On the call last night we briefly discussed having some kind of songwriting challenge. How about this one for keeping us occupied ?
Once we have some willing participants, each entrant would be matched with a random (computer generated or probably more likely scrap of paper) musical genre and then has to write a song in that style.
Anyway, I'm totally open to how this might work but just wanted to canvas some opinion
Cheers
John

sounds interesting John :D

Why not? It should be something a bit opposite of what the participants normally do. Though of course you and CPM have done every genre out there by now!

@adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) - of course I’m game and you have a point, so I’ll pick a genre for @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) and he can pick one for me...
Would that Work?
(Holy moly, i might regret this idea)

We could pair people up and they have to pick a genre for each other maybe?
-
Nice idea @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269). I suppose that if I liked my prescribed genre then I would be happy, but if it was something I had no affinity with, maybe some of the fun would go. Mind I would still do it as a bit of an ability stretcher.
How about everyone getting two randomly prescribed genres A & B, a bit like choosing your category on a TV quiz show?
Well done for putting something forward that could turn out both challenging and fun.
But I will go with your idea if everyone is up for it as is ;)

Pity I can't really join in this as my partner would end up with my randomly generated death or thrash metal! :P
Though, seriously (and with thought to the above absurdity), if this were to work well I think each partner would have to be "thoughtful" about the genre they'd want their "partner" to adopt.

I like the idea, although, no matter what I try to do, everything I write ends up sounding pretty much folky sixties-ish. The thing is, I can't resist a songwriting challenge. I'll just have to ask someone for help....

I think I`m up for that PJ. Would be a good learning exercise. I`d have difficulties if the genres were too obscure, I`ll be a bit buggered if I get something like BlackMIDI or thrash metal cos I`ve only got an acoustic guitar & a Yamaha PSR (getting my excuses in early) ;). I like @MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274) `s idea of having randomly prescribed genres plucked out.
Also could be fun to write the lyrics about a randomly chosen subject.

Rap should be off-limits because it's pretty much shit anyway ;D

Oh @5 guys named Lars (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22535) that's a thought. If I draw anything that requires fancy stuff, electronics, or anything complicated, someone will have to help me.

So whoever gets Paulski, you now know what genre to dump on him! ;) :D :P

@Paulski (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19241) best lyricists of this century are rappers! Prove me wrong!

This sounds mental. I'm in. Who's up for some Mongolian Throat Singing?
-
Great :) Seems like there is some interest for this challenge. I'll try and come up with a plan of how it might work this week. One to discuss in the bar on Friday evening maybe?
-
How about facing your nemesis genre, @Paulski (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19241) does rap, while @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) does disco, @CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) does a full erasure MIDI pop song, @Neil C (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18856) does speedcore, @jamie why not trap/glitch
-

Speedcore is a form of hardcore that is characterized by a high tempo and aggressive themes.[1][4] The genre was created in the early to mid 1990s and the name originates from the genre hardcore as well as the high speed tempo used. This music rarely drops below 300 beats per minute (bpm). Earlier speedcore tracks often averaged at about 250 bpm,[5] which could be defined as terror(core), whereas some tracks sometimes exceed 1000 bpm where it then becomes known as extratone, the world's fastest music genre.[4]
