Firstly, hats off for tackling a difficult and painful subject. I also think you took it on pretty fearlessly - which is hard.
However, you or your character are just telling us a situation in words - there's nothing there to inspire empathy ... to make us feel the pain.
Rather than try to explain that - look how Morrissey takes on the same thing and how he shows the pain:
