About Jan/Feb I watched a great documentary "soul ambassador" about Otis Redding and the UK tour they did back in the 60s and I loved the fact that they had such a great time over here as they didn't encounter any of the prejudice that they often encountered in their home country.

It's here on BBC iPlayer...and absolutely worth seeing

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b020tphg

So during FAWM, I thought I'd have a tilt at a Soul/Motown-type song...i've always been a big fan.

It's a convenient fantasy for some to think that the wheels suddenly fell off Uncle Sam's Multicultural Bike on Jan 20th...but this was a timely reminder to me of a country that has never even remotely had it's shit together in it's treatment of "minorities"

The Out Crowd

You want us when there's work to be done
You want us when there are songs to be sung
You want us when you get up and dance
You want us when you haven't a chance

You want us for someone to hate
You want us and you don't want to wait
You want us for someone to fear
And then you want us to disappear

I'm in with the out crowd baby
I go where the out crowd go
I'm in with the out crowd baby
And I know what the out crowd know

You want us for someone to use
Make us an offer we cannot refuse
You want us when there's something to build
You want us to kill AND be killed

I'm in with the out crowd baby
I go where the out crowd go
I'm in with the out crowd baby
And I know what the out crowd know

I'm in with the out crowd baby
I see what the out crowd see
I'm in with the out crowd baby
And I'm free when the out crowd are free

It's still a bit quiet for me lately...hope nobody minds me posting this now although I wrote it a few months back...it's just something I wanted to say.

Yo Paul.

Funky as a gibbon, this choon is. Massive groove city.

Great lyrics as ever Paul,I think people are more divided than ever these days and folk are caught between the twin evils of PC and the haters of everything which isn't them.

I've really got to watch that documentary Paul. Great sentiments in the lyrics. I was amazed during FAWM are the amount of absolute quality songs that were being produced. I think there is something that comes out of writing under pressure that gives some writers and extra edge.  This is an absolute classic Paul, great vibe. I so love the Motown stuff. Up there with the best of your stuff in my opinion  :)

Hi Paul,

love the Motown bass line, had my feet tapping. Nice contrast with the vocal which I thought was pot on given the lyrics.

Yeahhh... really love the Motown touches, especially the way the chorus leads with the snare on the downbeat backed by those tambourines - really makes it fly.  Lovely percussion throughout.  Good in-yer-face vocals too... nothing I would change here. Another great song from you with great spirit and a positive message.  Could be a ghetto anthem.
It's all too beautiful.

Yet again my prejudices about FAWM are dashed to pieces. Simple and anthemic, but also fun and unpreachy. As meaningful as the listener wants it to be.

Snare and organ really do the Motown business.

I'd probably bring the bass and organ up a bit but, whatever, it's all about the song and the vibe.

Hi

Great driving beat to this.
My missus loved the groove - her type of music.

Lyrics spot on the money.
Very nice production.

Love the drums and percussion in this one....nice intro.

Yeah love those breaks with the bongos/congas whatever they are...reminded me of something Temptations. Long been trying to muster up a song with Motown styling but haven't managed to crack it yet. This might help funnily enough more than listening to a Motown song.

Yep, those breaks and intro and outro are so nice....those musical stabs...so tell us what you've got going on here cos I can't quite catch all that's going on.

At first I was struggling with the obvious lift from the In crowd though melodically it's quite different but I soon got over it and just enjoyed your version!

I've got a ton....well maybe a few grammes...of Soul stuff going on chez Cramer over the past year or so but haven't been able to knock any of it into shape yet. Thanks for getting that back into my head!
Take it easy.

No nits from me! This is great and very relevant. I really noticed the percussion from the beginning. I like it a lot and wondered if I will ever be able to figure out how to do stuff like that....

Loved the lyric as it read.  Then I loved it as it was sung.  Loved the vibe and the entirety of the instrumental.  In short, I loved the song as a whole.

One tiny suggestion.

I'm in with the out crowd baby
I go where the out crowd go goes.
I'm in with the out crowd baby
And I know what the out crowd know knows.

I think I know why you did it like that, but I think it sounds better with the "s"es.

Short and sweet but it packs a punch in terms of the message.

Nicely crafted lyrics, just the right mix of obviousness and ambiguity.

Like the driving rhythm section and that 4 to the bar snare.

Loving this one - Big fan of Ottis Redding and a big fan of Northern Soul which this one leans quite heavily on - (Dobie Grey?).

Not overly keen on 'in your face' political message songs but these lyrics do not get in the way of a decent retro dance tune. :D
