched the first trial and started again using the simplest of setups.
My camera is a Canon 550D and the mic on it is surprisingly good. It takes HD footage which I then trimmed and rendered for you tube using Corel Video Studio.

Really enjoyed the energy of Messin' and its 44" reference and thought Rena was particularly strong, loved the finish!

I thoroughly enjoyed that. I thought it was relaxed, welcoming and very well performed. Your voice is great as is your guitar playing and it all looked effortless. I'm also worried about the mic on my camera not being up to the job. Yours sounded absolutely fine. All the songs are strong - a good mix of subjects.
Seriously tempted to wear a hat for at least one of my songs just to keep a thread going....
How the hell am I going to match that?

Confident, professional and spot on in the delivery. I'm guessing this is not the first time you've sung 'live' in front of an audience?
The Rena song was my favourite as well, love the energy you put into it. Although 'Messin With My Baby' made me chuckle a few times too :D
Would not have guessed this was the audio feed of your camera... sounds pretty good quality wise
You have indeed set the bar high for those of us to follow...
Pretty sure I cannot live up to that :-\
On a completely unrelated note, do you think you could dress up as someone else, fake a German accent and then do another one of those videos for, uhm, that someone else to post? ;D

Not at all Alan. Three very confident and entertaining performances. The first thing any entertainer has to do to get my attention is to look like they're in control and having fun. You looked like you were in your element. Good job.

Well, you say normally you get to "produce" your sound. Watching and listening to your vids shows that you probably don't have to do that much - you're as good live as you are on recordings. :)
You look totally at ease - i'd be in a blind panic.
You sound a bit like Richie Benaud when you talk.

Wow wee what a very brave thing to do, now watch your facial expressions so,etimes - you look like a gazelle being stalked by a wildebeest - but I know these things as I point my eyes up to the sky when I sing so it looks likes I am having a fit or pooping my pants :o
But what a mega confident performance and delivery - BRAVO ;D
You strum the guitar weird - but you play so well - and that's all that matters
You know the songs are very, very good - I loved the one about the farm and the ship as well - amaze balls story telling
You are an excellent songwriter and your voice tells stories - you must have been playing and writing for years and years to be this good
So so good - are you professional ?
Man I have a long , long way to go if this forums music is as good as this

great stuff! love the acoustic stripped down vibe! the blues tune messin with my baby is pretty cool and i dig the guitar on the rena went down song nice tune that one!

Hello Allan,
I've now watched all three videos and the Rena Went Down is my favourite. You may well have inspired me to have a try, but first I'd need to practice some songs. I haven't got the hang of playing and singing at the same time, so maybe something for the future.

Hi Alan...Sept.6...what a great birthday gift for me :) :) I throughly enjoyed watching you sing live and I ditto all that has already been said about your sound and songs :)...you look very comfortable in front of the camera...I always feel very awkward :-[ and don't know if I could do this, even though I do some acting on stage and some live performances...there's something about a camera :-[
I goggled the Bay of Plenty...it looks so gorgeous there...wow...lucky you :)...what a shame about the Rena oil spill :( >:(

Just watched the first vid for the first time. For just a camera mic it comes off great. Very natural and authentic. I like the minimalist setup and backdrop aswell!
