Title: FAWM Songs 2017.. Post them here
Post by: tina m on February 01, 2017, 02:25:17 PM
heres a thread where everyone doing FAWM can post a link to each song they manage
so anyone who wants to check our progress can see :)

(we have to write & record 14 in the month of February to complete the challenge)

this is going to be SO tough...i think i'll just have to bang anything out and hope not to embarrass myself  too much :P

i've got some of a song written today...Just added the lyrics and hope to get a rough vocal recorded tonight...if i can get half a dozen song fragments together in the month, i'll be over the moon

It's February Album Writing Month

You try to write 14 songs in 28 days...and then they drag you off to the local secure unit with your shirt on back to front...

Oh no, I've got too much on my plate with having to dealing with the fashion police

My initial impression was posted yesterday  in a different thread:

akin to a county kid going to the big city for the first time.
You don't know your way around and everyone appears to be very busy and rushing around.
It's a little bit scary at first. Then you panic and think perhaps I should turn around a go home.
But people seem very enthusiastic so I waded in said hi to Tina, Paul and Igg, commented on a couple of lyrics and started to get the lay of the land.
Posted a 'lyrics wanted thread' coz that's my plan to co-write, got some responses and off and running.
:-)

Paul & Neils collab posted above this is fantastic & realy demands a listen!

BIG respect guys, and good luck ;D ;D

I've listened to all your songs so far, and
think what you're attempting is amazing.

I'm especially impressed with Pauls lyrics.
Are they all 'off the cuff' ?  Even more
impressive ;D and Tina your vocals
 are sounding sexy ;D  ;D

Title: Re: FAWM Songs 2017.. Post them here
Post by: PaulAds on February 05, 2017, 09:57:48 AM
Thanks...Broadmoor was 80% written off the cuff...I had a handful of lines written, but no format to them.

I wrote all of "requiem for the suicided" last week from scratch.

I did "we are legion" on Saturday based around an "anonymous" group mission statement I saw on the internet...thought it was an interesting and terse sort of threat that worked quite well...so I used and expanded on that in about an hour. Recording the whole thing took about three hours. It's very short and repetitive though.

I'm hoping to do one today "the Last Waltz" which is three verses I posted here in Dec 2015...I wrote another five verses and a chorus yesterday too.

FAWM is proving great for concentrating my thoughts and writing stuff i might normally keep to myself.

I've always been drawn towards grim, heavy duty stuff.

And I've always been a bit angry  :D

That reminds me of Churchills comment "Mr Attlee is a very modest man...indeed he has a lot to be modest about"

Love your vocal on this, Tina. You're playing is always great...but this adds an extra dimension to your inspired and charming material, I reckon  :)

Post by: PaulAds on February 05, 2017, 04:40:55 PM
This is number 4.

I added a lot to this...although i preferred it as it was...it was initially called "the last waltz" and i changed it around a bit...and called it this instead

https://soundcloud.com/thefuneralcrasher/labelled-with-loathe

i love squeeze  :)

i wrecked my voice at last nights gig...so really struggled to do the vocal.

I'll be away from my guitars and stuff for a few days...so i wanted to get something else down first.

8 days in, understand enough
how it works. I decided only way to make this work for me was to collab with lyricists.  It's a bit manic, very enthusiastic, the key if you want to collaborate is to sort the wheat from the chaff. The experiences and lessons learnt from this forum are a great foundation. As ever well written lyrics make songwriting a joy. So nowrelaxing and not letting the time pressure get to me, focusssing on quality!

4 songs written and demos recorded so far, including co-write a with PaulAds and one with Igg. Thanks guys.
2 more co-writes under development with Paul
1 corker of a song with Igg, just wrote tune in my head and recoded on my iPhone on train to London!
3 more collabs with lyrics agree music to be developed.
Just about balancing work/life/music balance.
 :)

Bin thanks so much for listening to my songs  :-*...i dont expect you to!
im just posting them here so people interested can see my progress ...youll hear them later in the year anyway as i glam them up & post them in the finished songs section ;D
yes you only get 2 days per song if you want to do the 14 ...but i go armed with loads of ideas & use FAWM to get psyched up enough to make songs from all the bits i have collected but its still a marathon effort to do it well
anyway I finished no.4 tonight & hope to post a quick instrumental tomorrow to get 5 done ...i need to reach 7 by the 14th  ::)  im spending too much time on each song at the mo

i did a instrumenta
http://fawm.org/songs/69515/

So here's a confession, I'm truly not comfortable with instrumentals, that and also weird and wacko stuff. I tend to avoid listening and commenting on those because it's too far away from where I myself hang out, just not my turf. It's like being asked for directions in unfamiliar territory. I feel out of place and like I've got nothing valuable to offer.

With that said though, I did listen to it and...

DAMN!!!  ;D ;D ;D

That second guitar part, right after the long snare fill, that I could listen to all day!!!
I've already listen to the song 4 times and unexpectedly, I do not plan to stop either?!?! It's just great to be blown away and totally surprised by a song like this. And my narrow minded skull desperately needs it so thanks for that.  ;)

What can I say other than I loved it Tina! Keep it up and don't loose hope, March is just 'round the corner.

Cheers,

Peter

Tina, just wondered how much time are you spending on FAwM?
Paul?!
I'm collab with lyricists so that cuts down the work. I'm probably online 30mins a day and have about 3 x 2 hours sessions in my studio a week. Just about still on speaking terms with the good Mrs C :-)

oh my goodness i probably spend about 2-3 hours most  nights Neil...i never go to bed before 1pm
ive done FAWM & 50/90 for 7 years now so i can write a song quick & record quick & develop it...mixing it takes the most time as im not great at that ...reviewing other peoples songs is the biggest drain on my time tho !..

its not that i dont want to listen to other peoples songs ,but when you want to concentrate on doing your own stuff its frustrating & of course the more people like what you do ,the more comments you get ,the more reviews you have to do!
my family are used to 'mums mad february' & are very good about it :)

i finished another one today & should have another done by tomorrow

I'm mostly staying away from this thread because it would totally suck up all my time! However, I couldn't resist taking a peek today and...I listened to "Highly Irregular". So perfect! So many of the syllables are so at odds with the strong and weak beats of the song...perfectly illustrating the theme of "highly irregular"! So, of course, I couldn't resist listening to a couple more. But now I have to rest. All that action wore me out, and I've been ill, you know. <<sigh>> Pooooor meeee....

Anyway, TinaM, I think I could listen to your stuff all day. Maybe if I listen enough, I'll become inspired and be able to write something quirky, meaningful, catchy, and memorable, too.

Brilliant, brilliant and brilliant. Where on earth would you hear such innovative and creative new music ? Anagrams of mass destruction has to be my favorite. When I have to listen to people at work discussing their musical tastes it makes me want to cry. But then I have to remember that you guys are knocking out top quality original and innovative music all the time

Oooh thank you John!  :)

i made the big mistake of tagging some of my last few as 'funny protest songs' to lighten the mood at FAWM...so many people have  been writing depressing political protest songs there..
but as usual whenever you mention humour people treat them like novelty songs
when they were meant as serious songs but using a more light hearted way of getting a message across
oh well if people want to be miserable!
anyway ive done my 14th tonight!!
id realy had enough of FAWM & am so glad to finish :)

this was the 8th time ive done FAWM so i am experienced at it ...but i am so impressed how Neil & Paul took to it & finished the challenge! (Pauls got one more too do & im sure he will finish)
ive always felt like no one here ever believed me or thought I was crazy when ive gone on about FAWM ...so i feel sort of vindicated now Neil & Paul have shown it realy is possible!

Anyway I am having rest now because I havent just written & recorded a  14 track album I have also listened & reviewed 140 songs written in February by other FAWMers at the same time..I will come back here gradually I think! :)

I am truly impressed with anyone who completed FAWM! I've only tried it once (not this year), and maybe I'll try it again. Some day when I know I'll have absolutely nothing else to do during February. Like Boydie, I couldn't keep up just listening. In fact, I only managed to hear a couple--maybe three or four.

ive always felt like no one here ever believed me or thought I was crazy when ive gone on about FAWM
not me, I always knew you were crazy, and it is crazy. Like going to NYC I imagine if you lived I the countryside. Enjoy you're lie down, some sleeps and normality...

Congratulations to Tina, Neil and Paul, 2017 FAWMers! I imagine you will all now sleep throughout the entire month of March.  ;D

Tina, sleep and withdrawal apart does anything happen beyond Feb, does all or part of the web site shut down?
My plan is to record the 8 or so songs that I've done live take videos properly in my home studio.
The problem I have is organisational avoid confusing the right song to lyricist, and not mixing  middled eights up and working out proper endings etc.
When you create so many songs in a short space of time they can merge, and you don't spend as much time fettling and learning them.

Neil i always get depressed after FAWM becos it is so intense & i get so high on it & the world seems totally dull & empty afterwards when i go back to a normal  life
anyway the site stays open all year till they wipe evrything off in Jan next year ready for FAWM 2018...
so if youve already posted a placeholder for any songs you havent finished (basically a title thats locked) then you can add the completed song after feb..or you can modify a song youve posted (but you cant post any new songs)...the only thing is probably no one will get to hear them bcos no one will know they are there
obviously you can tell your collaborators they are there...but come March theres a great exodus & after March only a handful of diehards remain

well...i really enjoyed doing FAWM

it was very hard but really worthwhile and i'm really glad i went for it...i'd been pretty disillusioned with writing lately - so it was a bit of a make or break for me, really.

my voice fell apart halfway through...which knocked me out of my stride quite conclusively...but it wasn't much of a surprise...and i got it back after 5 days or so.

i think i wrote a couple of crocks and also a couple of decent tunes...with a couple of oddities that i'd probably never have done under normal circumstances...

i'm hoping to go through the songs gradually and try to knock them into better shape...there really isn't any time to work on them much beyond writing them and banging them down during the 28 days (in the wilderness)

i just got a lovely surprise when someone on FAWM (who i'm big fan of) recommended me as one of his favourite FAWMlings...that was nice...it's a lovely, positive community. i love the virtual anonymity of it too.

i'm finding it a bit of a struggle to get back into the forum...i think i enjoyed being more free to do stuff i might not have done here...perhaps i've inadvertently been letting the forum influence my writing (or indeed the lack of it)

Give it time Paul,it's probably like coming back to a quiet country life after being in the city and hoovering Columbian marching powder up yer hooter every day!  :D

I'd be intrigued to hear how you thought the forum influenced your writing,I don't get that one.

I wonder whether I was subconsciously trying not to write what I thought the people who'd be listening/reviewing my songs wouldn't want to hear...the pressure of the 14 song/28 day deadline meant I just had to write anything I could think of...which was quite liberating, I think.

There's no scientific reasoning behind my thinking that...it's just a thought.

Reminds me of things I've read about writing exercises for writers. Something about just writing whatever comes to mind, regardless of what it is. Gets the juices flowing, or whatever. I like to write like that once in awhile (like the lyric I posted earlier today). I find I can sometimes, maybe often?, go back after doing the writing, analyze it, and discover it actually means something to me, something I wasn't aware of while I was writing it.

Yeh,maybe a point to ponder,Paul. I suppose in any situation, when you really push, that's when you find out things about yourself.

Every day's a school day.  :)

I do that with lyrics,Vicki. It's funny how all those randomly jotted notions can flower into a song, when the time is right. When I have a subject,I'm on fire,I just scribble away like the mad thing I am,get it all down. Any old half imagined tripe is duly scribed. Then comes the editing process, which is much easier if you have a load of stuff, rather than staring at a blank page.
